Rewatched H2G2 film, not as good as the series but Zooey Deschannel makes any film worth watching.

I'm almost at the end of Season 1, and I know enough about Daredevil to assume he's this adaptation's version of the-big-K (though they've not explicitly used that word, yet)

 

But yes, his performance so far has been brilliant.

Maybe I'm just contrary, but I much preferred this to "Days of Future Past". Probably my favourite superhero film of the year so far (as fun as Deadpool was, it's appeal was mainly to the 13 year old me). Are we now writing the first 3 off as a changed timeline, btw? It makes no sense unless we are.

The Longest Ride

 

The most recent film based on a Nicholas "The Notebook" Sparks. Yes, it does tug at the requisite heartstrings - but it is one of those films that will have you asking "but why?" a lot. Plus the "history" story never really meshes with the "present day" one. That said, if you liked other films based on his books, you'll probably like this one.

..or should that be WARCRAFT as this is possibly the loudest movie you'll see all year? Not that I'd recommend you do. It's not awful, but suffers from trying to cram too much into one film and giving short shrift to what should be key emotional moments. I've not played the game, so it's possible that players might enjoy it more. If you're interested I'd recommend waiting for VOD/Disc rather than heading to the cinema.

From what I can gather, there's a fair bit of it there (with some changes) and it's relatively easy to work out what the faction/person etc does if you're paying attention. That said, how many people do?

I am an ex-player and I have just watched Warcraft and I was quite disappointed by it, the film felt extremely rushed to me, it missed out gaping chunks of the lore and @LeMarchand is quite correct in that it tried to cram too much in to the little time it had I felt(this type of film would have benefitted from another 30 mins easy), on top of which they played a little bit fast and loose with some of the lore of a massive universe for no real benefit.

 

They also had quite poor character development in the film, you didn't really have anyone on either side to root for I felt and it didn't actually take the time to explain things within the film for the non-player or thresh out the characters enough, Medivh was a massive one that was basically skimmed over with minimal explanations, same for Guldan.

 

The other film I watched recently and thought was ok, was X-Men : Apocalypse, that was quite enjoyable by comparison, it was an improvement on Days of Future past which went wide of the mark for me. Apocalypse could have played out a little better, but it was quite enjoyable viewing, Quicksilver is quite something in this part of the marvel universe.

Yesterday I watched Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, pretty good, not sure it should be so high in the imdb top 250, needed a sequel to complete the story.

I'd agree there has yet to be a great video game based movie, but there have been a few that were entertaining. I think people get too hung up on wanting the films to be exactly like the games. I own the first Mortal Kombat movie and the patchy UK releases of the TV show. Also bought D.O.A. as it was <£2 and it's completely cheesy.

Stay Alive was passable, as a movie-with-a-video-game-as-the-main-plot (as opposed to a movie-based-on-a-video-game)

 

I think, in general, the two media types are somewhat incompatible. Part of what makes video games so enjoyable is the feeling of accomplishment from completing it (or each level, or finding a secret, etc) which just cannot be obtained from passive media. That's not to say a good movie-based-on-a-game can't be done, but since you're missing that active participation that video games offer you need to pay special attention to the 'feel' of it. Things like backdrops and settings become much more important because fans will pick up on this sort of thing. You can't just throw a bunch of CGI into it and hope for the best. Take World of Warcraft for example. Whilst I'm not a fan, I can still respect the immense effort that has gone into crafting the world, all the lore, how different stories interconnect etc, and all that needs to be taken into account when drawing up your scenery and characters.

True - one of my favourites has to be FFVII: Advent Children, but as that's full CG, I'm not sure if it counts.

 

The Resident Evil series isn't too bad at the start - but goes to pot the second they start adding in characters from the games.

 

Some though - are so bad they're actually quite fun.

 

Street Fighter has more cheese than a bloke called Gordon Zola who's just moved to Cheddar Gorge.

Mortal Kombat (and series)? So bad they're funny.

Doom? Are you kidding me?

Super Mario Bros? Bad film-making at it's finest.

 

and as for the upcoming Angry Birds movie - I'm seriously wondering how they'll actually put a plot in there.

There is a (web?)series of Mortal Kombat that is available for free on Steam and is supposed to be pretty good, I haven't watched it yet.

Watched Star Wars 7 on the plane at the weekend. Really enjoyed it - the only thing i didn't like about is was Kylo Ren and I'm not sure if it's the actor, the character or just that he's not darth vader but that was literally the only bit of it I didn't think was brilliant.

 

I have watched a lot of terrible films recently though so it may just be relief at watching something so entertaining.

 

Having caught up on reading this threads films since I've been gone I'll mention that I agree with galway that The Big Lebowski, which may not be the worst film ever, is the worst film I have ever sat through (and I watched the first Independence Day movie)

Coen brother films are somewhat Marmite. Generally speaking, those who like them really like them, those who don't hate them.

 

Burn After Reading had its moments and I quite liked Being Llewyn Davis (mostly due to the music I think) but their others that I've seen I've not been sure about. I couldn't even get half an hour in Fargo for example.
