  1. I have worked through two rebuilds £50M & £30M .. At that point the I.T. Contractor was appointed separately. The only I.T. Related work done by the main contractor was the structured cabling ( and yes there were elements of that which went wrong) .. In our case we were cut out of the latter stages of both of the I.T. procurements by a member of SLT, that lead to problems later down the line that we had to battle and work against. TT
  2. I can see this going one way. Starts with B and ends with adly. Sounds like a loosely defined project, a 3rd party that will sell you not a lot but charge a fortune for doing the least they can, and a high likley hood that the project is just been barrelled through. Connecting the two sites could be done with a p2p vpn. but you have to have decent bandwidth, and then you also introduce a whole heap of horrors in the security and safety of your own infrastructure. TT
  3. Try without the VLAN tag. I have seen a VDSL services that don't seem to want it.
  4. Plug PC directly into NAS. Check speed. Unplug Switch from everything but PC/NAS . Check speed. TT
  5. got my free switch last month. Not actualy plugged it in yet as will have to plan through change control. TT
  6. If you have not had brake work done then it's probably not the issue. Usually lazy fitting of replacement parts leads to subsequent damage.
  7. I would never use KF.. I doubt you would find many people on the car forums (enthusiasts) that would recommend them either. Wheel wobble can be caused by worn bushes, worn tyres, worn dampers, worn track rods, worn bearings, binding brakes, etc.... Bit of a mine field to correct and one a local independent garage may be able to do better. TT
  8. We told staff that any laptops left lying around, staff or student would be removed. The building was very open plan with self service lockers. If a member of staff could not find their laptop they were to report it lost to the deputy head. She would check with us and if we had it the staff member could claim it. Key point was to set the rule with SLT at the start. SLT were not immune from the system either. Still had laptops disappear occasionally though. 1st was within 2 days of issue. And one department bleated for 3 yrs for a set of laptops. 6 weeks after getting some we found them strewn round the department (not in the trolley) , flat batteries, keys ripped off, screens damaged. We took the damaged ones away and it took 3 weeks for them to notice.
  9. Had some real buggy firmware on a HP 2910AL. despite what was listed on the port configuration the unit only operated in one mode. had a 6 week argument with HP, even the loan switch on the same firmware exhibited the same bug yet they could not replicate in the lab. Update of F/w fixed it. TT
  10. Ok what your describing is quite normal. You initiate a connection to a port, the service responds on any port. In the olden days this really was a big problem. Modern ( like 15++++ years firewalls ) have statefull inspection. So if you make a connection to a service on 3389 the responding traffic is allowed through whatever the port it comes from. You need to look at the firewall for options to enable stateful inspection. TT
  11. If its similar to UTM9 free then you should have no issues. TT
  12. Our first MC3200 was very flakey, turned out to be faulty. TT
  13. You need to forget about the random port, it's the source port and you should avoid source port blocking. Try the destination server by IP rather than hostname with the rule in. If it works then DNS is being blocked so try adding a rule for Dest Port 53 Allowed. TT
  14. Where do the clients get DNS? TT
  15. having said that, I would never allow RDP traffic in or out over an untrusted network.
  16. So on the firewall, you allow 3389 from your network to anywhere. then block everything else. Totally normal, you should never have a firewall to the internet that allows unrestricted access from clients. rule1 Src = IP subnet of network dest = any IP Service = 3389 action = allow rule 2 src = IP Subnet of network Dest = Any IP service = all action deny.
  17. I thought this was going to be about mid 90's dot matrix printers
  18. What speed does it get when it is on auto?? TT
  19. sorry, lost me. please explain what you want to block/allow and from/to I have 14 firewalls and the only one we do src-port matching on is for "WMI" as MS are utter planks. TT
  20. It's highly unusual to do src-port matching on firewalls as in general these days it does not matter. Service source ports are generally random, the dst-port is what matters. Firewalls do stateful connection tracking so that any established connection allows related traffic. TT
  21. replaced all the cables ? TT
  22. A mistake can be costly in terms of time to resolve a miss-configuration. A small mistake could take lines off, take the system down, disrupt all service. And if your not experienced in trouble shooting the particular system then more damage can be done. TT
  23. Surely you have an IVR to filter the PPI's do a "Disconnect" TT
  24. Good old Netware/OES.. Still miss it and many of it's great features... 2 DC is fine. Always good to run a DCDIAG in conjunction with BPA before any DC work to resolve any underlying issues. Do you have any vlans with DHCP helpers? these will need updating. Also play close attention to TIME once you have removed the physical DC's And get the forrest and domain Functional levels to 2K8R2 if they are not already there. TT
  25. HP interface is utter crap IMO. I tell our helpdesk not to bother and just learn to use the CLI. Not used a Netgear in work for ~8 years, usualy went the D-link route but again not use one at work for ~8 years. ( do have a d-link GS108TP at home and it seems reasonable for a small switch but no CLI. If you move up the HP lines to Comware then the Web interface is useless. and the CLI is totaly different command set to Procurve ( way to go HP!) Never had an issue with CISCO other than the initial outlay. But trialling a Meraki at the moment with an Idea to deploy to our 34 remote branches. Whilst there is no CLI the cloud management would be a real asset to our helpdesk. TT
