Garacesh Posted June 5, 2017 Posted June 5, 2017 I really don't understand why everyone is raving about it and the reviews are so high? It's not a patch on the Marvel movies in general or anywhere close to the standards set by the recent Nolan Batman movies. I haven't seen any of the recent Batman/Superman/Combo-Meal movies, but then again I don't really care about Batman or Superman as characters.. I'm not too interested in Wonder Woman either, though I like what I've seen of Gal Gadot from the Fast and Furious movies. There's certainly worse actresses than her getting steady work. A lot of the film's positive rep is coming from the feminist crowd. (And I'm not saying that to disparage it, just as a point - I'm all for women having lead roles, and Wonder Woman is about as 'female lead role' as it gets.)
LeMarchand Posted June 7, 2017 Author Posted June 7, 2017 Wonder Woman Much more fun than any of the DCCU so far and they actually have realised that not all their films have to be devoid of colour! There are some rousing moments and even a bit of a surprise towards the end (two surprises if you're a bit slow). I enjoyed it a lot and would recommend it to anyone who is already interested. All that said, it does seem to be a bit over-praised, possibly because critics don't want to be accused of being misogynistic/anti-feminist. It's way too long, though the prime candidate for the cutting room floor is the gorgeous opening which I felt was a lovely palate cleanser after the dour tone of most of the DCCU (it didn't feel too long, though). Also, as mentioned above, the ending descends into a CGI scrap (with WW displaying all sorts of extra powers).

I started looking for on-line reviews about half way through, this was my favourite "‘Dirty Dancing” is 30 years old. LeMarchand Posted June 14, 2017 Author Posted June 14, 2017 I too saw Tom Thumb vs The Mummy/Tell 'em about the Mummy, Tommy/Yummy Mummy. (Poor, I know, but irresistible. Plus all 3 probably better than this). Was disappointed. The film was more or less what I was expecting from the trailers, but it suffered "blockbuster bloat" (too many "cool" scenes) and all fell quite flat. It spent too much of its energy trying to set up the "Dark Universe" at the expense of telling a concise, coherent story. Sofia Boutella was good in the title role, at times making you feel sorry for her (even though she was an evil beeatch) and Tom Cruise, as ever, gives it his all and takes his top off (please, Tom, we've all seen your chest - give it a rest). It's all a bit "meh", though; for the budget, it should have been much better. If you want to see an action-adventure "Mummy" film, go for the Brendan Fraser ones - even the third was more entertaining than this. P.S. Why didn't the seemingly unlimited resources of Russell Crowe's lot fit decent wiring and fire suppression in their lab? Or create a wearable/timed drug delivery system for him? 1

I saw it last night - hadn't read this thread until this morning - and it really is poor. I don't mind a popcorn move, but this was just awful compared to the Brendan Fraser Mummy films. Lots of continuity errors as well with the mummy popping up all over the place almost instantly. I particularly liked the way they ran out of the Natural History Museum and managed to run to the Houses of Parliament in less than 60 seconds. Good going that! It was just lazy film making that ripped off quite a few other films as well. Anyone notice the similarity with An American Werewolf in London with his cursed dead friend? And Russel Crowe was hamming it up for all he was worth! As one who has flown on a C130 several times I can tell you for a fact that the last thing you can do is have a conversation in one! You have to wear ear defenders they are that loud inside!

Unfortunately they choose two chancers who are their female equivalents. I wasn't expecting a lot from this, but was pleasantly surprised. It's no classic, but it did make me laugh (especially the "special" massage scene).
