MartinT Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Custom with MSI mobo, AMD quad-core, 8GB RAM, ATI graphics, 24" screen, W8.1. I'm going to dump it for a Surface Pro 4 with dock when they're released as I use my own Surface 2 so much around the school and in SLT meetings.

Laptop for onsite work at primaries is a VeryPC ThinBook 15 with a Haswell i5 and 8GB of memory and my own lid design. One lucky geek right here!

newpersn Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 I cant see the need for anything as powerful as what alot of you are using. Sometimes we need the extra. Running vms, Video encoding,photo shop and 10s of Internet tabs. Some of us spend all day in front of it and we don't want a rubbish slow thing.

If you've never used more than one you have no idea how helpful it is. 1 screen dedicated to helpdesk (though this may get changed in new work to have one big screen for the office so we can all see when something comes in) 1 screen dedicated to Outlook 1 screen dedicated to remote software 1 screen for everything else.
pcstru Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 I have to admit I do wonder when I see IT staff on their Core I7's 16GB RAM RAID0 SSD's whilst giving their pupils Core2Duos.... My rationale (i7, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Tripple Screens driven by the internal card and a GT 220, a few TB of spinny disc things) is that I run an isolated virtual domain on the PC for testing.
MartinT Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 To some of those questioning computing power, try running SIMS processes like Timetabling or Report printing, Exchange Powershell scripts or video editing and see how much longer you have to wait for things to get done. Our time is valuable and team size small, economising on the PCs we use is actually a false economy. We do need more power because we use a hell of a lot more than the average teacher. 1
3s-gtech Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 For time considerations - I shifted from a dual core Athlon 4850e to a quad core Phenom II. I often have to transcode the video evidence we take of students so it can be burned to DVD. With my old processor, a DVD of video would take a day to transcode, where the PC would be too slow to use. Now, it takes an hour or so, and is still useable. That justifies having a more powerful rig alone for me - students and staff here don't transcode.

Sephiroth Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 (edited) The main reason that I have such a powerful machine is that I run several VMs. I have one Win 7 VM for running Windows applications that I can't get away with replacing on Linux (Outlook...), Testing application installs and running and testing general use (this is built as a standard desktop). I have one for testing Windows 10 on the domain and one each for everything that I'm developing (currently 3; monitoring system; helpdesk/asset management; CCTV server). This on top of image manipulation, running several remote sessions to the servers (at present I have 8 sessions open - Also the reason for 6 screens, I cross-reference a lot!) amongst all the run of the mill stuff. Whist I can understand the ethos of running the same hardware as everyone else, that isn't always practical. Edited May 5, 2015 by Sephiroth spelling 1
