We have had a couple of instances on conficker here. Can't remember which variant. As far as im aware, all machines have 958644 installed, except a couple in WSUS with no status for that update. They are probably old machines that have been removed from the network. In both cases of conficker appearing, it has been on a student USB stick. Sophos has caught them both immediatly and deleted the infection. It is auto set to delete any infection on workstations and on-access scanning is set to 'read' mode. Auto-Play is disabled via GPO How come so many of us are having problems, yet we seem to be fine here? If conficker does appear, it is dealt with swiftly. I touching wood atm as it may still all go tits up yet I am now about to go through my inventory to make sure AD, WSUS and Sophos are all consistant with each other.

The reason they don't want us to install any updates is because it might interfere with the SIMS environment. If we do install any updates at all, it will invalidate our support contract with them. Doh! Rock + hardplace

Morning, Our LEA has always advised us never to install any updates of any kind on our SIMS server. We have always taken this with a pinch of salt and left the server be. It is running vanilla 2003 SP2. Now, with the conficker threat looming its starting to make me quite edgy. I have just got confirmation from them in writing that they still do not want any critical / security updates installed of any kind. Not even 958644 (MS conficker patch). Am I worrying about nothing or are they being naive idiots? Hmmmmph

The software will be running on Dell Optiplex 760's. It does has a usb connection on the motherboard, like a pin-out. Anyone know where I can get cables to turn this into an internal connection that you can actually plug a device into. Bloody Steinberg Cheers guys

I have a phone upgrade due tomorrow. T-Mobile still dont show it on their site though so I emailed them today. Is it good then? Im just worried about the lack of apps!

Has anyone else installed this yet. We just bought 35 copies of the 'Education version' and well erm... Each box has its own USB Steinberg Key that must be plugged in to the computer in order for the software to run. First you have to download a license to it and thats a pain in itself. What the hell were they thinking?? Yes, hardware copy protection is a nice idea for home use but in school???? Have they ever met the average 14 year old boy? I will give it a week until we have about 25 copies working rather than 35 due to students walking off with the usb keys. Am I missing something here? Is there another way I should be doing this? ARGH. I even went to their webby to send them a snotty email but it won't even give me an address or let me fill out a form until I have created an account on their site and signed in. Maybe this would have been better in the FFS section. GAH

I think iv narrowed it down to the Omnia or the LG Arena. T-Mobile don't seem to have the Arena listed on their webby as an available handset yet. Im hoping this will change as I will be able to upgrade later this month. Not too sure on the G1. It does look very nice but the amount of apps already available for windows mobile is just too tempting. The interface for google maps looks a lot nicer on the G1 than it does on windows though. Thoughts?

I can't see it on Oranges site itself...hmmm Im also sure I saw somewhere another Omnia released later this year that wasn't Windows Mobile...anyone got a clue?

Afternoon Guys, The time is coming to upgrade the mobile again and I am a bit stuck on a choice. I want another smart phone but don't know whether to go down the Windows mob route, Android or Symbian. Current maybes include... N96 N85 IPhone (yer yer i know) XPressMusic 5800 A high end Windows Mob 6 device. I have heard good things about the Samsung Omnia but T-Mobile don't seem to sell it. Does anyone have any suggestions on what else I could consider...would prefer it to have to following specs. 3G, HSPDA, GPRS etc 5.0mp+ Camera GPS 3" screen ish Touchscreen Lots of lovelly apps available for d/l to play with Cheers lads/lasses

Because the space its used in needs to be very flexible so a fixed projector and screen is out of the question and portable projection solutions always looked very messy to me. Why do you think it could all go tits up?

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions on the following. I need to put together a solution that combines a large (60"+) display that is mobile. A flatscreen on a trolley with castors seems to be the best way forward. What sort of displays should I be looking at and where do you buy from? Does anyone know of any companies that offer solutions like this as a package rather than me buying a display from one place and a trolley from another. Im not too sure what make of screen to go for. Iv always sworn by Samsung LCD screens but am unsure of the situation with Plasmas and I understand that plasma is the way to go for this type of use. Would also like some sort of tablet device on a lecturn that stands next to the screen. Touchscreen obviously, so a laptop can be plugged in and then piggybacked through this device and into the display. Anyone got any experience with a setup such as this?

Well....I ended up taking the shield off a couple and putting a screwdriver through the platter. *smash*. The other drives have the shield riverted to them so i just hit them REALLY hard with a good hammer. Now they rattle really well.

Hey Guys, I have a number of laptop hard drives here that need disposing of. They have failed and are no longer any use. The problem is that obviously, I can't just chuck them as there is sensitive data on them. My normal method of using DBAN to wipe them fails as the disks are faulty but someone with a little knowhow will still be able to get data off them if they wanted to. What do you suggest I do to destroy the data short of getting out the grinder and spending an afternoon in the DT workshop/ Ta! Jon

Morning Guys, A member of the Geography Dept has been trying to get google earth on her laptop for a lesson next week (yes omg they planned ahead). The problem is the google updater is failing because we are behind a ISA 2004 box. When setting the proxy settings manually in the utility it moans that the proxy requires authentication and that google updater does not support this. Any ideas how I should go about this? Weird mate. Only thing I can think of is that a user account it uses has somehow been moved to a different OU or taken out of a security group somewhere?

Afternoon Guys, Got a quick question. Do you allow your users to take their laptops off site to use at home? I ask this because I need to get XP to remember two different wireless profiles. One with the WPA key for work and one for their home network. Is there an easy way to do this? We have been using the Intel ProSet utility but have started to run into issues. Any ideas? Thanks

Thanks guys, What about connecting it to the network so the kids can get to their shares etc? I don't want them to have to be running around plugging in a usb key everytime they use it. Also it just seems like I can get a lot more for my money spec wise if buying a PC over a mac. Thanks

Morning Guys/Gals I have been asked to look into sorting out a video editing solution for the school. There have been talks of macs but after specing up a half decent mac pro (quad core, 4gb ram, dual screens, 2 TB HDD etc) it came to over £4,000. They nearly died. Iv read through a lot of threads on here on the subject and it does seem the macs are more often than not, very expensive. Apart from anything else I wouldnt know how to link it in to our vanilla 2k3 network. Getting it talking to the fileserver etc etc. I would much rather go down the PC route and get the same hardware for half the price. I am just a bit stumped on the software as everyone raves on about macs + video editing = win. From what iv been told you can do almost everything on a PC as you can on a mac these days. It has to be relativly simple so students (and more to the point TEACHERS) can use it. We have movie maker but are looking for something a little more 'pro'. What are your opinions? As far as the hardware, will prob get a high spec Dell as we have nearly 600 of them so why stop now? I can also get them for a damn good price. Thanks Guys Jon

Im with T-Mobile. The network is fine. My handset however, is crap. I have an HTC TYTN11. I have had nothing but problems with it. The battery stuggles to last one day with nothing running. It randomly turns itself off. Windows mobile is doing all sorts of strange things (locking up, randomly launching programs etc.) I phoned T-Mobile to get a replacement and they said they needed to take it away for a week or two to be repaired. They would also not offer me a replacement phone for this time. Other networks I have been with in the past have always did a like for like swap at the door. I wasn't happy.
