I feel your pain! When I first tried setting up iPads, I didn't have a clue what I was doing. To be honest, I still don't really understand much but things are much better after switching our MDM to Mosyle from Apple's proprietary Profile Manager! I'm not entirely sure if this post will help you, but I feel I need to try! Can you expand on what you mean by individual login and generic account? Do you mean Apple ID or do you have them setup as shared iPads? Our student devices have no logins, no passcodes, no Apple IDs (ergo, no iCloud). All work is saved to the device, and it can be AirDropped to their teacher's iPad if absolutely necessary. If you're using a generic account, is there any point in logging in to a device? Do you need to back them up? All assigned apps and profiles should redeploy when the device is reset. The only thing missing will be saved files. If you have them set up as shared iPads, then storage space will be limited - particularly on the 32GB devices. Both iCloud and OneDrive require user accounts (Apple ID or O365) No idea about that one. I've not seen that issue. We've got a Mac Mini that we used to run Profile Manager. Now it just acts as the caching server. All it does is reduce the amount of data that devices need to pull down from the Internet. E.g. When a new iOS comes out, it gets downloaded once, then pushed out internally from the caching server. I'm not sure it will do anything about the issues listed above. EDIT: In the time I took to write this (plus interruptions) there were a load more replies from people much more knowledgeable than me. Also, I forgot about SeeSaw. We use that, too.

I held back from the Dynabooks with 64GB eMMCs, last week, and I've just used up our remaining allocation by ordering 3 of the HPs as I doubt we'll be offered anything better than that.

Update: It appears that one of our email accounts had been compromised, giving scammers access to the invoice details.

Has anyone else been seriously hassled by a certain DfE recommended framework for payment? We received an invoice last Friday afternoon and already we have had four emails chasing payment, the first of which arrived the following morning. Two more arrived on Monday and Tuesday and yet another this afternoon asking us to chase the local authority to process the payment! !IMPORTANT EDIT! It looks as though someone is trying to scam us. The bursar has forwarded the emails to me and they have come from a different address (outlook.com) from the invoice. The bank details are different too. Please check any payments you have recently processed to make sure everything is correct.

I'll have to look into that. Ours is pretty much just a caching server, but I needed to use AC2 to reset an old iPad, earlier this week, and it took hours! I ended up having to leave it running overnight. Putting an SSD in should make some difference, at least.

Using READY and PIOUS (or QUOIT) will reveal any vowels used. In hard mode, you couldn't use them both if a letter featured in one of them.

Whenever. Our last collection was in July and they haven't hassled us to see if we're ready for another one. They have a van in our area every week so we just let them know when we want one. Also, there are no minimum requirements of certain types of items, nor does the bin even have to be full. We used PRM for several years and had no real issues with them, either. The reason we switched to Enviroelectronics is that we had a load of Smartboards and projectors to get rid of but not enough 'qualifying items' for a free collection. Even if we had, we would have been charged £10 per Smartboard. Enviro took the lot for nothing with the attitude of, 'Sometimes we get the paydirt; other times it's just dirt!' Having the bin to store everything in is also a massive bonus.

I recommend enviroelectronics 100%. We moved to them last year and they've been excellent. I wish we'd found them years ago! They provide a storage bin that you can fill with whatever e-waste you like (apart from fluorescent tubes). When you're ready, arrange a collection (usually within a week) and they'll leave an empty one in its place. Within a week or two, you'll get your asset list and data destruction certificates. A word of warning, though. Their old website (enviroelectronics.co.uk) comes up first in searches. Make sure you visit their new website - environmentalelectronics.co.uk - for up-to-date information.

@sefton - How did the move from SIMS to Arbor go? It's something that we're also considering. EDIT: Or, perhaps, I should ask how the move is going.

We've been allocated 3 more devices today. Dynabook laptops or Dynabook tablets with keyboards currently available. We've had Dell and HP laptops and iPads previously. I'm wondering whether to throw a Windows tablet into the mix.
