Hi there. Assuming students have submitted assignments then one reason for the "Nothing to display" message is an SQL upgrade issue - what version of Moodle are you using and what mySQL? Here is a tracker report that might be of use: https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-26284

So the courses are not in Moodle then but outside? You could use a Feedback instance Feedback module - MoodleDocs

Do you mean students new to your Moodle or existing students? If you have self enrolment enabled then you can restrict the number of students who can enrol themselves to a number you specify. So first come, first served.

Moodle 2 Administration is probably still fine (for administrators) but do be aware that Moodle 2.0 E learning course development is out of date and might well confuse teachers if they see screenshots which aren't the same as what they see on their courses - no drag and drop etc etc. (There's a new one coming out at the end of the year) If you want something specifically related to just teachers and no admin in it then Moodle 2 for teaching 7-14 year olds (by Packt) is targeted at teachers of KS2 and KS3 -but again, it's based on 2.2 which is still very old (well, a couple of years old)

I agree books are old school, although I still like flicking through paper versions of things. The problem with Moodle books is there aren't any which use Moodle 2.6 (haven't checked the Illustrated guide - perhaps it does) as books are invariably always out of date. There is a free pdf book to download (and print off) which uses 2.5, not so very different, although some differences. It is based on the 2.5 documentation on Moodle.org. Schools in Lancs and Cumbria who get their Moodles via One Connect Ltd are still on 1.9. Where it isn't the LEA or SMT or external hosting that hold you back (eg with php requirement) I agree it is probably customisations done in house. Most popular Moodle add-ons have been upgraded to 2 over the last 3 years. I guess another stick to prod people with is that security support for 1.9 ends December 2013 (ie now) so you are on your own, basically.

The number of times that happens;) (You know for many themes you can disable the users' ability to dock their block so they can't make that mistake again - in Site admin>Appearance>Themes>Theme settings>Allow blocks to use the docks

Which version of Moodle and where are they clicking "My courses" Is this in the navigation block?

How about making them course creators in categories instead of site wide? They would presumably only be creating courses in their own departments anyway, which I'd expect would be one category? Just a thought.

Front page settings should not appear for a teacher by default as they cannot edit the front page. All they should have is the navigation block and in the Settings/Administration block (name depends on your version of Moodle) their own profile settings. What are they seeing extra? If you are sure you haven't tweaked the teacher role elsewhere then you could go to Site admin>users>permissions>define roles>teacher and then reset the role back to its default. And check in Assign system roles that teachers aren't listed there (which they shouldn't be)

The official companies are Moodle partners Partners | Moodle.com, of which there are five in the UK, WebAnywhere being the nearest to you in Yorkshire . Plus there are other non-official companies who do a good job as I am sure others will suggest.

If you want your student data (ie assignments, forum posts etc) then you do need to go via One Connect. If you just want the course content then you don't need One Connect; you could backup and then restore the courses to an empty 1.9.18 - although obviously that is very old and not on the normal downloads page of Moodle - but if you change the URL of the 1.9.19 download you will get it. Or just use 1.9.19 - it will be ok.) I can't answer for the MIS upload as my former school (Our Lady's Preston) didn't use it but I presume you are aware there are other non-standard modules which will need to be added as well. We/they actually set up a blank Moodle 2 and restored the courses into there (that works without data) and got from One Connect the whole old Moodle to be used locally for the duration of Year 11s time in school, with the aim of everyone being moved over to the new Moodle 2 by September just gone. On the other hand, as mentioned above, you can get a Moodle partner (such as Remote Learner) to do the hard work for you, but I wouldn't imagine they will want to give you a Moodle 1.9 without pressing you to upgrade to 2

Good! - It will be good to know on Monday if it does work for future reference advising people - as this issue (with non-standard question types not being upgraded corrupting the questions page) seems to have come up before.

You haven't done anything different - I suspect you couldn't do what you expected beforehand. A teacher can only post user events on the front page and can only post course events from the course he or she is in. You as admin can post user or site events on the front page.

Assuming you have access to your Moodle on the server? Go to your Moodle folder and find the "question" folder. In there look for the "type" directory and delete the two that say "gapselect" and "ddimagortext" Then go in to your Moodle as admin and click on Site administration>Noficiations to see if it recognises the plugins have gone -then go back to the Manage question page and if they are there, delete them

Ok well that solves it I think - it's looking for non-standard question types - gapselect and ddimageortext from the OU. You need to go in and get rid of their traces or I guess maybe add them and try again

Try again with looking at the Manage questions page in Moodle. From Site administration>Development>debugging, set it to "developer" and then make sure you have ticked "Display debug messages" Then when you try to open the Manage questions page it should display some code you can copy and paste
