Logan

I mean, I get it, it's a Wolverine film, a character mostly defined by his aggressive tendencies and his mutant claws, but there was a bit too much violence, I reckon. And it was incredibly gory for a 15.

Overall it was enjoyable, unpredictable at times and incredibly predictable at others. It kept pretty reasonably to comic-canon (it strays wildly at some points, but, y'know.. Hollywood.) but given that Marvel comics have so many different universes and different takes on the same character, I'm not going to gripe about that too much.

Character development unfortunately goes the same way as most films these recent years: 70% without change then rush the lot in at the end.

The [reveal at the farm], whilst it was reasonably explained earlier in the film, and I get the symbology behind it, it still felt a bit gimmicky.

Overall? It's a'ight. But the potential the plot had suffered in favour of gratuitous violence.

I liked the movie, the gore etc, well its wolverine.

As for the whole marvel timeline stuff, well damn I have no idea how this all fits... what x-men timeline are we on now?

Wasn't the last wolverine movie further in the future, if it was in the past wasn't his claws removed?

I found it a bit like the last captain America movie, think to hard about it an the plot just doesn't work, so just enjoy it as the closet we'll ever get to a Tarantino x-men movie.

Just sat through it, it was ok. Not a patch on 28 Days Later IMHO, still my scariest zombie film.

You may like "The Girl With All The Gifts". Bit of a different take on zombies, reminded me of The Last of Us. Liked the ending too :)

Best to think of it as an alternative universe/"what if?" sort of thing with a lot of ties to existing continuity, but not necessarily part of it IMHO.

Well that's what they did with Iron Man/Avengers/et al. Marvel Cinematic Universe. I assume the same concept holds true for X-Men/Deadpool/etc.

Had a few days off ill last week so watched a few films that Mrs F won't particularly want to watch.

Hateful 8 - pretty standard Tarantino film for me, nothing out of the ordinary

Supersonic - Quite enjoyed this, have always been a huge Oasis fan.

The David Brent film (can't remember the exact name) - This was dire, very dated comedy for me, probably would have been funny when I was at Uni.

I watched Trainwreck on Saturday and loved it. Reminded me of the first tiem I saw 40 year old virgin and laughed my behind off. Any Schumer is awesome in it.

I watched "Fist Fight" last Wednesday - fair to say, Ice Cube and Charlie Day nailed it, I actually started to choke from laughing too much. I definitely recommend people who enjoy comedy, to go and watch it.

Kong: Skull Island

Basically Ape-ocalypse Now. Sorry, couldn't resist. Bunch of gun-happy soldiers with seemingly inexhaustible ammo supplies have to babysit a group of scientists/surveyors who are investigating a newly found island. Turns out that (as some of the scientists suspected) there are things there...

I'm not a huge fan of Giant Monster movies, but I really enjoyed this. The 70's era setting really worked and I felt that the way sympathy was elicited for Kong worked much better than in other Kong films. Bit worried that the tie in with the Hollow Earth theory means that anyone hoping to do a Pellucidar film or (even better) Jeff Long's "The Descent" will be accused of ripping them off.

I wouldn't buy the DVD, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Mme LeMarchand was not at all impressed, though.

P.S. There's a post credits scene that isn't really worth staying for, but if you do - don't panic too much when it starts.

Midnight Special

After snatching his son from an apocalypse cult Michael Shannon, his school chum Joel Edgerton and later the boy's mother (Kirsten Dunst) attempt to cross the country to get the child to a place where he "needs" to be.

Basically an indie remake of Starman (down to a Carpenter-esque score). I appreciated that not everything was spelled out, and it gave you pause for thought in the aftermath (what does happen when the action is over?) but not one I'd recommend.

Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight. 100 min long romantic walk and talks through Vienna, Paris, and Greece. 10 min long takes. Same two people when they're 20, 30 and 40 approx. Hopefully they'll continue to make them. The argument at the end of the latest one was great.

Saw the new Beauty and the Beast last night. Pretty good I thought, Emma Watson's acting and singing were spot on. Special effects including the Beast were really good.

I saw this yesterday with the kids. Not really a 12a IMO.

Great fun popcorn movie though and the effects were very good. Just don't expect a storyline beyond the initial 20 mins that just sets things up. Beyond this it's lots of running and screaming with giant creatures.

The big nasty lizard beasties reminded me of something though and for the life of me I can't remember what. Possibly the heads of those large desert snakes/worms in Beetlejuice?

They kinda remind me of Deathrippers from WARMACHINE.

Lego Batman, good, 6 jokes before the film even started

Get Out, good, funny, propaganda for the TSA

Kong, ok

Logan, good, a little long

Strangers on a Train, good, slightly slow after the start, but then picks up when it becomes more psychological

A United kingdom

Based on the story of Prince Seretse Khama of Botswana, who met and fell in love with a (white) English woman in post WW2 Britain. When they decide to marry they face opposition from her parents, his family, his people (some of whom aren't happy about having a white queen) and the British government (Boo! Hiss!) who don't want the marriage to upset neighbouring South Africa (Double Boo! Hiss!) who are just instituting apartheid.

Covers a lot of the same ground as director Amma Asante's previous - and superior - Belle (it even shares a few cast members) and takes similar liberties with history to present a more "cinematic" experience, though some of the locations used in Botswana were the actual locations where events took place. Quite good if you like this sort of thing, but fatally flawed by the short shrift given to the romance at the beginning of the film. As a consequence the bond between the pair never truly convinces.
