1st thing you should do is tell SLT that staff have a duty under H&S to inspect visually their supply and it's mains cord weekly for defects and to stop using it as soon as any defect is found. Failure to do so is a breach of H&S and probably their contract of employment. 2nd expect no 1 not to happen. 3rd, as pointed out the laptop is not subject to PAT as it's a low voltage device. So it is just the PSU. (Next is a guideline if no one else has laid down the law, but it's a guide not a MUST or should) 4th. Generate a list of all the supplies, get them through your pat test and serailise them so you know what's what. Then schedule staff on a 3 month basis to bring it in for a visual inspection, and 24 monthly full test. Inform staff that they should be doing their own visual inspection, and feed back any info on obviously dangerous incidents to you H&S team. Rob

You want to be in the vsphere client, on the host under configuration, networking. You will need to add a new virtual switch connected to the NIC. Rob

SSD use in servers is not just down to the drives, Replacing SAS with SSD in your old shelf will work, have a bit of performance upgrade but is susceptible to the killing of SSD as mentioned, and the performance will not make best use of the SSD. PROPER SSD San Controllers for raid will both maximise the performance of the SSD and increase the lifespan of the drive. Hence they cost a $%^$& fortune. Rob

Exactly. In our mixed environment we have Stand alone servers VM hosts with Local Storage VM Hosts with shared storage and HA. The last one is the least worry. But they still have raid on them. Rob

I would never run a server without raid, quite simply if a disk fails then the server continues to run until the disk rebuilds into the raid or a new disk is rebuilt. Compare that to having to rebuild the server from scratch. Rob

RM acreditaion will only be worthwhile in schools, and only in the ones that use RM. So it has limited use Rob

We have meraki working now. There's a bunch of ports that need to have outbound access to the internet. Our iPads are on a wifi network locked down on the Cisco switch so that the device can get to our proxy, VDI and meraki. Spent a while trying to get it to work until I discovered the subnet(s) on the firewall did not include our newly created wifi SSID. Rob

Implemented print management and the volumes have gone up. Back when colour lasers started hitting £250 mark we kept getting asked about them by management as the cost per page was less than our inkjets. I continually advised against them as they produced higher quality results in a fraction of the time it took our inkjets. Sure enough, when we were finaly forced to get some.... People produced higher quality, faster and because it was good , quick and easy... They produced a lot more. So it cost more. same has happened with print management. They can print to a virtual queue, then go to any device and retrieve their work. They no longer have to PLAN printing, they print print print and collect it as and when they like. We are reigning it in slowley with tighter quotas and making it more difficult to get extra credit ( only SLT can aprove for students and staff). Rob

We are now virtually fully back in house. The problem with having one person is that they may not be available or have the skill, a support company will have various staff available to pick from. However your going to be paying 60/h++ Days gone by we (in our department) were jacks of all trades, now with the complexity we are specialising in areas and having to get by in the others. we are lucky. "Site a" and "site b" are connected by 5 miles of 1Gb Fibre Twice daily DPM does a dif backup "site a" to "site b's" near line storage (a HP MSA shelf) and vice versa. On Friday Site A also takes a tape backup on "site B's Autoloader" and vice versa. And the tapes are taken out weekly and put in the fire safe of the oposit site which is in a far part of the building. The only problem is remembering which management server does which backup as although it is plain and simple we still get confused! Rob

And the statement from the caretaker and op just says "electrical supply". which there is It is however unliky to find a "MAINS" supply , but with the vast array of deployments out there anything is possible. your diagram also shows a 12.11.x.x network connected to a 12.16.x.x does that fall in the same subnet? Rob

Have you got routing tables on the client devices that specify the router to use to find the other network? Rob

I would say you are very unlikely to get anyone. your offering about £2500 for someone to commit 4 hrs a week for 40 weeks a year. You may get someone who is almost in retirement, or someone fresh from training, or someone trying to keep afloat till something better comes along. And if the server crashes outside their hours? Rob
