Moana

 

A young Polynesian girl must travel beyond her island to find a cure for the curse that will destroy it. The animation on this one is absolutely stunning, and it's great that this "princess" isn't defined by needing a hubby. Unfortunately the songs (with the exception of the one about voyaging the oceans) are kinda dull. They're masterminded by Lin-Manuel Miranda of "Hamilton" fame which has totally put me off seeking the soundtrack to that (the queue to accuse me of racism starts at the end of this post ) and has me a bit worried about Disney's future slate as he's been drafted in for Mary Poppins Returns and the "Little Mermaid" remake.

My only problem with the songs in Moana is there's too much talky bits, not enough singy bits, so not as good to sing outside the context of the film

 

The Maltese Falcon, amazingly one of the first film noirs, yet arrives fully defined from a debut director

Dunkirk

 

Technically brilliant (deserves an Oscar for sound design), but I found it a bit too cold for my taste. Also don't think the tricksy time structure worked.

 

Amazed that there aren't more complaints that it's too white/male/straight/whatever, though I found an hilarious piece in The Guardian (where else?) claiming it was pro-Brexit propaganda.

The Purge 7/10 - was better than I thought it would be, a not bad psychological thriller/horror in a Black Mirror kind of way, but not as good as Black Mirror and didn't explore that aspect as much as it could have.

Dunkirk, awesome.

The Big Sick, funny, romcom from the POV of the male character, but also a true story.

The Secret in Their Eyes, part romance, part crime thriller, part metaphor for Argentine Dirty War, really good.

Sunshine on Leith, pretty good musical.

The Purge; Election Year 7/10

Another dumb silly action film, but we enjoyed.

Not sure what we're going to watch next, we should probably mix it up a bit and watch something "good"

War for the Planet of the Apes

 

Despite trying to live a peaceful life in the forest, the ape community is attacked by a human militia group whose leader believes that he must destroy the apes or humanity is doomed. When an assassination attempt on his life leaves ape leader Caesar bereft he embarks on a journey of vengeance.

 

Another somewhat melancholy film in the Apes series. Well worth a look if you've enjoyed the other two; you soon forget that you're watching digital characters. My main complaint is that not only does Caesar leave his people, he takes his entire command crew with him.

The Dark Knight Rises has been on our pending pile since it came out on Blu Ray(we didn't get round to it at cinema), so we watched Batman Begins, next we'll watch The Dark Night again.

 

Batman Begins was as good as I remember, still a solid 10/10

The Dark Knight 9.5/10, still really good, but I think it tries to be a bit too clever, and some of the bits are a bit too silly to stop it getting 10/10

watched Dark Knight Rises, not seen it before, we really enjoyed it, not quite as good as the others so 9/10, but still good even if a bit sillier and cheesier than the previous one. I think at the time a lot of ppl moaned about Bane, or maybe it was more fanboys moaning about something not being quite like comic book, or maybe ppl felt they shouldn't like this one after the first 2 being so good

Change in tone for today's film...

 

Cars 3 - 7/10

missus got some free cinema tickets so we took the kids to the cinema. They enjoyed it, I thought it was ok, like Cars (I've not seen cars 2) didn't really care about the characters, and in places the film is a bit of a tech demo, looks nice, and the "retro" footage is clever.

Hotel Rwanda. Not as harrowing as I'd imagined, although the bumpy road scene was disturbing. Then watched it again with the DVD commentary of the director and the actual Paul, very interesting.

 

The politics were simplified a bit too much, in terms of Hutu and Tutsi history, but the rest was pretty accurate.

What happened to Monday

 

In a world where families are limited to one child due to overpopulation, a set of identical septuplets must avoid being put to a long sleep by the government and dangerous infighting while investigating the disappearance of one of their own.

 

Good little film, knew nothing about it before watching it, could have been a full on summer scifi blockbuster with if it'd had a bigger budget but the lack there of doesn't make any less of a great film.

Saw this on Saturday, absolutely loved it. Two of my favourite actors together did not disappoint, I just love Samuel L Jackson's laugh! The plot is okay, but I always go into these types of films not expecting much from the plot and to just sit back and enjoy it for what it is. Win!

Dark Tower

 

As a massive Stephen King fan I was hoping for a lot from this - expecting it to be the start of a sequence covering the eight books of the Dark Tower series.

 

Disappointed though, Idris Elba was a great choice for Roland but the plot of the film only bore basic resemblance to the first book. Chunks of later works wedged in without any obvious reason, pathways between worlds changed from the original ideas, and the whole thing only ran to 95 minutes which was a surprise.

 

Whether you've read the books, or never heard of them, it's not a great representation. I hear there are plans to continue with more films, and possibly a TV series, the latter would have been a better choice to convey the thousands of pages of story and character development.
