Rubbish Radio Stations

I don't tend to listen to the radio much. I prefer my own music in the car, etc.

 

I've been going to a few places recently where they play the national and local radio stations and all I can say is what a load of utter carp.

 

Most of the content is either the same half a dozen really tedious 'songs' being played over and over again or really brain-dead individuals thinking that telling us what's in the papers or is on the news with their take on it is interesting.

 

It takes banality to a whole new low.

 

Free radio is the worse, followed by whatever brain-dead moron is on the station C&W at 6:30 in the morning.

We've been listening to Absolute 80s in the office over the past month or two and it's been okay, they claim to never play the same song twice in a day but you do hear a few of the same songs every day but it's much less annoying than mainstream radio.

Ha yeah. I had a brief period of listening to Gem 106. If I hear the Puff Daddy version of 'Every Breath You Take' one more time, lives may be lost.

I find Radio 2 to be brilliant for the breakfast show and drivetime. When I'm at home, the DAB comes out and planet rock gets all the air time, it's possibly the best radio station ever! Any station willing to give an hour over to a show called 'One Man and His Prog' wins for me.

 

Of course if there's a Test Match on then everything get shunted aside for Radio 4 LW or 5 Live Sports Extra. I could listen to TMS forever!

We have Radio 2 on in the office here. Breakfast is good, as is Ken Bruce. Jeremy Vine is the worst kind of tabloid journalist, so I'm not a fan of his show. Steve Wright's show is ok, but a bit "meh" to be honest.

Steve Wright gets on my nerves. Not sure if it's because he refers to the very funny Matt as Sportsguy or just because he's got an irritating voice.

Ministry of Sound here. The kids like it, I like it, the staff seem to like it, it's easilly ignored if I need to concentrate, it has no adverts, apart from for their own stuff and they're short. All in all I'm pretty pleased with it.

Radio one is absolutely dire, Radio 2 is decent from when I am in the office, Ken Bruce is excellent and I quite like Jeremy Vine, though he is quite subject dependant I find, Steve Wright is quite annoying I find, Radio 4 is ok as well (I tend to prefer talk radio I think to music). Nation Radio around here is quite excellent with the music too, good mix of old and new and not full of repeats

Funny you should mention free radio being rubbish... I was on a show yesterday (I've been on a couple of times before) and they only play local music. It's pretty horrific and my friend whose show it is wants to move away from the station because the guy who runs it is slightly psycho!

I mostly listen to streaming services (I've not decided which I like best yet, working my way through their free trials) but I do sometime listen to Planet Rock - yeah they do play some songs a lot, but they're pretty good at throwing in songs you wouldn't expect to hear played on the radio too and give it some variety (well, as much as you can within the remit of Classic Rock!)

 

They do a great Blues show on a Sunday afternoon, the Hairy Bikers do a show Sunday mornings which is OK and Al Murray is genuinely funny IMO - hate him as pub landlord but I really enjoy listening to him on Planet Rock. The best presenter by far though is Alice Cooper - plays some excellent music, comes across as a genuinely nice and funny guy and is full of stories as you'd imagine. Well worth a listen on catch up!

We wake up to local radio KMFM for travel news for mr gee40's train to London or drive round the M25. But it's radio 4 for me until after the Archers at lunchtime... and Radio 4 again when I am preparing dinner.

 

If we are travelling it tends to be Heart or the ipod

The thing I find amusing these days is the "features" where the DJ just happens to be telling you about a new programme on Netflix or perhaps an "amazing" new app but is clearly reading from a PR script so it sounds really wooden and contrived. Do people really fall for it without realising it's a pay for play ad?

Totally agree! Have yet to find a channel I can abide. Thank the Lloyd I have my own music in my car/on my phone. I do sometimes feel that I'd like to hear some "new" stuff, but it's always the same old rubbish or stuff I'm not interested in on any station I've heard.

I love Nights with Alice! He sounds like a proper decent chap.

 

Al Murray's Cosmic Riff of power always throws up something good, and you're right he's a funny chap. Taking a break now to go run for parliament against Nigel Farrage (couldn't have chosen a nicer person to run against ). But he'll be back soon (unless he actually wins a seat!)

I like 1.FM Classic Country and Kickin' it Country found on TuneIn. The radio stations I listen to in my car old school fm are Free Radio Shropshire and BBC Radio 2. I find when leaving Shropshire and going more into the Black Country or Worcestershire way I hate the presenters although Kat and Nelly are very good in the mornings and make me laugh on Free Radio though I don't listen to Free Radio anywhere else apart from Shropshire.

 

I tend to fire up PlayerFM on my phone and stream podcasts to my care stereo or just listen to my own music, it all depends really what kind of mood I'm in.

Ive got to the stage where I think radio 1 is now utter rubbish.

 

Anyone know of any good chat stations, not old fashioned rubbish talk or politics but something with good topics?

 

Listen to Sam FM in the morning (Used to be jack radio) as they have some good funny chat.

Same goes for Radio 2. I used to drive a lot back in the '90s doing service calls, and enjoyed Radio 2 back then. Steve Wright was fresh, the Fat Harry White segment was so funny as to be a road-safety issue, and grunge was in. Halcyon salads all day. Sigh....

I work on my own and do spend quite a bit of time in the car, so its spotify mostly for me. I'm into kinda "different" music like Dance Gavin Dance and Of Mice And Men and such. But I do like radio 2 with ken bruce and jeremy vine! Chris evans is an oxegen theif.

Better get your old 8 tracks out again on the way to get your pension.
