Why is ethD plugged in? It will act as the DG for Vlan220 which according to Smothwall is the cause of your issue. Alternativly in the DHCP for the zone set the D-Link vlan 220 IP as the DG. TT

99% of the time fine, the journaling file systems recover much better than the old EXT2 system. and I would say vastly better recovery than windows which 25% of the time wants to repair. TT

what are your network ranges? what are the DG's on each network? what routes have you put in the Smoothwall? do you have a central L3 switch for the vlans? is the network to the smoothwall untagged on the server vlan? TT

I know it's going off topic slightly but running cost of home labs should be a big consideration. I am upgrading to a 10,000L Pond pump in spring, the total running cost for 24/7/365 with ( with 2 auxilliar pumps and led lamps) will rise to £120 for the year and the new pump is not an eco. The home lab PC uses ~£50 a year. I can well imagine your DLxxx is eating £500 a year whilst the micro only £50 . But a power meter ( £5 ) off ebay could help work it ot for sure. TT

They are all relatively keen to keep their share of the market, as the virtual platforms have no hardware cost an upgrade to that is relatively free for them ( you would need hyper-V or Vmware) My last place had a MC1500 and AP320's installed winter 2k10 ( Dumping a Cisco system that was only 2.5 years old when we moved buildings). The Meru was replaced this summer with Xirrus. I use Meraki and am fairly happy with it, as the licences are transferable and Co-Termed it's easy to manage and devices can be added or replaced easily. If you plan to stick with them then the licence cost comes way down and you just worry about hardware refreshing. Many swear by UniFi and it's a good budget option. For home I am looking at Edimax CAP1200 which can also be managed similar to the UniFi but come in much cheaper. As I say the HARD controller has had it's day, I was sceptical 3 years ago when we started to look at replacing the MC1500, but things do move on. If there is no ISSUE with the current platform, use it for as long as it works effectively. TT

It went End of sale April 2013, EOL April 2016. If it was on a support contract Meru/Fortinet/reseller would probably have offered a reasonable upgrade path on the controller probably to a virtual platform. 4-5 years is actually a reasonable life span on a Wireless Controller, physical ones are rapidly disappearing altogether. You may still get a trade in or discount on a new controller if you say your going to Xirruss/Rukus/Meraki TT

We have a present generation Sophos web Filter appliance, it just about does the job of filtering. But Grouping users is clunky, Analytics are abysmal Forensics are Abysmal Many other restrictions and we trust our users!! I have a Sophos UTM9 at home and the performance is staggeringly bad some times. The solutions I read are "Turn off web filtering" Ace! Bloxx I have heard is just a misspelling of the real name. SmoothWall - Various poor reports. Websense I had good times and bad times with. DansGuardian is Free and works OK, although you have to be good with linux. TT

I have 2x Quad Xeon Dell R810's in our office test cluster that will probably be decommissioned to be replaced by some ex-frontline 380G8's... But despite being tempting the power use and noise just puts me off. . I recon the power cost could easily out way the cost of an efficient system like a Microserver. At the end of the day for me, I don't stretch my old DG45 desktop to actually warrant anything more. TT

As mentioned earlier , humidity is also a concern, if it gets to dry then you can get static build up. We monitor Temperature ( rack in, rack out) Humidity AC HZ UPS Load ( we have some client sockets on the UPS, we recently saw a 10KVA increase in draw on these, I knew exactly the cause) Floor level moisture. And some other stuff. Cooling is all N+1, at one point we were loosing one out of our 4 coolers and could still achieve +1. I think we have actually reduced our thermal load since then too. I remember at my old job, we converted an old store room to be the Server room. But after growing from 5-6 Servers to 10+ it was overheating. We installed our own A/C , but the "KIT" had restricted length pipework and the Condenser unit had to be situated in another store room. It worked well enough even in the middle of summer, until the Head complained his office floor was red hot . New Pro AC ordered TT

Yes, Fact is they went from a fuel injected 2.5L straight six in the TR6, to a twin carb 2.0 4 pot on the 7. Always should have been the 3.5 V8, but American legislation made it uneconomical to do until too late. There were a few 16v "Sprint" cars which were better, but not made in any number to be recognised.

Give it a static in the range and see if it can ping something. Try deleting and re-creating the wireless network on the machine. Check the DHCP loggs. TT

We used standard LG 48" Consumer LED's when we did our install. They were on for 12hrs a day 5 days a week, they were still going strong after 4years when I left. Price wise you could loose one or two and replace based on the cost savings. TT
