We are just on MCB's for the server room to avoid issues with RCD losses. In our old building we had a room on RCD's that tripped every morning until we had the RCD's replaced with less sensetive ones. Rob

You do have to remember though, that the max rated Wattage on the device is not what is consumed ( except in a device like a kettle ).. To further my frustration with out installers, on another occasion. I had to argue with them that a pair of supplies in a server active/redundant do not take twice the power of one. even if they were active/active the power consumption would be spread ( with an overhead for the losses in the PSU itself.) Our "professionaly" installed UPS/Server solution had one load-site loaded to the extent that if there was a marginal extra draw on that load then the output circuit breaker tripped. That in turn caused the supply circuit breaker to trip. We resolved that one, only took a moments thought. Our other "professional" install .. we asked them to put in a second UPS and said it would need a new feed as there were none spare. 32A please.... a few weeks passed and I got a call from my colleauge Colleauge := "They say there is a spare 16A feed in the roofspace already!" Me:= "Laughs... No it needs a 32A , it's an 8KVA UPS." Co:= "They say it's fine" Me:= "on what assumption?" Co:= "The other UPS is already on a 16A feed" Me:= -Spits Coffee across office- "£$%£$^, 16A $%£$%£$ 32A !$$!£!"£$" "Hold on...." Me:= "Ask them to check the incommer rating plate on the back of the ups" Co:= "They are ordering 2x 32A now." Me:= "Oh good" 2 days later the 16A supply to UPS1 tripped, and 2 weeks later. Rob

Yeah it realy does depend, but we have a DB with 130A incommer and about 5 circuits of that from memory. It feed nothing else and goes back to the localised sub board before going back to the main switch room. Rob

can any machine ping any other device? is it just the smoothwall? If so, it sounds like the smoothie has an IP conflict of it's own. Rob

Will give it a try on our XenDesktop when I am back in the office on thursday. It has some bearing on interoperability between XD virtual machines, physical locations and useage of remote support/management systems. Rob

We used to have a 2 custom linux box on SLES . But for the rebuild and move from Groupwise to Exchange we went with a install of ClearOS 5.x Very easy to use, runs on a light Virtual machine. Rob

4 was a big step on from 3.5 , if it's working and vmotion is doing it's job then the only reason I can think for upgrading is to stay in the supported product range and remain eligible for upgrades. ESXi is a stand alone product. Rob

All the active cabinets should already be fan cooled. My bigest speed enhancement was moving from an Ancient DABS Value Connexiant router to a Cisco 877W which is very good but not cheap. Rob

Well, our servers are on site. So a script each night just TGZ's the files and the database dump and copies them over to a NAS in another building. So in our case size/speed is not a constraint. There has been mootings of moving it out of house though. I could probably still SCP it over during the night to our own servers though if that does happen. Rob

I got one of the OpenReach versions of the BT iPlate a couple of years ago when an Engineer had to come out and reterminate the pole. The retermination and Plate helped up my connection by about 1Mb. Rob

If green box equipment is blowing due to heat then something is very wrong with the equipment or the cabinet ventilation. Rob

well it's either cheap lead + Vag-Com basic.. Or a Ross-Tec one. Or at least that is how I read it.. I have one of the £8 Blue leads from Ebay for My Galaxy which reads the non engine stuff. Not tried modifying any params although I would like total closure on the remote. I have to use a USB Elm lead and Torque or an Old lead to read the Ford engine ECU. TT

Check the BIOS, there is often an option to disable the wifi when a CAT5 connection is present. Can't remember the common name for it though. Rob
