They are hugely enormous courses though, seems to me -SCORM over 100MB- you'd have to have ftp access and long time before you timed out

Can flash files and PPT files be converted in to Scorm? Why do you need to? Do they have grades in that need to be stored? If not and you just want them to show nicely you could use ispring free to convert the powerpoints to flash. Is there a program easy to use for teachers to creat quizzes in scorm format for slk? Yes - HotPotatoes . And also Contentgenerator (sorry - too tired to hyperlink tonight) - they have been made SCORM compatible though only really tested in Moodle - should work elsewhere too though.

Did you get the CLEO message regarding this? It was on their moodle - tonight between 10 and midnight they are replacing some switches (as you do) Over the past few weeks many of you have been reporting issues with moodle performance. We understand how crucial the performance of moodle is for many schools and have been working hard to get to the bottom of the problem. I'm sorry that we've been quite engrossed in finding a fix and probably not communicated the work we are doing as well as we should. I hope this post will be of some assurance to you that we are trying our best to get to the bottom of the problem. There are a large number of devices which are involved with keeping moodle running for CLEO schools, and trying to discover what is causing this issue involves painstaking trawling through logs on many devices and servers looking for a correlation between reported slowness and activity which is going on. Most of the usual indicators of problems such as high server load are not an issue. Frustratingly, the extensive amount of equipment we have in place to prevent load problems makes the issue harder to identify. At this time our best analysis on the cause of the problems are focused on problems with the internal network hardware within our server farms. This network handles communication between the various servers involved with loading your moodle site. We have made a series of changes over the past week to try and eliminate the problem, including: * Replacement of network switch hardware on tuesday * Upgrading the firmware on all our server farm switches on friday. We believe that the network switches may be reaching their capacity, our next move is likely to be an overnight replacement of all switches to higher grade replacements. It is not certain that this will fix the issue, so please continue to report issues experienced to local support desks. Getting good information of times when problems occur is invaluable to us. Dan Update - it has now been decided to replace all the switches Dan mentions, at 10pm tonight. This means that the CLEO Moodle service will be unavailable from 10pm for about 2 hours (ish) whilst this work is carried out. We hope this will fix the issues you have been experiencing but please do not hesitate to contact you LA helpdesk tomorrow if you are still experiencing problems. do you mean students adding comments? (=peer assessment>workshop) or teachers adding comments (assigments like online or advanced uploading) I'm confused now

Do you mean an extra module? The workshop module within Moodle will do that- but then you can peer assess with a forum or database or glossary too. Or do you mean something running alongside Moodle?

buy your teachers a copy of this Moodle for teachers book and they'll find it a doddle!

because if we stay with MOODLE I know that it will be down to us all in IT to administer it on a day to day basis I really think you should reconsider Moodle (but then I would say that !) All the hundreds of regular teachers in regular schools who use it can't be wrong - and as for admin, I'm an MFL teacher and have no issues administering it on a day to day basis and once the teachers have their basic training they can put stuff on it themselves. You'd have a worse job with a commercial one I assure you. But that's just my opinion.

I know quite a few schools who do this (make students teachers in a course where they can upload their own stuff) and they seem quite happy with it. You would have to decide who could see it - ie, would only the student and their teacher see it or could others access it to view it ? Would it have a life after the student left- and if so would you download all courses or keep it archived on your Moodle?

I agree that Mahara would do the job great but Mahara doesn't really run on windows though apparently. Pupils can blog on Moodle however, through their profile and can upload files to there. but the default Moodle blog isn't up to much. As a simple file uploading and sharing area you could have a look at the filemanager plugin to moodle Moodle.org: Modules and plugins

I think forum posts remain, actually. But in our case some students do coursework on Moodle and this goes if they are unenrolled as you say. (yes -it does come back if you re-enrol them ) So as you have to keep coursework for several years AFAIK for exam boards then we do not unenrol year 11s from those courses.

are they any good? The boardworks VLE SCORM compliant stuff. I mean - do they have interactive quizzes that will work in your VLE gradebook to make it worth while - or is it simply a case of the VLE records that a student has had a look at them -which isn't that big a deal? linguascope? They do a package where teachers can generate their own questions in various fun formats which then save as SCORM and can be uploaded to VLEs. Also worth checking out the content generator SCORM activities - not MFL specific but widely used by MFL teachers. Both these involve the teachers generating the materials themselves though, rather than ready made.

Yes I have bought the Moodle Admin book and would recommend it-it is a clear way of explaining how to set up Moodle. (Incidentally, once you have, you then need to buy the extremely excellent Moodle for Teaching 7-14 Year Olds for your teachers!

You should be able to hide the "all courses" link in the front page admin - go to modules>block>courses and there is an option to hide the all courses link.

yes or - you could have module=course category unit=subcategory topic =course according to how much information there is in each "topic"

Hi Russ - you obviously know your way around and I've never been to the area before so maybe you could help out here.... I'm coming by train and am booked into the On campus accommodation which I understand is the conference centre itself in Loughborough - what do I say to the taxi driver to get me to where I'm staying? Also - how do you pronounce IMAGO - I don't want to sound like a total newbie!

Did you post on moodle.org as well? Just wondered cos I answered a similar query there -students should only see their own courses when they log in not the whole list - are you sure they are not assigned globally via site admin>users>permissions>assign system roles -they should not be in there as students - also, your default user should be set to authenticated user not student. This should then restrict what they see to just their own courses. Admin see categories rather than courses because they have so many otherwise; students see courses.
