@GrumbleDook I'm worried that you are conflating "Biometric Authentication" what I was referring to and how an ipad works, with "Biometric Identification". Correct if I am wrong this is fascinating.

We're stuck on Windows 8.1 in Tech as CorelX4 is a hard no on Windows 10. Software Windows 8.1, Corel Draw X4, Boxford Design tools, 2d design, Inventor 2019, Serif X4 and Office 2013.

Just a reminder that VLANs are not a security tool, it is trivial to double wrap a packet to hop VLANs. I have a pair of very expensive Meraki APs for the 6th form, this works well as the AP NATs all of their traffic before it hits the VLAN. Meraki also have a feature that will VPN guest traffic from the AP to the firewall if you're especially security focused. I issue laptops to student teachers.

The bio-metric data stored is not a fingerprint or an encrypted fingerprint. Its a value that was derived from a fingerprint, this cannot be used to identify a person outside of its ecosystem. To oversimplify the data held is number + fingerprint = this number. You can confidently state that reversing that into identifiable data (outside of the ecosystem) or a fingerprint is impossible.

Thanks @CHiLL it was the annoying "save encrypted files to disk" option that kills PowerPoint YouTube embed! I was going over the teacher / pupil differences and that was the single change! I'd changed it a while ago to fix PowerPoint YouTube stuff for teachers!

I have only a few office GPO settings applied to my pupils but something is stopping these online features from working. I'm sure that the filtering isn't an issue for the icon import as it displays the URL in the error and the pupil can get to the icon via EDGE just fine. The "Online Pictures" (with Bing) just says an error occurred, the event log isn't tripped. Bing does get caught up by the swgfl filtering on occasion. The same PC is fine when a staff are using it but they have different filtering and USER GPOs. (so the install isn't flawed) Anyone hazard a guess as to why this is so? GPOs settings set are user customisations and first items run are disabled. That's it. it could be a non-office GPO as well. EDIT: it's not the SWGFL as it still works using pupil filtering with staff, so a GPO of some sort?

I've had this issue with PP2019 only happens when many PowerPoints are open at the same time. Closing all PowerPoints and opening just the one you are using fixes it. I've passed this onto teachers affected and haven't had many complaints but it is a rare issue.

I had some slow Lenovo laptops here, quadrupled the RAM and stuck an ok SSD in the thing. It was still terrible. I'd get something newer on the second hand market. You can get a ratty 4thgen i5 640 or 840g1 ProBook for around a £100 on eBay. Then ram and SSD upgrades are great.

I've been toying with the idea of restricting the TLD list. only allow (.com/.uk/.gov/.org.uk)

This recently happened to me, a Windows 10 update stopped the "documents" library from re-directing to the %homedrive% This was for all teachers. We hadn't spotted this issue until we upgraded a teachers laptop (win 8 to 10) and they couldn't find their files. A total loss. I found that the "grant users exclusive use" in the re-direct GPO stopped it from re-directing. I un-checked it and had it move files to the new location but that one teacher was burned. This issue must have happened weeks ago but no-one noticed.

stop using the PC now! Remove the drive & stick it into another PC then use recovery software like recuva. https://www.ccleaner.com/recuva good luck.

I think this feature is restricted to Enterprise or EDU versions of Windows though.

I'd make every computer in the school an Apple Mac, as they just work and don't get viruses.

I see that Amazon are selling the new 32gb ipad 10" for £299 I thought it'd be a nice upgrade for my ipad 3rd gen retina. The old tablet is only used to read manga (Solo Levelling is awesome) but the thought crossed my mind that I could get a larger but older ipad pro first gen 12" for £300 second hand. thoughts?

if your firewall says it's connected to the domain, then you don't need to reset the NLS. if the direct access server group policy has been altered then restoring the server will not help. (otherwise go for it) Check the GPO and see if it been recently changed. btw have you rebooted the server? mine gets funny if it boots before a DC is available.

oh, settings are assigned by group policy (even the server ones) in case you've changed OUs or GPOs recently.
