go into the course and then go to course admin>assign roles and click on student. Then select and move with the arrow the students from the right (potential ) to the left (exisiting). If your users are identified with, say, a year in our username (as ours are) that makes it easier. Alternatively you can upload a flat file with the students straight into that group but I have always found it just as quick to do it manually (ie, get our apprentice to do it manually) Then I've blocked the course off with an enrolment key - or previous poster suggests, make it unenrollable.

Go to site admin>front page>front page settings and scroll down and tick where it says include topic section.Save changes and go back to your front page and turn on editing - you will get the drop down menus for such as labels there. You don;t have to put your images in a label though -you can put them in the topic summary; it amounts to the same. (I assume you know how to insert the images and link to course categories once you've got your html editor up.)

That's what I mean- do you know of people who have the automatic assign roles element of LDAP working? I know you can assign roles via csv straight into a course but I've no experience of doing it with LDAP.

Does this actually work? I 've no experience of LDAP so I can't assist but I did do a moodle forum search and it seems lots of people have difficulties with it, especially since the creation of roles in Moodle 1.7. Do you actually know or know of people who have got this working? Presumably the users are meant to become global course creators, ie, assigned the role site wide? Whether that's a good idea or not I wouldn't say but I'd be interested to find out who has got it working.

Assuming it's backed up OK, could you not unzip offline and then ftp it up?

Hi Zak. Put a couple of suggestions on your post on moodle.org. Is it the same version you backed up from and are restoring to? Is it a really large backup? You can break the back up into little bits from Moodle 1.9.5 if that might help the restore.

Hi there (see you are not a million miles from me!) Well;there are several workarounds you could do - although I am sceptical of any way being better than parents simply emailing the school to be honest. You could give them all a Moodle account (you'd need that if you ever went down the Parent role /mentor route anyway) and then set up a course just for Parents, shut off from others with an enrolment key/ Then if you don't want a forum where parents can see each others' postings, use the journal - it is private and we use it for pastoral communication between pupils and their Heads of Year. (Or the online text assignment which is its successor) I wouldn't use the messaging in case of the risk of them communicating with others in the Moodle and in fact I would turn off all the side blocks and just have the one activity - the journal - in the course. The other way to do it - simpler I suppose - would be to create a parent login: username: Parent - password - whatever you want - and ensure they cannot change the password. Then they all use the generic log in to post a message but they need to be made aware they have to state whose parent they are. Or... you could just make an html block on the front page with a mailto: link to your school email or whoever will be taking the messages and then parents click on it to email school. To be honest I think that might be the best. If I can think of other, better ways, I will get back to you. Mary

That's what we do at our place that I suggested to Tony- only trouble is , we all have the same login and staff keep overriding each others' bookings!!

Are you saying get the one on moodle.org but use it offline then Andy? (CLEO don't allow ftp access to upload our own choice of modules)

This,I think, is where Moodle currently falls down- there is no facility for communal editing of spreadsheets and there is no way (trust me!) that you will get your staff downloading, editing and then reuploading a spreadsheet to book a room. I suggest either *ignore Moodle altogether and use the MRBS on your intranet (as we do) * set up a google spreadsheet and add them as users - this might stand a chance of being easier for them to edit. I will have a think about the Moodle database however.

You let your teachers webdav multiple files over 30 meg? Interesting. We don't as a policy allow that because I reckon if they did, they'd just upload all their folders of unedited humongous multi megabyte photos and avi videos unnecessarily instead of learning the skills to reduce them and zip them up. What sort of things do your teachers webdav? Perhaps I should think again. Oh and using IE7 by the way so cannot help with the other problem sorry

What precisely do you want to change? Do you mean the words "you're logged in as"? Forget looking in the code on your server. Go to your Moodle >site admin on the front page>language>language editing>edit words and phrases. Select the one that says moodle.php and scroll down until you find the text you want to change. While you can alter the default text within the actual php files this is a far quicker and simpler way of editing any of Moodle's language.#

Likewise you should put a full stop and then capital letter between structure mrbs requires, for more help instead of the comma. If you really really want to be perfect, you should also have a comma between service and please. You should also have comma (or colon!) between wizard and click here. I would also myself change level that you can use this wizard to level where you can use this wizard. Make sure MRBS is in capitals all the way through - it is in lower case once.

Got it. They are probably being over over cautious because perhaps some of their moodles got spammed a while ago..

Which companies? We need to know!!!! They must not -should not - be Moodle partners as you would hope they had more respect than to do that.

Do you not have a VLE? We use ours extensively for marking online.

Did you have your moodle with email-based self authentication? If so that's how they'll have got in. The later versions of Moodle -1.9 onwards -have this turned off by default - and if you absolutely DO need it then you can set certain allowed email addresses and banned ones (spammers tend to use hotmail/gmail etc) and/or captcha. But I agree with the above posters: you absolutely must upgrade - 1.7 is really old now - 1.8 is really old even! And just because you've got rid of some stuff off your front page doesn't mean there isn't stuff elsewhere on your Moodle.

I answered you on Moodle.org but am replying here too in case you look at it sooner. I know it's not the response you want but I really think it is more important you upgrade from the seriously old 1.6 and then figure out the questionnaire module afterwards (which will probably work better after an upgrade anyway) Earlier versions of Moodle have serious security holes and it's better to be safe in advance than sorry after the event. Are you absolutely sure the whole Moodle hasn't been hacked - just the files making up the older questionnaire module?
