Not sure what you mean by documentation but you could use a Page resource instead of uploading documents - that is viewed online - but of course people can still screenshot them. There is also the Book resource which is a series of pages, although it can be saved as a PDF.

Well that's a good question:) I don't have an answer, though but you have got my brain working. When I was in school we used to have Performance management meetings face to face but the finalised agreed targets and achievements were typed up and put into the private staff course on Moodle-but that's hardly "doing performance management on Moodle". I also remember using Mahara for this purpose and it worked very well - but this is about Moodle, not Mahara. I think this is something that will lend itself to the competencies/skills feature which has been added to the latest version of Moodle, Moodle 3.1 I made a demo course to demonstrate it with staff induction, and I reckon you could do something similar with performance management. You'd just need (a) the latest version of Moodle and (b) the time to design and implement the competency framework:)

I like it:) Installed no probs on 3.2 dev (only site I have where I can install plugins currently) and very easy to operate. I'll add a review to the Plugins directory once it has been approved, which hopefully might be soon now. I think teachers will find it easy and will therefore be motivated to use it. I like the fancy graph things. A bit annoying when you click on something good only to discover you have to pay for an upgrade -but hey - that's how you feed your families and that's fair enough. The free version does plenty anyway. Grading is very basic (like the quick grading) and so none of the unoconv stuff in 3.1 or pdf annotation but then, for many teachers, that is all they need anyway - place to see the work, give feedback and grade. And I like how students can see what they need to do in different courses too. The one thing I missed or else I couldnt work out how to do it - was that if you go to a course where you already have lots of assignments, you have to make new assignments within the block; you can't somehow attach existing Moodle assignments into the homework block. And yet it looks to be the assignment code you are using, or some of it anyway?

This looks great - I am going to download it and try it out now. Hopefully it will soon also be available in the Moodle Plugins directory on Moodle.org

If you are still using 1.9 then you won't see that link because afaik that is a Moodle 2 + link. The link for the html editor in Moodle 1.9 is Administration > Appearance > HTML Editor Unfortunately I don't have a 1.9 Moodle to double check. However, it might be that your browser doesn't display the html editor - there were issues with Chrome and Safari not displaying the html editor in Moodle 1.9. Hi there! Me again (I just manifest anytime the word "Moodle" appears online ) I do suspect the course images were uploaded into the course and would never have displayed for guests previously, unless guest access was available or there was some caching issue. The simplest solution for now is to add them to the site files. When you upgrade to 3.0 or later (3.1 will be LTS) then each course now has a space for a course image so if you add them into the course description on a modern Moodle, you won't have this problem.

And this is on the understanding they are in-house DVDs that you have permission to adapt, and not bought ones?

In what way did it not work when you tried the default dashboard page? Did it not let you drag an HTML block into the centre of the default dashboard page? If not, then I would raise the issue with the theme maintainer over on Moodle.org because I would imagine Essential (which I haven't used) would allow you to drag blocks into the centre of the page in the same way that other themes do. I would imagine you can't add the block to the centre of the front page (which is where you seem to be with your screenshot ) because maybe Essential doesn't allow for that underneath the course list?

What version of Moodle?Is this for your own dashboard or the default dashboard for everyone? Which themes is that?

By navigation buttons, do you mean icons to click to go to the different areas or do you mean replacing text links by buttons in the actual navigation block? I can't help with the second but here is a suggestion for the first: 1. Make your buttons 2. Get the URLs of presumably the course categories for Maths. English , Science etc and kjeep them safe somewhere to paste later, 3. As admin turn on the editing on the front page 4. From the link "add an activity or resource" add a label 5. This will present you with a text box. Insert the images via the insert image button. Then highlight each one and click the link/chain icon and then paste in the URL of the appropriate course category. There are other ways - if you meant to do it in the techie way, I apologise:( I only know the non-techie ways. Also some things will depend on your Moodle version and the type of editor you are using (there are several depending on your version).

Can you upload files in other places as normal?

It depends on what "old" is in terms of the "old Moodle VLE" you inherited is. If it is 1.9 (before 2010) then you will be able to find the folders on the server. If it is less than five years old then it's not as straightforward. If all they have is files such as Word docs in the courses you could maybe try something like Download them all

What is your maximum upload size? Site administration > Security > Site policies ?

mrverrall -do feel free to log in and update those docs - if you do the 2.8 one I'll do the 2.9 one - I'm not confident enough about what you are talking about to do it myself but I'll copy and paste what you say:)

I'd use a forum too but I would use the "each person posts one discussion" type of forum. That means that -er - every student can start one new discussion thread (and only one)where they attach their work with any comments about it, and others in the class can only reply with their own comments. If you tell them to start their discussion with their own name you will get an easy to view class list of (say 30)students' names with discussion threads only on their work.

Speaking from a personal level, although many people use Moodle on Windows successfully, if you are going to go down the Windows route, I would advise making sure you know who those people are in case you need any support later on. There are far fewer people using Windows on the Moodle forums https://moodle.org/course/ and often when there is a problem specific to Windows, especially performance-wise where most of the issues are, help isn't as immediate as for Linux as Windows Moodlers are a much smaller group.

If your students are getting the message "you cannot enrol yourself in this course"then check you have self enrolment enabled site wide and in each course - see https://docs.moodle.org/28/en/Self_enrolment 2. Or you else look at https://docs.moodle.org/en/Course_completion Set the course to be marked compelet when all the quizzes have been done and then set the certificate to be awarded once the course is complete.
