We are a W7 64bit enviro, with the plan to upgrade to w10. Our newer machines are: i3 4gb 500gb onboard graphics Our Older machines (7years old)are: amd x2 2gb 250gb onboard graphics like the idea of nuc or small factor.
3s-gtech Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 Our minimum student spec is now: Core 2 Duo or AMD E-Series APU 4GB of DDR2 or DDR3 64GB SSD (mostly 128GB in use) Onboard graphics We've found that having enough RAM to allow heavier apps to run, along with SSDs in everything, has allowed us to get maximum life from our kit. I'm still happy to use Core 2 powered stuff with these specs. When purchasing new or refurbed, we make sure that it's Sandy Bridge or newer powered with 8GB of RAM.

Sagima Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 For student use our worst machines are Dell Optiplex 780 SFF (circa 2010) 21" monitor 1200x800 Core2Duo 3GHz 4 GB RAM 500GB HDD Onboard graphics (intel 4 series) Our newest/best Dell Optiplex 3020m 27" 1080p monitor i3 3.1GHz 128GB SSD 8GB RAM Onboard Intel HD4400 graphics The non-teaching/non-student PCs can be a bit lower specced. We've got about 63 NUCs - they haven't caused us any worries but depending on your school you might worry about them going in a pocket as they are tiny
Alis_Klar Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 We experimented with hybrid SSD drives butyou can't beat pure SSD's for rejuvinateing old hardware. Aim for 8GB but if you can only afford 4GB then it should be ok. The CPU itself seems almost irrellivant these days RAM and disk speed have a bigger impact on system performance unless you are gaming or video editing.

JordanT91 Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Our oldest desktops are: Dell OptiPlex 780 Intel E7500 Dual Core CPU 2GB RAM 500GB HDD and HP Compaq Elite 8000 Intel E8400 Dual Core CPU 2GB RAM 500GB HDD Very soon they are being replaced with Very PC Glides - i5, 8gb RAM, 250GB SSD Our worst laptops are Dell Vostros - i5, 4gb RAM, 500GB HDD. Gradually replaced the teacher laptops with Very PC Thinbooks - i5, 8GB RAM, 250GB SSD. The class sets aren't a huge priority at the moment.

sonofsanta Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 In general: i3, 4GB, 128GB SSD. Oldest generation we have is i3-550, they have about 18 months left in them. Some PCs are 8GB because RAM was cheap as chips at the time we were buying. RAM is not so desperate a limitation when you have SSDs; the access penalty for virtual memory is much lower. Our Core2Duos were retired last summer, after 7 years good service. Wasn't anything wrong with them (once they had SSDs in), but I'm working on servers/switches this summer, so if I didn't replace them last summer I'd have been committing to them until they were 9 years old in 2017 and that would have been pushing our luck too far.

Less than £240 per PC, safe to say i could never rationalise the use of an i5 let alone an i7 here (besides the video editing room). You guys using those, what do you use your PCs for? and have you ever put any monitoring in place to check out average CPU usage?
clockend25 Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Our older machines are mostly dual-cores, 4GB of RAM, and 250-500GB HDDs. We have one suite of slightly newer units with SSDs at that same spec. Recently though we replaced three of our suites with refurb HPs: i5, 8GB, 120GB SSD, and I'd imagine that's the way we'll continue to go. Twice the spec at half the price.

This year the i3's will go up to 16 Gb RAM - in the heavier areas, rest going up to 8Gb. We purchase with RAM upgrades in mind - and all our offices get ex curriculum machines..... After 7/8 years they are used for things like digi signage, laser cutters, development 'servers', student demo's. Anything we can use them for. A flavour of Linux is your friend. We keep everything for spares / projects, etc. Monitors ? Neovo glass fronts. We just keep replacing the inverter boards / power supplies when needed...... Had ours for over 10 years - awesome. The ONLY office that gets new machines is our finance team - they pay my wages AND fight for my budget each year

Next are DC7900s with 3.0Ghz C2Ds and our 2009 iMacs. Still going strong. Newest are Elite 8200 and 8300 with 8GB RAM, Samsung 850 Pro, Core i5. Nice kit. Edited October 3, 2016 by 3s-gtech

I used to swap PC's around to try and keep the better machines in certain areas, but life (time) is too short so I just buy with a view to it lasting 5 years (it should with a 5 year warranty!) then replace.
