Kingsman: The Golden Circle

 

If you enjoyed the first one, you should enjoy this.

 

Particular shout outs to:

 

Jane Goldman's script. I'd thought (after a great start with Stardust, Kick Ass, X-Men: First Class and Kingsman) she'd somewhat lost her mojo with "Miss Peregrine" but here she manages to include most of the stuff people loved about the first film with enough of a twist to keep it fresh, make a miraculous resurrection work by actually not forgetting that the method works later and even redeems the notorious "bottom" joke from the first film.

 

Matthew Vaughan's direction is suitably comic book like - some of the poses in the fight scenes could have been ripped from a comic, but (unlike many directors) he manages to make it clear and visible what's going on during the fight scenes.

 

The celebrity guest star that appears near the middle proves game for a laugh. I was sure that it was a lookalike, but apparently was the actual person.

 

I liked that Eggsy hadn't forgotten his romance from the first film and that he was dedicated enough to it to be unhappy about some of the work he was called to do.

 

Finally Julianne Moore still looks great in her mid 50s, and doesn't seem to be afraid of a few wrinkles - unlike some actresses half her age.

Watched Wonderwoman last night. A decent action flick although the ending did feel a bit anticlimactic if I am honest.

But all in all not a bad movie. Most definitely better than Batman Vs Superman.

 

My only one issue with all the DC movies so far is that they all just feel like setups for the next movie/movies instead of a movie by their own rights. Also, no Easter egg at the end of the movie. Perhaps they thought that was a Marvel thing and they didn't want to copy it

Signed, Sealed, Delivered: Home Again

 

The Post Office detectives track down the owners of a valuable antique vase, but discover that - despite the family's need for financial help - that the vase may not be able to help them.

 

Quite sweet, but far from the best in the series (and the resolution makes you wonder if all future problems can be solved in same way). Only really worth a look if you've seen and enjoyed the other movies and/or the show.

Victoria & Abdul - based on the private diary of Abdul

 

Judi Dench on form as Victoria. Eddie Izzard is a very entertaining Bertie, Prince of Wales.

 

Other notables in the strong cast include Michael Gambon as the PM, Tim Piggott-Smith as Victoria's private secretary and Simon Callow as Puccini.

 

While the treatment of the "Hindustanis" by the majority is sad, there are quite a few funny parts throughout the film as the Royal household struggles with a foreigner in a position of influence. I really enjoyed it.

I went to see the new Kingsman movie at the weekend, the Mrs wanted to see it for Channing Tatum and was more than a little disappointed that he wasn't in it much, I thought it was more of the same and like the way they linked back to things that happened in the first film. I'd say its a good one to see if you have one of those unlimited passes and feel you need to get your money out of it but if not wait for it to arrive on Netflix.

Might post a longer review elsewhere and link to it when I have time, but yes - if you're already interested - this is well worth a look. Is it as good as (or better than, as some have said) the original? Definitely not for me.

I'm really tempted by this, but I'm not sure if it would change how I view the original ore not. If it attempts to clarify some of the ambiguities (other than in a possible alternate reality kind of way) then I don't want to know. I like it when films leave me thinking about loose ends that have not been tied-up.

It may change your view, but while the trailers suggest there is an answer to the "big" question I feel that it's still up for interpretation.

I'd say not, unless you have the hots for Gosling. In some ways it may be a better film and I can't fault its ambition, but if you didn't like the first one this will likely leave you cold.

I've honestly never made it all the way through the first Blade Runner, I never tried to watch it until a few years ago and I have a feeling that there is a lot or rose tint in the vision of the people that hold it in such high regard.

 

I'll watch the new one when it's available to stream but probably won't go out of my way to see it before then.

Possibly, though I watched it when the big box set of various cuts came out and it still held up. That said, my first viewing was an advance showing that I travelled up to London for and it was the first film I came out of feeling that I'd watched something that was filmed on location in the future. Not many films since have given me that feeling.

I really enjoyed the new Blade Runner. It was slow and contemplative in parts but unusually for me I didnt get bored. There was a lot to look at and the characters were interesting and the storyline fascinating

Blade Runner 2049, good, but not as good as the first, which is the best film ever. Excellent central idea, good themes, a little long, if Ryan Gosling could walk a bit faster it would have been 10 mins shorter. Don't think it's as quotable or iconic as the original though.

I've heard the director's cut will include scenes where his expression changes to something other than slightly sad/bemused.

I watched Blade Runner last night. First 90 mins were awesome, but then I got a bit bored and stopped caring. Luckily for me, I found Ryan Gosling to be a solid 8/10 do-ability, but even after 2.5 hours that was starting to wane.

 

I haven't watched the original.

 

Would recommend seeing on a cheapo night where you can get half price tix or whatever.
