look for the moodledata folder(sometimes called uploaddata) In it should be numbered folders correspoiding to your courses -directory one is the site files -each course has its own numbered folder so if you look at the properties of a resource in the course files of the course where you want it you will see the number of the folder into which to put your stuff.

do you actually use the email addresses? for forum subscriptions etc? If you don't , then just use fake emails and set them to disabled.

well - two suggestions: there is a book you can get online (it's work in progress but lot of it complete) here moodle development : Moodle 1.9 Extension Development [RAW] or else there is a moodle developer's course you can sign up to Moodle Developer Courses Oh - and - just out of nosiness -what module is it you are looking to build that Moodle doesn't already have? Would you be willing to share in the moodle plugins database?

why can you not just ftp the folder into the relevant moodle directory rather than thinking in terms of webdav?

No I don't (sorry if you expected a positive response) We use Moodle not Fronter but the issue is the same - if pupils upload Word docs you have to download, comment and reupload just as you say you do in Fronter and it is a pain. Do you have a facility in Froner whereby they can just type straight into the VLE and you can correct on top of their text - like there is in Moodle - I find that's the simplest way round it. Other than that , google docs is the only way I could see how people could do this. That online editing and collaborating is something I have wanted for a while. On the other hand, maybe somone will come along from Fronter saying you can do that in Fronter - I hope so for your sake.

I have got some (in my personal capacity) you are welcome to have YouTube - UsingMoodle's Channelthough they are mainly either motivational or more advanced. For simple tutorials - Tomaz Lasic in OZ has done some 2 minute moodles here 2 Minute Moodles on Vimeo that are really basic and clear.

I agree- Ithink you need to cater for different learning styles here by offering printable sheets but also short screencasts - I don't have permission to give you our stuff I am sorry but I have made a course with pdfs they can download and embeddeed wmv screencasts they can watch -to suit all tastes. You absolutely have to start with the lowest common denomiator and assume nothing,

Is there not a suitable template you could get from moodle.org themes that might offer you suitable navigation buttons? Is flash essential? Which bit of your front page do you want them for- the courses? (edit: your Moodle looks fine as it is ) Maybe you might want to look for a different type of navigation side block instead?

I must admit I haven't given thought to extending the functionality of the forum - I can only see the "forum post approval" patch in Moodle - I haven't seen any others unless you can point me in that direction?

No I don't think so - not via that route -but you could split the bit you wanted and then import only the forum into another course using the import facility in course admin

First - ignore the so -called "survey "in Moodle -it just has standard questions and doesn't allow you to edit them at all. I've disabled ours to avoid confusion. YOu need to download and then install the non-standard questionnaire module which will do all you want. We use it a lot for suchlike. YOu can then download the answers tothe survey in text format to import into Excel and manipulate how you like -simple. (edit: there is a shorter, less powerful, Feedback module, which you might like to look at too -also non-standard - but I'd go for the questionnaire for what you want to do)

Have you looked at all the free templates on moodle.org?

Go to site admin>appearance>course managers and take out the ticks of teachers - they won't then appear on the descriptions. (I think that's what you meant)

Yes - look top right and you should have a box saying "move this discussion to" and it will offer you the different available forums to move it to.

I see what you mean On the other hand though -is it essential you have so many course creators? It takes less than a minute for someone to create a course and put a teacher in it - might it not be more manageable to assign a course creator per subject and then they just make the course a teacher wants, puts them in and leaves them to it? If all teachers were course creators you'd run the risk of your Moodle being populated with a load of unnecessary courses and no real structure within the departments?

Goodness me - big questions-where to start? I could write a book on it all (oh yeah - forgot - I did) is there a link in to sims? if yes does it allow reading / writing to/from sims? well not built in, no, but there are ways out there to link from SIMS to varying degrees according to what you are after - and info on these forums here if you do a search (easier and more info than on moodle.org) what good points are there about moodle it is Open source and therefore highly customisable - it was designed for teachers by people with an educational, not a commercial background and therefore lends itself better to school use - it has a huge online community (nay, evangelical following) so you are always likely to get free help. what bad point are there with moodle? Although it is "free" to install, you do need someone who knows what they are doing so you don't make errors in security, user permissions etc. It isn't difficult to be an admin of Moodle but you do need to do it right Some people say the themes are not particularly attractive contrasted with the fancy commercial VLEs - though I would say there are plenty of themes around to choose from if you don't like the defaults. It doesn't automatically provide a personal e-portfolio for pupils or easy parental access or reporting or any of those other government targets we are meant to meet - but it does provide for workarounds to achieve them. is there an online area for kids yes - you can set one up in a variety of ways according to what space you want them to have. thanks you're welcome.

Just make them a course creator in their category - they don't need to be course creators sitewide anyway- I mean, usually, if you are a French teacher you aren't going to need to create courses in Maths so you don't need to be assigned globally as a course creator.

You mean you want a game that students can play and Moodle will record the scores? You would have to input your own questions though presumably and make them hard? If you make a Moodle quiz then you can use the quiz results block to show the leader board -that is very motivating. You could jazz it up a bit by embedding video or audio in the quiz rather than just questions. - or there are SCORM compliant games children love (depends on the age of your students) on the Content Generator site -advantage being that the individual scores are recorded in the gradebook - though you'd have manually to display the leaders.Then there is the [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kAksDByR20]YouTube - Moodle game module[/ame] but this depends on questions inputted into eg quiz or glossary which you'd have to have made before. I don;t know of anything that is dead easy for you just to put up however, unless you have a competion where they have to do the work and it is manually judged.We had one for example where they had to design a banner for the courses of a couple of departments. Then you just use an assignment as your competition area.

Should do. Once you have enrolled those students into it then if you make it unenrollable then other students won't be able to enrol.
