what do you exactly mean by this? you have a switch connected to one side of the router for the internal network correct? and somethign on the outside being th internet? and vlan1 can be used just fine. to actualy connect the router to the internet your going to need to either have a public IP for each client PC or be running NAT. We jumped from our RBC in 2009 after becomming an Academy, for us it was simple as we had never relied on the RBC for any service other than piping packets to our site. We ran/run our own firewall, filtering, Email, DNS, etc. So we just changed our DNS modded some server IP's and chucked the RBC router in a box till they bothered to recover it. Rob

Unless something massive has changed then no. we were on a hosted VLE providers Live@ and could see the addresses of every other user in every other school! We set up our own live@ for testing and could not segregate staff & students. We left students on Live, and setup exchange for staff. Even on exchange it seems virtually impossible to hide one set of users from another. I broke exchange lots and lots with adsiedit trying to disable address lists. Novell Groupwise was able to do it without any problems, shame we were forced to move off it. Rob

We always fully wiped HDD's including the utility partition so doubt I have actualy virtualised one. Windows "should" be able to re-write it's boot loader without the dell stuff. I probably knew how once.... Rob

USB storage, and he uses it as a media server so it's capable of streaming HD. Not BALLS out performance but for £30 + a £50 1TB HDD it's a very low cost low power solution. Rob

No need to push G711 (87Kb) over wan links, G729 will do fine at (41Kb). I can't tell the difference when calling between sites. Not that we need to save bandwidth on a 1Gb Pipe . Rob

if there is only one server and a few clients then just use one subnet and vlan. Rob

HA..... We had a full new install with cisco kit at our other site, twin 4507 cores and distribution and edge switches. It took 5 months to get the UN/PW out of the BIG installer. The day I got the details I swore so much the air turned blue. Our expensive network was using switches daisy chained 7 levels deep and with no redundancy. It took three months for them to agree that it was abysmal and come in and do it properly. Rob
