But has he got the right man? Grim but utterly gripping, and enough clues are dropped to enable the audience to work out what is going on. Well worth a look, but not an "easy" watch.

LeMarchand Posted July 2, 2017 Author Posted July 2, 2017 The Finest Hours Old-fashioned but thoroughly entertaining based-on-a-true-story action/disaster movie. Not sure why this didn't do better at the box office. Well worth a look if you like this sort of thing, and one of the few of its ilk where it turns out hat Hollywood has hardly embellished the true story.
spacebar Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 I watched two over the weekend. Nocturnal Animals, which was ok, but I did not understand the plot and thought the ending was poor beyond the basic parts. And Moonlight, which was much better, although again I did not really like the ending.
Sheridan Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 Just watched My Way which I believe is a Korean film set in the Second World War about two rival runners who end up fighting for various sides having been captured! It has some pretty amazing special effects, especially the d day scenes towards the end, and you hardly notice the subtitles after the first few minutes! It was a eBay find and well worth the few quid it cost!

Yoko Tani and Cali Raia transporting a prisoner Ric Young, with Tsai Chin thrown in for good measure.
LeMarchand Posted July 9, 2017 Author Posted July 9, 2017 Inferno (2016) Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) is once again caught up in a ridiculous conspiracy that can only be solved with his unique skills. This time he must thwart a plot to solve overpopulation by a drastic cull of humanity. Except another character seems more than capable of working out the clues and (obviously) the bad guy's plan is incredibly and unnecessarily complex. I'm also pretty sure that the World Health Organization would love the resources and authority that they are portrayed as having here. It is better than some of the reviews would suggest, but hard to take seriously. If you're at a loose end it may be worth a go, otherwise find something better to do.
Garacesh Posted July 10, 2017 Posted July 10, 2017 Baby Driver (Spoiler-free) An incredibly-skilled young man is employed as a getaway driver for criminals. A job goes wrong. Gunfights, car chases and stunt doubles ensue. I wasn't 100% taken by what I'd seen of the film (which is basically just TV ads) but it was very enjoyable. The last five minutes started to drag on a bit, but overall it was good action movie that kept its plot simple enough that it wasn't full of holes.

Hah! mrs_sparkeh and I watched this last night. I must admit that we questioned the resources available to the WHO, I didn't realised they were that tooled up or had authority over every other organisation in the world Also I called it from the start regarding the affiliation of a certain character. It was fairly enjoyable nonsense but total nonsense nonetheless.

Despicable Me 3: Pretty funny, not as good as 2. Baby Driver: Super stylish, excellent driving. See if it you like cinema. Wonder Woman: Pretty good, plot wandered a bit. A Beautiful Mind: Good, but I wanted more maths

I was worried it would suffer from 'Fast and Furious syndrome' where cars have 15-billion gears etc, but actually, it was pretty well-grounded. Trailer gives you a good idea of the tone to expect. Nice enough, but because it is fairly close to the real story it lacks the traditional ending that this sort of sports drama tends to have. Worth a look if you're in the mood but not one to rush to find.

War For The Planet Of The Apes: Liked it more than Dawn, in which I thought the apes story was a tad simplistic. Better CGI, better plot, a few plot holes. Good misdirection on a plot point, interesting what's happening to the humans. Spiderman Homecoming: liked it, an actually teenage spiderman, good level of interaction/separation from the other films, using them to set up the character arc well. Michael Keaton reprises his role as You Know Who.

Saw A Swingin' Summer also - with Raquel Welch in an early role and Lori Williams shaking her stuff. Several 60s groups - The Rip Chords, Gary Lewis & The Playboys and The Righteous Brothers groups appear too.

mavhc Posted July 24, 2017 Posted July 24, 2017 Lawrence of Arabia, rather long, but has to cover a lot, and even then there's little historical background. Mostly looks good, a couple of seemingly dodgy bluescreen type shots. Pretty sand dunes (which are geographically completely wrong). Effective as an anti war film, and the politics of the story are still the most important political stuff going on today with ISIS. Watch it, then read the true story.
LeMarchand Posted July 24, 2017 Author Posted July 24, 2017 Another "revisit of an old film whilst doing some sewing": Generation X Shot as a pilot for a series that never materialised and with some swear words added in post to up the certificate for home release this is only really of interest to completist X-fans. Does have a couple of amusing lines (Jubilee's mom, on hearing Emma Frost wants to admit Jubilee to Xavier's school: Is it a school for strippers?) but is hampered by poor effects/budget. Also, how did Jeremy Ratchford (above right) turn into the fat cop in "Cold Case" only 7 years later?
