Word of warning with Solus 3 and deploying SIMS to new workstations, if you updated to the latest windows updates on the servers over the summer, Solus 3 can't push out the updates to clients as it used SMB1 which Windows patched up =/ It's easier to copy the entire SIMS.Net folder from the Program Files (x86) Folder on an existing station onto a new one.

you need to update the proxyAddress AD field with SMTP:address@newdomain and smtp:address@olddomain if you want them to have an alias as well.

Exam board not accepting encrypted Sandisk USB stick?
Boredguy replied to Zourous's topic in General Chat
Strange, all our exam boards that needed files had an online secure site to upload them to, and the 1 set of files that had to be sent off for Drama went on a Bitlockered USB drive with no issues. In this day there should be no need to send them anything on external media -
We make sure when we get CTF's from the primary schools we don't import those details into the student record, but record them properly under the People - Contacts section

Using the built in Import from Spreadsheet routine will do you fine. The CSV file can contain as many fields as required but as a minimum for import, the file must contain: Surname and Forename; or UPN; or Admission Number Telephone Number (a column should be created for each type, e.g. home, work, mobile) Email Address (a column should be created for each type, e.g. home, work). Each data field must be created as an individual column. When creating a pupil/student's email addresses and/or telephone numbers import file, the Admission No. and UPN must be included in the spreadsheet to enable successful matching. Our admission staff know the format for all new e-mail accounts we create for students (since its including their SIMS admission number) so once the student is enrolled they update the Student's E-Mail record to have their school e-mail address as the Main Work account which Wonde and Groupcall export for the different third party services we use it with.

Migrating personal network share to OneDrive...whys and wherefores
Boredguy replied to BJG's topic in Cloud Services
We moved all staff and students home drives to One Drive back during the pandemic as it meant users could access resources anywhere at anytime without having to connect back in to school to download files via the Home Access Plus site. It's improved file availability for users as they can easily recover a file/folder they have deleted instantly. If it's an office document they have revision history and can open it via a browser on any device. Plus it saves on our onsite file storage since all users have 1TB on OneDrive. Moving was easy using the SharePoint Migration Tool (used to be Mover.io) and we've done the same now for staff and students at other schools in the Trust -
So you expect all staff to sign up to a third party system with their school e-mail account? Sorry but that does sound like doing something in Discord just for the sake of it. If your a o365 site, then Teams now has a basic Ticketing app available to it, and user accounts are all integrated so no issues about Data Sharing required due to personal information, plus there is the whole gambit of fully functional helpdesks that can integrate with O365/G-Suite for authentication. Considering it wasn't too long ago when Discord had a data leak and we had to change passwords, it's not a platform I would ever recommend any of our sites using other than in a personal setting with their own personal e-mail accounts.

Anyone using RM for broadband
Boredguy replied to robjduk's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We've been using RM for Internet access since the start of the RBC's (via SWGfL) and it's been extremely reliable and we've just moved out recent secondary school to join our MAT over to it, which has the added bonus of allowing us to have a our own VPN effectively within their infrastructure without doing anything. Safetynet might not be feature rich as some of the other filtering platforms, but you can have multiple different filtering policies applied with different criteria so for the cost does what it needs to. In the last 2 decades only had a handful of outages that might have lasted 4 hours at most in the early days, and rare these days -
Preview footage looks ok, and believe it's still the same core Codemaster team that have done it even though it's part of EA. Really should dust down my Thrustmaster T300 as it's not had much use the last few years

UPGRADE Azure AD Connect before September 2022!
Boredguy replied to psydii's topic in Cloud Services
Only annoying thing, is if doing an in-place migration from 2012 R2 to newer OS, you have to uninstall the AD Connect app then reinstall it. -
When I last ordered some drums of fibre back in 2014, I got them from Comm-Express. It was cost per metre ordered, so reasonably cost effective.

If it was just a case of starting from a fresh slate, I'm sure the team would of had a fully HTTPS site up and running years ago, however if they are trying to ensure all posts from the current system are copied over with the search engine linking not breaking and the platform of choice having updates at times after resources have been put into making it do just what as been released (based on the several threads posted over the last few years) then it's not exactly a small task. So browsers report the site as "not secure"... not a big issue for me since the logins are secure. I'm sure Dos_Box and Zerohour will post when they have something to pass on, and of course we're all free to use the site or not I guess.

You are running it as Administrator aren't you as it doesn't give the elevate privilege dialogue. As long as you have the licence file, you don't need SIMs on the station.

We don't allow our CCTV to be accessed externally due to safeguarding, as how can you be sure that someone else who isn't authorised is watching the footage during the day.

3.12.59.5 was released back in October time and your SIMS Support should have notified you. If you contact your current SIMS support they should be able to provide you with the download file. I've just called SchoolICT to get a blasted "Test update" for FMS removed since it keeps looking to capitalsolus to download instead of ess-solus which interrupts all my other patches downloading correctly

You missed a few Cons, where at times users can't login as it trys to match their credentials with the wrong DB but works fine a few seconds later and that the URL changes randomly *every* time you click anything on the site Alas we use Parago for Site issues across the Trust, and while we have the App and Asset stickers on all the IT kit (even though we told the guy not to sticker the PC's) we have zero intention of using it for IT support. Would rather use Freshdesk which has a nicer interface for users and can also accept e-mail ticket submissions

Strange, our OneDrive on Demand client is working fine for all users with the C Drive hidden from the File Explorer (but only hidden, not Restrict) We hide it purely to ensure users aren't tempted to mess about even though we have NTFS permissions on all bar essential locations to prevent them from being able to modify content.

No need for a crane, few airbags under it and it'll be rite.

[ms office - o365] Can I remove a forwarding rule from admin center?
Boredguy replied to Sharkman's topic in Office Software
If it's a case of it's forwarding all e-mail, then yes you should be able to turn this off from within the normal Office 365 User Admin Centre. Select the user, and on the main list you should see "Email Forwarding". If it is set, you can click Edit and disable it so that $oldhead's account stays in their mailbox. We set our Head@ account as a distribution list, as it made it easier to move between people, as we've had a few different Head Teachers over the last 10 years, and each one either wants to deal with their own mail, or for the PA to handle it.- 3 replies

Cost of living crisis 2022 - what have you cut back on?
Boredguy replied to Ditto's topic in General Chat
Virtually nothing to be quite honest. Might cut back on Netflix, but that's purely down to the fact there isn't much on the service currently I want to watch to justify the subscription more so than any issues with overall costs. -
[sims] SIMS Spring 2022 error - Solus Update for new URL...
Boredguy replied to Koldov's topic in MIS Systems
but we all had e-mails sent from ESS saying that the old URL/Solus version was EoL after November.. however how many of them went to the school admin team and never passed them on is a completely different topic -
You can use the Message Trace option in the Exchange Admin Centre to see messages received by recipient and also see messages sent by recipient. You won't be able to see the body of the message, but you can see the subject, sender, recipient, times and even if it was delivered or sent to junk/quarentine.

Well updated our SIMS this morning, and the key was automatically included in the patch as we didn't need to enter anything

Running your servers - the cost of electricity vs cloud hosting
Boredguy replied to localzuk's topic in General Chat
That is a discussion you should have with your finance manager since they know how much capital formula the school gets, and which budgets it is assigned to. We used to split our capital funding between the Premises department and IT. My software budget always came from the general school capitation and not the capital.
