Dr Strange

Hmmm. Bit slow at the beginning and somehow Benedict Cumberbatch isn't quite your Marvel guy. But the touches of humour were good and the CGI is impressive in places.

The three main characters were English too although Benedict did try a rather dodgy American accent

Saw that too recently. My favourite Marvel film for a while. Probably as far back as the original avengers.

Possibly one of the dumbest, grossest films ever. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it but (Forgive me Father, for I have sinned) I will admit to laughing.

Ip Man, and Dr Strange. Both pretty good, although neither passed the bechdel test.

 

Dr Strange and his sidekick, capey, were amusing together.

 

Ip Man seemed to suffer from being based on a real person, in terms of the amount of tragedy that could befall on him

At the weekend I was offered the options to watch either The Interview or The Hallows. Although nether really appealed to me I eventually chose The Hallows.

 

The plot is basically some people from London move to the middle of nowhere in Ireland. The man is employed by a logging company to cut down some of a forest which upsets the superstitious locals as they think the forests spirits will get upset. They do.

 

No where near as bad as its IMDB score would make out. In fact I thought it was reasonably good although they do make some questionable decisions. I did think at one point they might all die from carbon monoxide poisoning from the petrol/diesel generator they had in their basement but they spent quite a while in the room with it running and it definitely wasn't in the top 3 problems they faced.

 

Worth it if you come across it - not worth money or effort unless you really like the genre

Another one for the new Doctor Strange film.

 

Was a bit disappointed (maybe I wasn't it the right mood, as the Yonderland ep I watched later barely raised a titter). It was OK, and well acted, but I felt it lacked that spark. Plus it went on for far too long. They could have saved an hour if only they'd used

A Street Cat Named Bob

 

 

Not one that's destined to be a classic, but quite a sweet film. Bob is mainly played by the original Bob and the author gets a cameo "I almost felt that I lived through it". Was a bit confused by Luke Treadaway's accent as it seemed to veer into Aussie (a mistake that American actors often make), but it turned out to be spot on as the character spent a lot of his childhood there.

 

Worth a look if you're a cat person, but not really a "must see".

Having finished the complete Lovejoy last month, I was looking through my collections for something else to watch and I realised I haven't watched all the transformers episodes yet. Three weeks later and I finally finish Season 2 (f**k me that's a long season) and I am ready to watch Transformers: The Movie (1984).

The TV series made me realise just how many transformers I owned - then pretty much all of them got killed in the movie though and I didn't really get into the new ones.

I have seen the film before - I definately went with my Dad to watch it when I was younger. I have a feeling I caught the end of it while I was at university as well but this is the first time I've really watched it in a while.

 

I remember Ultra Magnus being in the movie and Hot Rod, Kup, Blurr, Arcee and I was under the impression that it would follow on from the TV series but no, no back story to any of those people just a 20 year jump into the mystical future of 2005.

It apparently took that long for Megatron to learn how to shoot. 50 odd episodes of the TV series and he hardly manages to hit anyone at all (except Starscream) but 5 minutes into the film and he's not only managed to hit but actually killed loads of transformers.

 

I didn't recall just how many transformers get wiped out but thankfully the Dinobots survived (except the one my brother had - ha!) and that's all that matters really.

I'd have happily watched a series consisting of just Grimlock and Optimus Prime sorting out the world's problems. Unfortunately it looks like the Protectobots might have survived too (boo!)

 

I had forgotten how good the soundtrack was - I have had Dare stuck in my head all morning.

 

For those of you who haven't watched (and you've had 32 years to get around to it) it there's this planet eating transformer (Unicron - voiced by Orson Welles) that can only be killed by one thing in the universe.

Rather than avoid it (doesn't seem a huge challenge given the size of the universe) he goes straight to where it is while the Autobots and Decepticons are embroiled in a war and killing each other left, right and centre.

Unicron causing the loss of a couple of moons (eating them) and the imminent loss of their planet, isn't quite enough to end the civil war between the Autobots and Decepticons so they do a very good job of killing each other, some get resurrected (Megatron becomes the not-quite-so-good Galvatron and a whole bunch of Decepticons seem to get turned into Scourges and Cyclonus') but most of them seem to stay dead.

Eventually Unicron is blown up by no-one's favourite Autobot, Rodimus Prime, using the one thing that could kill him. Handily Unicron's head seems to replace one of the moons he ate earlier in the film,

Unicron may have survived had he not decided to eat it as it didn't look like it would have caused him much harm if it had been kept safely outside of his body.

 

Even though I know it's a cartoon and even though I know he comes back - "Heroes Never Die!" - Optimus Prime's death still gave me a lump in my throat.

Loved the film, best thing I've watched all year. Could listen to the soundtrack all day (and I just might - especially the rock version of the theme tune!)

 

Never has the disclaimer "Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental" felt so necessary as it does in this cartoon film about giant genicidal alien robots.

Absolutely love the transforms movie. I believe I cried at all the death when I was little and losing Big O still gets me a little bit.

 

Love the soundtrack though, I still listen to it when i need to get something done in a hurry

 

None of the live action films even come close either.

I saw it last night. It was a good idea that, whist intelligent, just didn't really take off and the film just seemed to fade out at the end I thought.

Worth watching on DVD but as an exam grade would be a 'B'.

Was going to see Arrival; not sure now. Mme LeMarchand isn't keen, we're really busy, and it's on at a rubbish time...

 

Saw The Mechanic (the remake). Meh. Not horrible, but not really worth the bother unless you either love orange colour grading or The Stath.

Going to see it 'blind' I must admit the trailers were a little obscure.

I thought it would be a jaunt through 1920's New York catching escaped creatures but this was mostly the second story line, not the main one.

I enjoyed Fantastic Beasts. It probably deserves the 4 star reviews I've sen rather than 5. It has a 12A rating for a reason. This is not a film for young kids

Just watches Nativity 3 with my daughter. Dear god what a terrible film on every level. Had to watch several episodes of walking dead just to clear my mind.

I loved the first film, but the second was awful. Don't know if i can be bothered to waste my time on the third.

 

 

Begin AgainFrom the writer/director of "Once" and "Sing Street", another story about musicians and music. Well worth a look if you've enjoyed either of the others. It's similarly amusing and low-key, but does actually have a "proper" ending (wait for the credits for this!).
