I think it should be "connections" because that's what Moodle's all about -connections

dead easy though; click of a button - then you have a 'communal' course where you can add news and communal resources etc.

could you not do a workaround and have a course 'ICT news' - using the metacourse method to get everyone in the other ICT courses automatically enrolled on it -then you could post news etc to that for everyone to access? I take your point about a first port of call/departmental web page though.

I've done a lot of this sort of stuff too for Moodle, some of which I've put on youtube but most of which (because it's part of our external training programme) I'm not allowed to share -but I can make some suggestions from experience of using it with people: screencasts are very good and welcome but they need to be very short and to the point - with labels pointing where the mouse is (Captivate's good for that or Wink) However there is a group of teachers (myself included actually!) who prefer a sheet of paper in front of them with step by step instructions -with screenshots. If you're doing it for staff aside of your degree, you need to offer them both possiblities. And you need to start from the absolute beginning, assuming nothing And you don't need to show every single possibility - a lot of the stuff in the settings can initially safely be ignored and would put off a beginner (Oh and a personal bugbear of mine - show them to create folders within the courses before you show them how to upload!) I think you should consider dhick's suggestion to put them on Open Source Schools

if it were me I'd just bung them all onto a csv file and upload and enrol them straight into the 14-19 course and then shut them out of any other courses.

If users are already enrolled on a course then adding an enrolment key for new users will not block out those that are already in it.

agree with Geoff about metacourses but also agree with gaz35o about setting up groups - much easier then to filter the gradebook so teachers only have to deal with their own class. As for all having the same deadlines, you could switch off the deadlines such that it's always available -or alternatively , make different assignments for each set. No over impressed by the LEA's advice I must say, although it would work.

re q2: does not import it as SCORM and does not correctly deal with the score - thus cannot be used for assessment (unlike SCORM quizes or moodle quiz) You can import as SCORM if you want but there's no need since they'll work in Moodle's gradebook if you import via HotPotatoes module - not sure how you feel they don't correctly deal with the score. They're easier to 'cheat' with and for that reason not as suitable for assessment as the Moodle quiz, but excellent for quick and easily self-marked homeworks with results stored in Moodle.

I've never downloaded this but usually when you install a new plugin you have to click on Notifications in site admin - it scrolls through a load of checks, tells you all is well (if it is) and then it will appear. Did you do that?

Are you a student of ICT or an ICT related subject and therefore have to learn the skill of actually setting up a VLE to aid teaching? I am only asking because if you're not, and you are a teaching student and merely need to have a VLE - well, Moodle - to adapt to aid teaching you can get a free Moodle site set up that you can administer and populate yourself from ninehub. Depends if it's the technology or the pedagogy you're after

mm-I see where your coming from but then we've got the problem of pupils typing in the right enrollment key which would have to be simple to make it easy but might let them enroll in wrong courses - but I'll give it a go ta You're primary aren't you? I guess I am thinking more in terms of our secondary pupils when we have several classes attached to one course (like all y7 history for example) So we give each class its own enrolment key (its class name so there's less chance they get it wrong) and then they are automatically enrolled onto that course in the correct set. Saves the teachers having manually to enrol them into their course.

Excellent that you have a 5th school trying out Moodle - the more the merrier CLEO are on 1.9.3 so I believe. If you want teachers to have an easier time selecting pupils on their courses you could show them how to do a group enrolment key , then let the pupils do all the work for them instead.

how about adding the questionnaire module - not only does it provide a good way to have pupil reviews/teacher evaluations, you can also set it up as your leave of absence form to send an email to relevant person whenever it's filled in.

just couldn't figure out where to set the permissions to allow a certain user to upload to that directory and that directory only. agree with above posts but...afaik all users who are editing teachers can upload to any directory within the course files and I don't believe there's a permission to alter it so they can only upload to one specific folder in the course files (if that's what you meant) -and it really isn't worth getting into permissions at this stage anyway.

. Now a part of the announcements has an area where SMT can upload files (i.e. briefing minutes) but only staff can view (not upload) Additionally to the above if you want SMT to upload stuff they need to be put on as teachers in that area/course. And the other staff will stay in the default role.
