There is plenty of documentation on making your own Moodle 2 theme to tie in with your company website - if you have people who know about CSS etc then they should be able to follow this documentation. Moodle 2.0 has plenty of attractive standard themes that you can customise within Moodle anyway. If I were you I would just download your own copy and have a play - but decide if you are going for the new 2.0 or the old 1.9

Sharepoint I don't know much about because it isn't free - Joomla is good but I have no experience of it - I believe there are some here who will have more to say about the Joomla LMS. Moodle wouldn't recommend one partner over another and I can't personally recommend a Moodle partner (as I know them all and can't have favourites!) but all the UK ones are fine - but you are not obliged to host with a Moodle partner; you could save money (thousands of pounds even) by choosing a reputable hosting company that would host Moodle for you and keep it backed up. There are options other than Moodle partners - but again, I can't make personal recommendations; it's your choice.

You can do all those things in Moodle, although be aware that seeing how long people have been on a course doesn't actually mean they did the work! (funnily enough I'm currently tech reviewing a book on using Moodle for corporate training but it won't be out until next year - would have suited your purposes perfectly ) There are two demo Moodle sites as Moodle is currently going from the very popular well established 1.9 to the updated and very new Moodle 2.0 so I don't know which one you were looking at.

Have a look in the office button>Word options>Advanced and see if you have "typing replaces selected text" ticked or not. EDIT - sorry - just noticed this is 2003 not 2007. However-if you can find the Word options in 2003, still worth trying the above.

In moodle 1.9 there isn't an option for "sitewide" groups. There are workarounds at it all depends on why you want the groups - if you want all history teachers in a group to save adding them manually to history courses then you could assign the history teachers the role of teacher in the History category -so that any history course that is made then they are automatically teachers in. If you want to enrol pupils into groups in a course without doing it manually then you can put them into groups in courses via csv file - you can also add teachers to courses via csv file as well.

No - I don't work for CLEO; I work for a CLEO school. But I can tell you that they can't implement it until the contributed modules such as HotPotatoes and Questionnaire and Book etc are upgraded to work with Moodle 2.0 Then there is the retraining involved. I wouldn't expect it until next September though I might be wrong -if it's earlier then the'll have to organise some serious retraining.

I can't help with the needing to get a description with the resource files when upgrading problem -but - when you add new stuff in Moodle 2.0 you don't HAVE to have the description. You can turn it off in site admin>plugins>activity modules>file.

Goodness that's a big question with potentially a big answer! Basically - you need to ensure you have your Moodle set to auto log in guests and then on your front page you make links to spaces elsewhere. These could be guest access courses which can serve as webpages (remove all sections except section 1 which you can't remove, so hide that with the eye) You put your content in the section 0 at the top (examples here Our Lady's Catholic High School if you look at some of the text links top or bottom) You use the main menu block on the front page - use the "compose a webpage" feature to add your content and then hide the main menu with the eye but copy the URL of your webpage and add that as a link. You can make your links in an html block to make it look like website navigation or you can use text links or even clickable icons You can get themes from Moodle.org: open-source community-based tools for learning that will give you a nicer, more website like appearance as well. It is a workaround though - but it does mean everything is in one place and you don'.t have to be an html expert to update it once it has been set up

Hi Ticker - I have a suspicion your head came to see our head the other day - we use Moodle as our website and VLE (see earlier post) Advantages - you don't need a techie to update front page. Disadvantages - Moodle being a course management system it does need a few workarounds to get it operating like a website but those workarounds work fine - plus you can get themes that improve its appearance to create the effect even more. In terms of usage -it means you have a one stop shop for news and work so everyone, pupils, staff and parents and prospective parents are focused on the one place. Our Lady's Catholic High School

You CAN see all the scores with Hot Potatoes - that's the point of using it in Moodle You need to upload the quiz (which can be in draft or htm format) to the Hotpot quiz section of the "add a an activity" drop down in a course and then the scores are automatically sent to the Moodle gradebook. If you don't have add an activity>hotpotato quiz then it needs to have its "eye" opened in site admin>modules>activities>manage activities. Oh and tricky_dicky - have you had a look at using groups in Moodle? If the classes are all doing the same then there is no need for 3 courses (or metacourses) -they can all do the same course but have their grades separated in the gradebook into their relevant groups.

There is no eye or delete button for the forum - you could remove it from the server but that would cause no end of confusion in a course. You can stop forums being created in new courses by going to site admin>security>module security and you can stop news forums appearing by default in new courses by going to site admin>courses>course default settings and setting the news items to 0. Other than that I cannot say.

The weirdest thing - I am setting up a new site and for the first couple of days I could access its URL and ftp up to it (via Filezilla) ok. Then all of a sudden a couple of days ago I couldn't get onto either anymore - thinking the hosting company's server might be down I went on that site "is it just down for me or everyone" -and it told me it was just down for me. I can't get onto the hosting company's site either - and they are (apparently) up and running. So today I turned my wifi off and plugged in my mobile broadband dongle - could access the site, ftp up to it and get to the hosting company no trouble. I really don't get this - does anyone have any suggestions? I tried turning off my Windows firewall but still can't get on. I did a forced refresh and tried in IE and FF but still no joy. I tried "yougetsignal.com" whereby you can see all the other sites on the same server as yours - and discovered that on my home broadband I can't access them either! (or at least the few I tried) What on earth has prevented them coming to my home broadband?

When you "figured out how to remove the topic outline" did you do it locally via site administration>language>language editing>edit words and phrases>moodle.php?Because if you didn't then this is probably the best place to change the wordings, and if you did- then you go to the same path but choose forum.php instead of moodle.php to alter subscribe to this forum. Howeve, after three glasses of wine that's as far as my brain is working at the moment - I am sure there is a better way to do this, as if you get rid of or change the words there they will change for everywhere on Moodle and that might be a bit too dramatic. I will have a think for a better solution.

You can do this in the html editor (the new tinymce editor) - choose a label for example - Click on the media icon and then you will get prompt "insert embedded media" and then "find or upload a sound/video or applet" and then when you click that you should get the option for youtube videos

I have no experience of this so am only hasarding a guess but could this be to do with the cron? try going in as admin and manually running the cron job http://www.yoursite.com/admin/cron.php and see if it updates it?

Hi there.Various answers according to how they login. One way is to make a course "staff" and a course "students" and password protect them both - then with a csv file, upload all your users to the appropriate course as in: username, password, firstname, lastname, email, course1 (where course1 is the shortname of the staff or student course) Then when they log in they get a link to just their course.
