You seem to want several things in one if I read you right - the MyMoodle option gives a student a (slightly but not much) customisable page of their work and courses that they see when they login. (Moosdle 2 will do this much better btw) Or students can be given teacher rights on their own course page for them to personalise as they see fit - some schools use this as a sort of eportfolio workaround. Parental access is an issue ibn whatever situation though - by all means investigate the Moodle parent role link highlighted above but it is very arduous to set up as it all has to be done manually. If you want to put up supplementary information for each subject for parents to see then you could edit the course category pages which should be (unless your Moodle is totally locked) visible without logging in) -ie. add information about English to the English course category page asssuming your subject depts are categories.

Si - if you use backup and restore you can specify it's a metacourse and it will restore as a metacourse - I just did it and it worked. EDIT_ ah you aren't backing up metacourses; you are wanting them to become metacourses when you restore (I just saw your question on moodle.org)

Beeswax - don't you mean it the other way round? Your course with all your Y7 in (who would be Y8 the following year) is your child course and all the year 7 or 8 courses you want your children in would be metacourses. I have mixed feelings about metacourses (aside of the fact that the terminology is extremely difficult to get your head round - although someone on moodle.org actually justified its use on a post; I can't remember how - I agree with people here - it ought to be reversed. For us in secondary the main disadvantage is that it doesn't carry groups forward with it, so if you have courses with several sets then metacourses aren't much use. We use them for staff - I have a metacourse called moodle training and a child course "staffroom" is associated to it. So everytime we have a new member of staff, they get put in the staffroom course and are automatically enrolled in the moodletraining metacourse.

I'm not sure you can in an easy to download/display report but if you go into a course and click on a user and then select overview report you can get an overview of their overall grade for all the courses they have been in.

if you set it to 1 day before each entry is chosen, and you set the entries to next, then it should immediately display whatever your first entry is (ie, for that day) and then in 24 hours' time will display the next entry which you should have set up for tomorrow etc etc

Actually quackers - you could use the random glossary block -as long as you set the entries to "Next" rather than random and then have your club dates in the right order it should work.

If you want to enrol users into a specific course with a specific role (eg, you want students to be "teachers " on one course, then add the fieldnames course1 and role1 . For the course, put the course shortname and for the role, put the shortname of the role - which is student or teacher. (in the old fashioned way -which still works , you can use the fieldname type1 for the role of that course whereby student = 1 and editing teacher =2)

I was just wondering - which LEAs used which VLEs and more particularly,Moodle? I'm sure I saw similar on here a while ago but I just can't find the thread and apologies if I didn't look hard enough - please point me in the right direction. There is this from 2006 on Moodle.org but I wondered if there are any more, or anything more up to date? So far I have got: Lancs/Cumbria Buckinghamshire Cambridgeshire Cornwall Birmingham some parts of Wales -not sure where..... and then these from 2006, though not sure where they are up to: West Sussex - Brighton & Hove - East Riding - Hartlepool - Suffolk East Sussex

Moodle.org has a demo Moodle 2 in operation -which this week will actually have courses on so you can log in as teacher/student/admin to have a play and it is at Moodle QA Testing Site Though I'd still download it myself if I were you. I keep intending to do some screencasts of "what I have learned so far" - I probably will but that annoying thing called work keeps getting in the way! uploading and displaying is much simpler in Moodle 2 but trying to locate your file after you've uploaded it if you want it somewhere else is a complete nightmare (at the moment) Si - I'll keep a look out for you;)

one of the main things that puts teachers off is the laborious way in which you have to upload your resources like your word docs/ppts. If you can turn them off that habit (which after all is poor use of Moodle anyway -just using it like a repository) and get them typing straight into moodle in a webpage or using easy to set up more interactice stuff like forums they will find it a lot more user friendly and simple to administer and you might be in with a chance. (PS SimpleSi - have we ever met? We seem to be in the same region)

Which "book"? you want this book (get it as pdf and then put it on your network) It is meant for teachers who barely know how to attach somethiing to an email. Oh-secondly- when you say "create a course" it takes seconds for you to create a course for them and then they just have to edit it to their own needs -you might find it easier for you and them if you do that, rather than giving them course creator rights.

(I did try WAP2 btw actually but still no joy) Turns out it WAS a fault somewhere with the laptop after all - took it back - their tech guy couldn't connect it totheir own wireless whatever he tried - swapped it for a different model - connected in 30 secs back home to exactly the same setup as all our other laptops - finally Thanks to everyone for your helpful suggestions

Thanks to all for your suggestions-Michael you might have a point -I recall years ago when I set this up it said it would handle 10 connections - maybe I have run out? I haven't deleted any of the older ones of laptops we no longer use - should that make a difference? I will check out the win7 laptop connection problems link thanks - it's quite demoralising really.

Hi there -I normally hang out in the Virtual Learning Environment forums but am desperately frustratedtonight I've come over here for some help -please. Son got new toshiba laptop (brand new) windows 7. Trying to connect it to our BT broadband hub - wirelessly. We've had this for several years and have had several changes of laptop xp and vista so now how to connect to the wifi -but this one just won't recognise the WEP key. It says the signal is excellent - it recognises the router by name and prompts us for the key -which we have entered correctly -but it keeps saying it won't connect. I have tried the usual switch on/off wifi/router/laptop/firewall - but as it's windows 7 which I have no experience of I wonder if there is anything else I might have missed out? Oddly enough - friend connected a win7 laptop a couple of weeks ago with no issues.
