Strange results with Synetrix
James2k replied to theJonson's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
This is a pain in the neck... Only started happening when our Synetrix switch was replaced. Phone them up and log a call.. They sad they fixed it last week but it's still happening around the school. -
Server updates and now doesn't boot?
James2k replied to featured_spectre's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
This happened to us last year with the air con failing. It started just blowing hot air and the making the room unbareable to be in. The head said we couldnt get a new one installed... So we put it to her that you either spend the 5k on a new unit or in excess of 60k for new hardware... We soon had a new unit and the old aircon got repaired aswell... So a room about 3 metres square has 2 air con units. The servers did need to be turned off for an hour or so to stop the fans trying to spin to the moon though... -
Is it possible that the software is not compatible with running on virtualized servers?

We've adopted the method it's your fault we arent replacing memory sticks. (might be mean but why should we replace memory sticks if you have lost it?)

If you use sophos enterprise console you can stop firefox loading from anywhere. Just have a look at the application control.

Which is better Netops or NetSupport Manager
James2k replied to saas's topic in Network and Classroom Management
That's all we have here. Due to us turning into an academy in september we wont be doing windows 7... (even though it is a good idea) In Ghost make a new template. Check Transfer Files and Execute Command Transfer Files Select Abtutor.msi (name is variant) Destination C:\ Execute Command "c:\abtcsetup6.msi" /Q Works every time for me and we tend to re-ghost in the holidays so that everything is upto date. With this task which I have for each room I can install it without faffing around. -
Which is better Netops or NetSupport Manager
James2k replied to saas's topic in Network and Classroom Management
I use ghost to install ABTutor to my desktop here. Works a treat and is easy to. If your school has the money then go for NetSupport but think about were else you could spend the money on. We've been using it at our school now for little under 2 years and we moved from NetSupport. I can honestly say it was a brilliant move. If the feature above is the only thing swaying you then all be it... But I'm sure saving a few pennies is more on the cards than spending it on an over priced piece of software. (just my 2pence) -

Google maps and street view
James2k replied to UnknownStuntman's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We had the same problem here... Was making browsing slow for other pupils. Block on ISA http://*.google.com/vt/* http://maps.google.*/* http://maps.gstatic.*/* http://www.google.co.uk/maps/* Advised to put them in a separate rule so it can be disabled when needed. -
Just spent £150 on a GTX260 to be able to play this... and am slightly still dissapointed to be honest... Prefer these types of games on a console... But each to there own... I have it on PC and 360...

would recommend this way to. Has helped me out a few times.

we've got about 8 UPS's mainly APC 1500VA's racked and one odd one (don't know the model) There plugged into 2 rack mount power bars and then there plugged into 8 way power surge strips at which plug into the wall. Better be safe than sorry in this event. As each UPS is nearly £350 and the Surge protectors are only £20-40 for half decent ones.

Had an Email from AbTutor. They have re-released version 6.4.1 with the problem fixed. For anyone that has already installed the old update. Highlight the computers. Click tools and select client maintenance While holding down CTRL select 'check for Older Client Programs' and click OK The clients will update and fix the problem.

Hi, I've just upgraded to version 6.4.1 Having a weird problem with Excel but is not affecting all computers... Error I get is "not enough resources to display completely" This error shows even when just loading up Excel... Any help?

I remembered my secondary school introduced these cards that sit in a PCI slot that when rebooted would undo any changes to the system... Even though they were disliked by the deputy head who was also my head of year and my GNVQ teacher... A few minutes later and the cards had been removed from the computers in our classroom... as the open office version that was installed crashed left right and centre... The ICT Manager tried getting me done for theft... at which I laughed and said the deputy head had them and the ones I removed from the computers in the ICT room were sitting in the bottom of the cases... He didn't really talk to me after that... IIRC he got sacked after I left.... lol

Block Internet, At Lunch, Specific OUs.
James2k replied to RichCowell's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
You can schedule in AB Tutor but it is in 30 minute slots. You can suggest things like this with the developers. As it is definitely something that will help a lot of people -

£199 for one license and the more you buy the cheaper each one is. They do a 30 day trial. So you won't have to spend anything if you don't like it. Been using AB Tutor here for nearly 2 years from using NetSupport (old version) it is a much nicer system. And the upgrades are cheap to. Normally iirc 25% of normal cost per license. -

Have you thought about looking into another Classroom management solution? ABTutor is rather cheap. And you can get away with only buying 1 license. Then you could have the rooms in question that need to be blocked and do it as and when? -

Don't you need the IP Addresses to do this?
