They thought it was good but too long and very depressing One of my heads couldn't get into Moana, so took the kids to see this instead! He initially regretted his decision, but found that it was the first time that the family spent the whole evening discussing what they'd watched, Of course, this may be code for he had to spend the evening reassuring the little ones that death wasn't coming... Saw Manchester By the Sea last night, perfect film if you're a fan of grieving. Can kind of see why Affleck is getting the praise he is but it's not a film to judge on it's trailer, was surprised by the amount of humour. Also lack of Michelle Williams character is a bit disappointing when you look at the whole story. Seeing La La Land tonight, thank God as I've kicked the absolute a of out it for the last 5 weeks. Quite fancy Manchester when it's on Sky Movies (not a cinema trip for me - not that it's likely to make our local emporium). Let us know what La La Land is like. It sounds like I might enjoy it (if there's not too much jazz) but the trailer I watched didn't do a good job of selling it to me.

Trailers had me sold immediately and I get the impression it really is a film that just sucks you right in.

Headed to Spotify and those tracks didn't do it for me. The trailer I saw seemed almost embarrassed to admit it was a musical, though it was oddly less coy about there being dancing.

Apparently C15th Spain was swathed in almost impenetrable smoke apart from the bits that were under a dust cloud. Modern day Madrid is slightly less smoky/dusty while other parts of the world fare a bit better. As a consequence it's often difficult to see what the heck is happening on screen. More fatally, it's often hard to care as any sense of peril is undercut by us knowing that most of it isn't "really" happening. On the whole, a bit "meh". Full marks for using Spanish with subtitles where appropriate, but otherwise unless you want to see Fassbender take off his shirt or Brendan Gleeson applying a martial arts smackdown to a bunch of henchmen(!) witch Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 Rogue One again - got more of an idea why people are going on about it being true to the original. BUT on second watching, the plot holes are very obvoius and the female lead has little or no charisma really

Also started 22 Jump Street, but for some reason the end of the recording was missing. What I saw was OK if you like that sort of self-aware take on a cheesy old show.

mavhc Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Paths Of Glory -- started off kinda stiff, but once the first scene is done it's good La La Land -- a modern throwback hollywood musical, really good Manchester By The Sea -- A series of unfortunate events, nothing flashy, good drama about family tragedy A Monster Calls -- drama and animation, the power of stories to help us deal with the world, for children from about 10 and adults.
Sagima Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Watched Big Trouble In Little China at the weekend. I probably don't need to explain the film to anyone. I'd never seen it before, although, obviously I had heard of it. It might beat Mannequin as the most 80s film I've ever watched. Unfortunately nowhere near as good as mannequin. I couldn't take those guys wearing baskets on their head seriously (even in the context of the general ridiculousness of the film) - that said it is still better than quite a lot of the more recent stuff I've watched over the last few years.

Not truly awful, but I found it hard to like or care about most of the main characters. Definitely not the romp the trailer promised.
