Watched Captain America Civil War on Friday with my kids. Was an ok film and I quite enjoyed it but the plot is really weak, its basically Hollywood's answer to every 10 years old's question of "who would win in a fight between X super hero and Y super hero". I still have enough of 10 year old me sitting in the back of my mind to still find it enjoyable but some might not I actually really enjoyed the actor playing Spiderman and the way the character was written, very different to how it has been done in other Hollywood films.

 

I don't think this is giving anything away seeing as everyone already knows the basic plot of the film but, spoilers:

So a group of people that have fought off an alien invasion and stopped a self replicating super powered AI kill bot (and much more) basically get to the point that they are willing to risk killing each within the space of about 2 days for no real reason. The reasons for the disagreements are there but seem flimsy compared to what this group of people have been through.

 

Alternatively they are not really trying properly to stop each other and all sense of danger or tension goes out of the window (there is a scene between Black Widow and Hawkeye when they are fighting that shows this).

 

Tony Stark's character is developed nicely and there is a bit of development on Vision's character but everyone else seems to just be in the film for the action scenes.

 

I enjoyed it but did have a little bit in the back of my mind that kept saying "these characters would just not act like this".

The Jungle Book.

 

The original Disney version was so much better and much more fun than this rehash of great classic. They even cut the vultures scene out of this remake.

The problem with Spiderman recently is that you had Toby Maguire, who was a fantastic Peter Parker but a rubbish Spiderman, and Andrew Garfield who was an amazing Spiderman* but a terrible Peter Parker.

Okay, yeah, that bit was awful. But in general he played Peter Parker pretty well, especially in the first film. And let's not forget, 'that scene' was during the time he was being influenced by Venom, so 'acting out of character' is quite right. (Still an awful scene, though..)

The Jungle Book (2016)

 

Came away with one lasting thought - Christopher Walken as King Louie the giant Orangutan may well have had a gold pocket watch hidden about his personage whilst stuck in Vietnamese prison camp.

 

Talk about lack of depth in his acting.

 

Was ok, not my cup of tea.

Broadly enjoyable (if you like Marvel movies) but far too long. Not sure what they should have cut, but something needed to go. Interesting how much it had in common with Batman vs Superman and was a touch more cerebral than usual. I think I'd be on Team Cap if pushed.

American Mary

 

A promising but broke surgical student goes to a job interview in a strip club and ends up using her surgical skills to save a life. This leads her into a new career in extreme body modifications, but an experience with her tutor sends her down a dark path.

 

Slightly Lynchian. Wouldn't necessarily recommend it, but I did find it interesting.

Pirates of Silicon Valley. 1999 made for TV movie which covers the early days of Microsoft and Apple following Jobs, Gates, Allen, Woz, Balmer etc. A few liberties take with the history but otherwise it gives a good insight into the times and it is generally quite amusing right from the first lines :

 

Steve Jobs: I don't want you to think of this as just a film - some process of converting electrons and magnetic impulses into shapes and figures and sounds. No. Listen to me. We're here to make a dent in the universe. Otherwise, why even be here? We're creating a completely new consciousness, like an artist or poet. That's how you have to think of this. We're rewriting the history of human thought with what we're doing.

 

Ridley Scott: Right. Well, Steven, at the moment I'm a touch more worried about getting light on the actress. Do you know what I mean?

Well worth a look if you like the more head-scratching end of the genre (I'm still struggling to work out how a couple of elements fit in). Given that the story it was (reputedly closely) based on was written in the late 50s, its themes are very up-to-the-minute.

Last night I watched Nine Dead on Netflix, starring Clarissa Sabrina the Teenage Witch Melissa Joan Hart.

 

So, 9 strangers are kidnapped and locked in a room. The masked kidnapper gives them 10 mins to figure out why they are there else one of them dies and the clock is reset.

 

It was pretty good, but I can't help thinking it was the kind of film that would have been really good with a bit of tweaking. Don't want to give anything away but the reasons for some of them being there weren't that understandable which kinda spoiled the end a bit for me. However if you have 90 mins to while away then its worth a watch.

Raw Deal

 

Arnold him self, in his prime of youth killing bad guys with no remorse. Real action classic of the 80s, simple story, simple bad guys and him kicking butt, cracking heads and blasting them away.

 

Can't complain and makes me wish we got more simple classic movies like this.

Terminator Genisys was our weekend film.

 

Better than the last two terminator films but not as good as the first two.

I did like having arnie in it although the explanation as to how he ended up knocking about in the 70s would have been nice to know (presumably the next film).

I also liked having the references from the first two films in it - at one stage, when arnie showed up, my husband was worried it was going to turn into somethign similar back to the future with multiple copies of everyone running around - he finds that quite confusing but thankfully (for him) not.

 

I didn't like having Daenerys and Doctor Who (who would have ever thought they'd be good in a terminator film - it turns out they aren't so big surprise there) in it and the bloke playing JC was just terrible (I mean they could have cast david schwimmer but i'm struggling to think of many people worse and I'm including madonna playing "joan" connor as an option)

Kyle on the other hand was surprisingly good considering how well he "acted" in die hard - my suspicion is someone else cast him and the guys playing the terminators.

There must have been literally dozens of people they could of picked to play sarah more effectively - I might say drawing a woman's name randomly from a hat and finding the actress who happened to have that name might have worked better.

Still enjoyable but they could have put some effort into the casting
