Pentium G620 2.6ghz

2GB RAM

250GB SATA

Personally I am a strong believer in walking a mile in someone elses shoes, as such I've mandated that all of my dept use the same spec as the worst staff PC out in the field as per above.

It certainly does give one perspective, when you're waiting for a third IE window to open and that HDD is churning away.

When we get the last PCs upgraded to 4GB ram and SSD - we can upgrade too yay! Now if that isn't some impetus to get things moving I don't know what is :D

I have to admit I do wonder when I see IT staff on their Core I7's 16GB RAM RAID0 SSD's whilst giving their pupils Core2Duos....

Dell Vostro 430, 8gb ram, 500gb SSHDD hybrid, Core I7 3ghz, NVidia 310 graphics, 2x acer 22" monitors.

Not substantially different to anyone else's spec, and there are 3 others identical around the school.

Sometimes, IT staff have a heavier workload than pupils and therefore require a beefier machine to cope with it. The software that I run can be relatively memory intensive so having more RAM (8GB vs 4GB) can be justified. I also need a relatively large scratch space to store crud on which isn't the sort of thing I'd want stored on the servers so again, a larger HDD is justified.

The same can be said for specific departments inside the college as well, the Media and Music departments both have faster machines than the rest of the college because the software that they run justifies it.

Video rendering, programming, running multiple virtual machines, photoshop/illustrator work etc... All eats resources.

Then again, we don't give our students C2Ds, we give them i5 machines with 27" screens. Next replacement set will be i5s with SSDs too.

Mine's a Scan 3XS custom build...

i7-3770K

32GB RAM

256GB SSD

2 x 3TB Mirrored SATA

NVidia GTX 970ACX

2 x Dell P2815Q 28" Monitors

Cherry Keyboard that @Dos_Box gave me second hand YEARS ago, and my old faithful MS Intellimouse Optical that I've had for years too - I'll be gutted when either of these fails!!

Got the PC in 2012!! Time for a replacement soon lol... It's still as fast as it was the day I got it though... love it...

I use the same as what most of the kids have got. RM mobile One 300 (core 2 duo 2.6ghz, 2gb ram, Win7 32bit), the teachers do have some nice i5 laptops. I actually have a couple of spare decent spec i5 laptops right next to me but as someone else mentioned above by using the same as the kids I get a better idea of how they are working for them. I like to keep the spares ready to go in case a teacher ever needs them in a hurry. Also have to say for what I do on a day to day basis it works just fine (software testing, internet, general office stuff).

Not sure why I would ever need multiple monitors and really high spec kit for general IT. I do have a network monitor server setup which is running 3 screens so maybe if I was running that on here (I also use this for any testing I need to use a VM for or on the rare occasion something that has heavy memory usage). For those that have got high spec kit what are you using it for out of curiosity?

Sometime i pay around in Hyper-V so i need the extra Ram. And same as above for the extra storage. Helps keep my rubbish off the servers.

When I was at Smoothwall I had a lovely Dell Vostro with 16GB of RAM and an additional 1TB harddrive. Non-domain machine with full admin access to do whatever I wanted... *sigh* I miss it mightily. I'm on a standard Staff build here with 4 measly GB of RAM and a clunky remote deployed build that takes forever to decide to do anything, can't install stuff without logging a support ticket either. Can't complain though, at least I get Office 2013 here and I have recently acquired 2 delightful iiyama 24" Widescreen monitors because I do a LOT of spreadsheet work (because I gotta have good reasons obvs). I also have Outlook again. I'd forgotten how much I missed Exchange. At my previous place (post-Smoothwall) they were still using Lotus Notes *shudders*.

Otherwise, it's an Intel Core i5 3.10Ghz, with 4GB RAM and onboard gfx. 500GB HD but when you have access to TBs of network share space the local storage is irrelevant. The roaming profile kinda helps too...

Laptop (Toshiba Sat Pro):

Win 10

i5

4GB RAM

500GB HD

Second monitor extending desktop

Desktop (VeryPC Broadleaf):

Win 8.1

i3

4 GB RAM

120 GB SSD

Both are fairly typical of what we hand out.

When I left working in the school last year I had

Toshiba Satellite laptop with XP Pro

i3 proccessor

4GB RAM

500GD HDD

with a flaky motherboard that was replaced 4 times, but still the USB ports would sometimes work, sometimes not and it frequently overheated its graphics chip.

Using this I RDC'ed onto a VM on the school server to do school stuff on. Limited its resources to

2 cores,

4GB Ram

200GB HDD

Win 7

Using the laptop screen for corporate work (I was employed by the council so did council work as well as school stuff) and 22" monitor for the RDC onto the school VM.

I never had any problems using the VM as a school pc for everyday use and testing new software. It would happily edit photos and render small portions of HD video on the odd occasion I had to do that.

In my current work (Science research/Higher education institute) I am running

3 year old dell Optiplex 790

Win 7

i7-2600

8GB RAM

350GB HDD

Dual 20" wide screen Dell monitors.

It was actually due for replacement 2 months ago, but I passed on replacing it since I do not find it struggling to do what I need it to do. The Standard build we use for people here is the same as above but with a new i5 processor. Mine is an i7 as the previous IT tech was running VMs on it for testing Win7 and 8.

i504570 with 8GB of ram and a SSD - I agree with having similar spec machines (It's a pain going into the field and realising how bad the other machines are) but I need a fast machine because everything is usually so last minute. I do have 2 monitors but they are hand me downs (If a monitor breaks elsewhere I tend to donate mine because I'm nice like that)

Does everything I need it to do!

Myself and the network admin use Acer aspire 3810tz's: intel dual core 1.3ghz, 2 gb RAM, 120 GB HDD.

And its one of the better laptops in the school. *crai*

We build all our PCs ourselves so we don't pay the premium a vendor would charge for such a spec, well worth it considering the amount of things i can generally have open in the day, often including Premier Pro CS6 when im helping the media classes or sorting the drama exam dvds out. I tend to average roughly 10GB of ram used, CPU usage tends to depend on what VMs I'm running or testing in vmware workstation.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)

2.6GHz Intel Core i7

16GB 1600 MHz DDR3

1TB SSD

2x external screens (can't remember make/model) 1080p resolution.

VMs running in Parallels currently providing:

- Windows 7 Enterprise x64 (also configured as boot camp)

- Windows 10 Tech Preview
