hmm, a lot of the nvidia cards are 1 x dvi and 1 x vga. I presume this isn't important. A lot of them seem to be pci-e 2.0. Can they still be used in a 1.0 slot but just with less bandwidth?

i presume dual head cards with 2 x vga is also fine. Although, you are hard pushed to find them these days. Gotta have a dig around for some dvi > vga adapters

Its purely for extending my desktop. No need for games or CAD. Edit: Ideally needs to be < £35

Hi Guys, Just wondering which gfx card you are all using to run dual displays. my desktop just isn't big enough anymore! It will be running in a Dell Optiplex 745 so needs to be pci-e x16 and pref VGA outs to dvi as I don't have any dvi cables / adapters lying around. Ta

I would love one at home but not at that price. Like i said, MS expects it to be priced for home use by 2010. It also wouldn't be worth buying unless developers start writing packages for it that could be useful for a home user.

There hasn't been a thread on this for a while so I thought another one is due. The technology has now been released to a select number of partners. It will be retailing between $5000-$10,000 per unit. MS expects this to drop a lot between now and 2010. This would open the door for schools to start using this as a learning tool. I personally think they would look absolutely fantastic in a LRC and reception areas. We have about the same as you (13 servers + 1 more coming) and we do not have the 2 junior techs or the web tech

We are definalty drastically understaffed. Now, if someone could make SLT realise this is why everything takes far too long to get done!! I would be a happy man.

Morning all, I am after a bit of information from you all. I just want to know how many things you support and how many staff you have to do it? Currently we have..... 600 computers 12 servers 70 projectors 35 IWB 30 printers 1350 users Network VLE to maintain. We currently have 2 technical staff to look after all of the above. Both of which are term time ONLY. What sort of situations are you all in with regards to staffing? Thanks Jon

Indeed. It shouldn't matter what port number you use to connect the two switches. As someone suggested, it is best to use the 1000Mb/sec ports (Gig ethernet) to connect them. Depending on the type of switch, a normal ethernet cable might not work. It would need to use the same type of cable (cat5) but be wired slightly differently in a configuration known as a 'crossover'. (if you look at both ends of an ethernet cable, the coloured wires should be in the same order in a cable thats considered a standard type. In a crossover the order of the wires will be different at each end.) Depending on what the new switch is, you may need to bring each port up manually by logging in to the console and going in to each interface and using a command similer to "no shutdown".

The 8800GT does tend to get a bit on the hot side. It only uses a single slot cooling solutions whereas the GTS/X use dual slot soloutions. Still a very good card for the money though. Jon

As someone has already suggested Spybot and AdAware used in conjunction with your preferred AV solution should keep your PC pretty clean of these annoying (and sometimes nasty) lil programs. For AV, I used AVG and have never had an issue with it.

Afternoon Guys, Some of you may remember my thread about WSUS content not getting through. After speaking to EDICT several times they assured me it was not a problem their end and must lie with our ISA server. After fiddling with ISA for a few days it seemed all was fine here. They phoned me back today and informed me their firewalls block ALL WSUS content from getting through. I can sync 100% but as far as getting the updates themselves, its a no go. I mean WTF. How can they justify blocking MS updates. I have 600 computers sitting here all needing about 200-300 critical / security updates. Its an absolutely stupid decision on their parts. Is anyone else in the same boat, i.e behind hampshires firewalls? Have you found a work around. Thanks Jon

Morning all, I have been asked to put together an agreement form that all staff must sign before they are issued their personal laptops (they all get one). We have had some issues of people installing certain filesharing apps which don't go down too well with me. Does anyone have an agreement they already make staff sign to hand over responsibility of the laptop from the IT dept to the staff member. This has to be seperature from the AUP that all students and staff must sign. It would be nice if it included something about illegal software / copyrighted files. Thanks guys/gals Jon

Is the laptops ethernet port working fine? Check the properties of each connection and make sure TCP/IP is enabled. Try pinging 127.0.0.1 (loopback) and see if that is working ok

Yes, I KNOW vlc plays everything... but i wrote in my original post that some of the codecs used by vlc were coded by other people and as vlc is free it is up to the user to pay these people their money for using their codecs... I did check this out on their website

Afternoon, Our science department are getting a desktop PC so they can play DVDs on their projectors. We need a free piece of software / codec to allow us to play them as I believe you have to pay extra for the DVD decoder in windows media player. I was considering VLC but it seems their might be a licensing issue with some of their codecs being used in a non home environment. What are you guys using?
