Our first switch we had made by planet (going back probably 10 years), Randomly started locking up it's uplinks to our remote buildings.. And about 2 years ago we had an 18 Month old Cisco 3560-24POE kept randomly locking up, a fair amount of time was spent on that including an IOS update and eventualy managing to rais a TAC with cisco via the reseller and get it replaced. It's little known but cisco fixed configuration switches do come with a limited lifetime warranty. Rob

If you can find a small budget to at least upgrade to a smart switch for the servers that will start to show some diagnostic benefit. Good second hand switches are on ebay all the time too , you can get a lot of specification for a little bit of money and if it saves half a days lost teaching then it is money well spent. Rob

Well next time it happens run round every switch and see if one is going balistic... If that shows no obvious sign of issue then I would be disconnecting everything from the switch your servers connect to appar from the servers, if pings are not restored then you either have a faulty switch or a conflict. Rob

Were any of the switches showing broadcast storms? Do you have STP? and do you have BPDU guarding? It's possible somone created a loop, filled the network with a broadcast storm and then removed the link. Do your switches have history loggs? Rob

Bizarrely.. I visited a client last Tuesday who's office is his server room and it being a warm day we commented on the lovely coolness, I said it's gr8 until it goes off and you can hear the servers from the front door. "It's never been off in 7 years" He said. We finished our tests, finished our coffee and said farewell. Wednseday morning we were called to fix a network fault, when we arrived his office was like a sauna and very noisy!! Quite by 100% Chance the A/C failed over night and when he went in the front door of the office the noise allerted him to the fault. Needless to say we denied all knowledge of being bringers of BAD LUCK. We sorted "OUR" problem in the rather uneasy heat, and worked round a confused A/C engineer. We returned today to finalize our works, the room was cool again. The fault had been a ceiling cassette in an office on the far side of the building that was leaking gas!! Rob

we run about 19/20ish Stupidly our M&E company installed an air extract in the room too so our cool air is being sucked out.. We need to rectify that ( Gaffa Tape) Rob

You need to determine what you need, then look at the options. You need to consider the management/logging as well as speed. And do you want vlans? Routing? Resiliance ( STP ) etc. Plan for the future and try and have same brand across the board as this will help interoperability. And consider your topology as you may want to look at devices for Core, Distro and Edge. Rob

entirely depends on what the devices are, what they are doing, how good the switch is at processing the packets and pushing them out, the port speed, the client lan adapter, how much broadcast traffic goes on, etc.... Our main client vlan has ~600 devices on it, but not concurrent and 80% are thin clients simply. Rob

Can you ping it from the network? Rob

Also, is it on the same type of cable? and is there any bios setting for graphics ram? it may not have enough for the specified display. Rob

Plug a laptop into the outlet for the printer and see if it can ping back to the server. Then trace the network Hopps backward. Rob

It can't be relied upon as a core learning aid as the abilities of the devices are mostly limited by their size and performance. If we were to ever allow them to connect to our network it would be through a Citrix session which would get them to their usual desktop. The difficulties caused , IMO far outweigh any benefit at this present time. Rob

Two Cisco 4507RE's on our site and the same on the sister site with a 1Gb 5Mile fiber. Despite beeing R's they only have one supervisor card ( I spent a number of e-mails arguing with the installers over this waste of money when they could have put in a 4506) Apart from when we first got the first one 4 years ago ( when 2 PSU's blew in 4 months ) they have been rock solid. Out of interest, could the servers talk to each other? DC's don't like extended periods when they can't talk to each other. Rob

Never really heard mention of them on here, we have one sitting in our second cabinet room that we pulled out of our sister school last year (they go through our Websense now). I know naff all about it other than it was darn noisy when we had it over here during their temporary relocation. And it did not seem to work so it was bypassed. Rob

As a jolly aside... When I was in my last year at Secondary school we got a second hand RM186 network, think it was 20 stations. That took 45 minuets to boot and have Cascaid loaded on all the machines. not good for job matching . Was almost quicker to fill in the form and send it in the post to Cascaid... Does that even still exist??? Rob

Hopefully the controller will also be controlling overlapping channels and power levels, and the wifi will be installed so that an area that expects high utilisation spreads it over more than one AP. 60 Laptops on one AP is going to cause a lot of traffic that does not even contain much useful data.
