Elizabeth Banks has to get to work after a drunken night out and nothing goes right. Quite funny. Nativity 2: Danger in the Manger. Poor. Not a patch on the first film. Star Trek (2009). (Rewatch) Still stands up well. The Mummy (1999). Forgot how much fun this is. Big Hero 6. Quite entertaining, but didn't really amaze me. Iron Sky. Partially crowd-funded film that has a moon mission launched by President Sarah Palin finding a hidden Nazi base on the moon. Not as much fun as it sounds, but not a bad effort.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (e.g. #5): better than Ghost Protocol (#4). Does what you expect it to, and enjoyably so. Star Wars: The Force Awakens: better than the prequels. Does what you expect it to, and enjoyably so. Last Stand: Arnie plays a sheriff in a small town that's the last stop for a drug lord fleeing across the border. Enjoyable. Arnie is hitting a rich vein of playing himself as an old man. Wild Card: Jason Statham plays a man who has to stand around and listen to a lot of maid-and-butler dialogue ("Well as you know, Jason, we agreed two days ago that you'd pretend to get beaten up by me so I could impress a girl...") and then goes off to get a revenge when a girl he knows is stuffed in a fridge and we turned it off after twenty minutes because it was awful. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974 original): has not aged well.

Kingsman The secret Service (again) - Loved it - tongue in cheek at times but well worth the 2nd watch Vacation - Follow up to national lampoons vacation - very funny. Big Ass Spider (SciFi channel) - Don't, Just don't!!!

CHR1S Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 The H8ful Eight - Was "ok", I'm a big Tarantino fan and I enjoyed the film, but it was nothing special. Well filmed and all but just not up there with some of his best. The Martian - One of the best films I have seen in a long time, witty, believable and didn't go all America saved the day yalllllll. (Well it did a little).
sonofsanta Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Ooh yes, finally saw The Martian this weekend and thought it utterly marvellous. They trimmed the book down very intelligently, kept it light-hearted, but thoroughly engrossing. Goosebumps at the end. Also tried to watch Tomorrowland but it was so dull, so much like a Disney Channel movie (complete with bland/annoying actors), that we turned it off after an hour and went to bed. Really disappointed. I wanted so much to like it.

Shame as it's an extremely well filmed documentary and pulls no punches. It is going to be screened on Russian TV later in the year. The reaction should be enlightening.

Childers was a pretty obnoxious individual (violent, smack addict/drug dealing Hell's Angel thug - though the film is at pains to point out that a man he brutally stabbed survived) who found religion and went on to found an orphanage to help children in South Sudan/North Uganda. Quite interesting, but seems to gloss over a few points. Childers' (reluctant) baptism doesn't seem to affect him until a couple of scenes later when he receives a message from God that he is to found a church (which seemingly you can just go right ahead and do in the US) and a character alludes to Childers using violence to solve problems in Africa which we don't see until much later. You get the feeling that he found a "good" outlet for his violent tendencies. If it's one that you thought seemed interesting it's worth a look. Otherwise, probably not. P.S. Childers looks more like W. Earl Brown or possibly (on a good day) Titus Welliver than Gerard Butler. Edited January 11, 2016 by LeMarchand Duff formatting
Sagima Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Films I watched over the last couple of weeks Happy Feet 2 - if you've a choice of watching this or spending a week holidaying at HMP Hull - pick the prison. Absolute piece of s**t. I really enjoyed the first one as well - very disappointed Dark skies - Pretty good but really only half a movie. If you are thinking of watching it I'd advise you to wait until the sequel comes out and then watch them both. When the first alien appeared it made me jump - something that rarely happens when I watch films. I don't think it has anything to do with the short-lived 90s TV series of the same name but I never watched it so i'm not 100% on that. Only keri russell really stood out but the other actors were adequate The Awakening - Although I guessed the twist about half way through I still enjoyed it. Definitely worth watching if you come across it on telly. Probably not worth going out of your way for but certainly enjoyable.

Sagima Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Watched Sinister 2 at the weekend. The first film was better - this film I'd struggle to give even a star for effort to. Noone stood out in it, the evil things were over used (less is more in these sort of films I feel) and the creepy children just looked like they'd been playing on their consoles all night. Poor writing and really, the first film deserved a better sequel than that. They really stretched the 20 minutes of plot to fill an hour and a half as well - I'm surprised they didn't have me watch the woman make/carve a chair for 25 minutes to try and get it to the two hour mark.

Mme LeMarchand has read a few of the books it's based on and liked it well enough (though the True Fans hate the changes). I didn't hate it, but I'm hoping we aren't going to be adding the series to the Tivo.

One of the strangest films I have ever seen and something I was very surprised to see her in (at least half the film is her driving around in a van by herself not saying anything). Also watched The Martian (finally, was going to watch at the cinema when it came out but was ill). Brilliant film, great acting, great story, very well made. I haven't read the book it was based on yet but it is on my list now.

Despite the hype, Human Centipede does nothing interesting with the premise or characters. It seems as though the writer thinks a concept is all that is required to make a film.
