The Age of Adaline

 

Blake Lively stars as a woman who stops ageing after an accident in the 1920s. In the present day she meets a young man who she begins to fall for (Game of Thrones' Daario Mk2 Michiel Huisman) but can she afford to allow herself to love? Things get more complicated when she meets his parents and realises that his father (Harrison Ford) was her last love back in the Sixties.

 

I'm normally a sucker for this sort of thing - heck, I'm one of the few people who liked (A New York) Winter's Tale - but couldn't get into this one. Adaline herself was kinda dull, present day bf came across as stalkerish (but I guess it's "romantic" to act that way if you're good-looking and rich) and greasy (he appears to shower in baby oil) and the voice-over was misjudged (we didn't need a long, pseudo-scientific explanation for Adaline's condition - if anything it would have been better to tie it in with the comet mentioned later). That said, the ladies in the house had a higher opinion of it.

 

I'd say that if you want to see a GoT actor in a story about an immortal looking for love Nikolaj Coster-Waldau's short-lived "New Amsterdam" TV series is far superior and if you want a Michiel Huisman fix, he was far less greasy in his boy band days.

 

 

If the guy who played young Harrison Ford can act (he's best known as an impressionist) I can't believe he's not on the Han Solo shortlist.

Not awful, but I had to check IMDb to remember what film I watched at the weekend! Far too much hand-wringing over Murphy's family for my liking, and obviously toned right down from the original (though it's seemingly OK to show a guy who consists of little more than a head a the contents of his chest cavity...).

Solace

 

Anthony Hopkins stars as a psychic the FBI call on to help solve a series of killings. The trailer gives away a bit too much plot, but let's just say things get complicated. If you can swallow the premise, it's a thoroughly entertaining thriller.

 

The Intern

 

Robert De Niro goes to work for Anne Hathaway as a "senior citizen intern"and is soon sorting out her problems and those of his co-workers using his old-time knowledge and attitudes. An amiable enough comedy, but it's more an pleasant time filler than a must-see.

Meh, wasn't horrible, wasn't good either.

I have always liked batman, Bale's to be specific, but the character in general. Think of him in Dark Knight, think of how he is portrayed, then blow him out of all proportion 'comic book style' and you get close to how 'comical' his character is in this.

Watched Cemetery Junction at the weekend. It was alright I suppose - very little of Ricky Gervais or Stephen Merchant which my husband was pleased with.

 

In a nutshell it's about some working class young people who aren't happy with their lives and live somewhere near Reading in what might be the 70s or the 60s (I didn't work it out)

 

They appear to be unhappy because they are young, mostly single, have jobs for life, a loving family, money enough not to worry about things and in spite of living 20 years in a region of working class Reading around the aforementioned decade 3/4 of them also have perfect teeth and looks and appear to have been brought up in a wealthy London suburb (that last bit could just be the actors not doing enough acting or some poor casting). Or they might be unhappy because they are just spoiled tw*ts - who knows

 

At a push I might give it a 5/10 as some parts of it are funny.

 

The previous weekend we watched The Worlds End. An altogether much better film although not what I was expecting - it seemed to be one type of film and then after an unexpected decapitation in a toilet it became something else entirely.

The first hour is pretty good - the last part was a bit rubbish but the way the film was going along that was probably inevitable. worth a look though if you haven't seen it

Had been looking forward to this (love "Yonderland") and saw it for a fiver which wasn't much more expensive than a rental. It was funny, but not as funny as I had hoped. My enjoyment may have been tempered by a sleepy Mme LeMarchand who didn't want to go to bed and watch the film another day, but kept falling asleep.

Overall, I quite enjoyed it. It wasn't as good as the genuine article but the majority of the roles were well cast and the movie was a lot of fun. The only characters that really didn't work for me was the actor playing Cpl Jones and the warden.

Batman Vs Superman

 

Better than I was expecting, but still too drab. It would have been better to have another Superman film before this one, but I guess DC are desperate to play catch-up with Marvel. If you're wondering where Aquaman and a couple of others "minor" heroes fit in, try not to blink.

 

Also would have been much shorter without all the blinking s l o w m o t i o n...

I'd say: action prologue covering the Waynes' death (in slow motion, obvs) yet again - though this does come into play later - and giving reasons why Superman is considered a rogue by some followed by some bad dreams for Bruce, a lot of setting up for the climax and subsequent films then the title match and a surprise Boss Battle that seems to last for ages.

 

A couple of Easter Eggs in there for people who were hoping they'd actually make Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns".

Better than I was expecting, didnt finish as strong as it started, did give me a lot of laughs however. I am a Ryan Reynolds fan, so that counts some way.

Finally got my copy of Star Wars The Force Awakens last night, and watched the movie for the first time.

 

Overall, not a bad movie. I *love* BB-8. I did have a few issues with it. The coincidences were just too great throughout and needed more "setup". Editing was odd in places to me too, and pacing was a bit odd - the last 15 minutes of the movie seemed very rushed. I'd give it a 6.5/10.

My gripe of it was that just too much is rehashed from earlier films. Also that [spoilers] BB8 had the missing part of the map. Which means they had a map of the entire solar system, minus a tiny portion of it. Couldn't they just comb that missing region and find him? I s'pose he could be using the force to hide from scanners etc but at least they could have tried to explain it, y'know? They tried to cram too much into the screentime they had, I think.

Best film I have seen in a long time. Not sure the trailer does it justice as it makes a look a bit more like a dumb action film that it is.

Henry Rollins is fantastic and the film feels fresh and interesting.

They may have the bits you're missing but might be waiting to release it after they've done the standard blu ray release, box set release, whole saga release because then they could have episode 7 special edition with an extra 30 minutes of the stuff that appears to be missing (perhaps two releases special edition followed by special edition boxset where the box set has a bit more so people buy that too).

The star wars films are all about the same length (i could probably check) and they may not have though it worth breaking with that for some hobbit/lotr-like epic length movie that didn't really add anything special to the story (they may have a third whole saga box set called epic edition with the extra bits in it and the first six movies too).

Thinking about it they'll probably be a 7 movie boxset and an 8 movie box set to get through first so it might be a few years.

Yeah, the director explains it as being a riff on the old Roger Moore style innuendo Bond Film endings. But it just doesn't work for me.

Went to see the new Jungle Book film last night.

 

It was quite possibly the worst ever cinema I've ever been in (Odeon in Beckenham for the record, avoid!) but the film itself was really good. Bill Murray, Idris Elba, Ben Kingsley and Christopher Walken were all inspired casting and played their parts excellently. Even the boy playing Mowgli managed to not irritate me. The story was sufficiently different from the cartoon to make it worth watching too.

 

Well worth seeing, recommended
