'Casting' PC display to multiple iPads
Boredguy replied to SimonL's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
We had a similar request before lockdown for a partically sighted student, so went down the Teams route as alternatives suggested by the LA team were VNC (No due to Data Security since users could connect at any time and see SIMS/ClassCharts etc that isn't being displayed if a screen is frozen but none of the other schools they had suggested it to had any issues with it) or Apple AirPlay -
I still wouldn't worry about having a USB handset for those users, since the Teams interface has the dial pad, quick dial options etc and they can use the number pad on the keyboard to dial numbers. Plus as you have to use the keyboard to type in the 365 name of the person you want to transfer and consult with, it doesn't make much sense. We went with one of our local telecoms providers so don't actually have a SBC setup on our tenancy, but just have voice routes going via voiceflex

Yealink seem to be at the cost effective range of devices compared to others like Audiocodes, Poly and Crestron when looking at Microsoft Business Desk Phone site. For example, we were around the £150 range for the MP-54's from one of our box shifter suppliers, so when you add it up even providing Bluetooth headsets to office based staff makes more logical sense than handsets.

Assuming these are shared mailboxes, the user can add it directly into their own mailbox as a folder below their own account so you don't have to switch accounts to access it. - right-click Folders in the left navigation pane, and then choose Add shared folder.
-
If you mean signing in to non-shared mailboxes then yes this was disabled. However you can still use the option to open another mailbox via the Avatar and select a Shared Mailbox you have access to as we do it all the time. If you mean different e-mail accounts in different tenancies, then it's easier to create a new profile in Edge or Chrome for them (with Edge you can then sign-in with that 365 account details. I've got about 8 different profiles setup for all the different tenancies within our MAT)

Finished Season 2 of The Warrior Nun, and while it wasn't quite as good as season 1 and there are no plans for a season 3, at least they left enough trails that could be picked up in the future though what the antagonist could be next time is a question mark

What sort of issue are you finding? I just have to remember to check the Teams Admin Panel at the start of the month to see if there is any updates needed, but I rarely have anyone say there is something up with the handset itself. We've got ours configured so some of the key people (Reception & IT Call Queues) are on the quick dial for that phones account, everything else they have to type in the name of the member of staff they want, or the external telephone number. Still confuses some people that there is no extension numbers.. going to confuse the other 4 schools when we roll out Teams to them before the end of the school year!

Keeping the firmware up to date is a Teams requirement more so than the handset requirement. Same as keeping the Team App valid on the device, as after a few months MS does not allow it to connect. One downside to any of the handsets is it limits the functionality when you want to transfer a call. In the Apps you can do a chat session easily since you have a keyboard... on a phone with just a small touch screen it is much much harder. Certainly using the PC App going between calls is easy enough as when you transfer and consult the incoming call goes on hold and you can switch between them before you finish the transfer (handy if you the person your transferring to wants more details). Think that is much more clunky via the phone interface unless you have a large screen

It is significantly easier to go down the headset route (we purchased all our staff USB Mono headsets, and the reception team went and got some Bluetooth ones so they can easily move around without getting caught up). I've only use the MP54's and they are our biggest bugbear as you need to ensure you check them monthly to ensure the firmware and version of the Teams app is up to date, as over 3 months old and they stop communicating. After 3 months of solid use on using Teams compared to the old PBX system, there is still some that don't like it, but the connivance factor of the headset over handset is much better... no need to go off to an office to call, some staff actually call IT support now from their classroom with an issue (if they don't want to use the chat feature) There are key locations where handsets are a good idea, but as a replacement for the old PBX switchboard isn't really one of them from what we've found and from our Telephony providers experience. Handsets with their own Teams account (so not the USB ones) also require a device licence so thats something to factor into it as well.

We've been using Teams since end of July, and all our reception staff are using the Teams app on the PC for calls (we only have a few Yealink MP54's for communal areas) We have a Call Queue setup for the Reception staff, and listed the users as agents within it. There are several options within the Call Queue on how to handle incoming calls, and I've got the routing method set to "Attendant Routing" which looks at the list in the Call Answering section and starts with the person at the top first (or main receptionist) and then flows down to the staff who are only covering once or twice a term. The Agent selection also allows the staff to opt out of taking the call, so within Teams, they can go into their settings and move the slider to enable/disable receiving calls from that queue. Only other modification we had to make was on the calling policy. Users we selected as "Reception staff" have a slightly different calling policy so that "Busy on Busy when in a call" is set to enabled instead of "unanswered". This stops the call queue from trying to present another call to the user while they are in the middle of one.

The GA account in Office 365 can easily add members as Owners of the SharePoint group, but it will still show the original user as the creator if no-one has actually updated the site page, especially if the content is dynamic or just used as a document store. This type is issue is why I generally only put 1 or 2 accounts as Owners on the actual SharePoint sites.. Teams can have more since any "Teacher" is automatically a Owner for them as the students are the members, but for most SharePoint sites, the bulk of the staff can just be visitors unless they have a need to create pages/update documents but even then you can use other permissions on the folders to allow a smaller subset
-
Yes you can do this within SharePoint, and I do it often on our Class Teams. There is nothing stopping you from removing the group from any folder within the SharePoint Documents or Pages and substituting it with different permissions for other groups. Heck you can remove all the default groups within it and either use Direct User permission or AD Group in the same manner as NTFS. Also this can only be done by people in the "" group, which is normally the account that created the SP Site and anyone they added.

We use Teams for this since access to OneDrive via URL link in the admin portal is only for Admin users, and while each student could share a folder in their OneDrive, it's a lot to maintain. Each student has a folder within the Channel's Files, and we remove the " Members" permission from each students folder and directly assign that students account to have modify rights. That way the other kids can't access anyone else's work, but the teacher can easily see them all.

DfE Connecting the Classroom project funding
Boredguy replied to password1234's topic in Wireless Networks
We had a spec for WiFi, Switches and Backbone for 1 of our sites, and it's majorly overkill in some respect. 16 core Fibre runs to each of the new PoE switch locations to give 2 x 10Gb Backhauls. Could easily just run 8 Core and still have upgrade future expansion over the other 4 pairs. It certainly isn't the WiFi system I would have picked and it needs to use their own switch gear to get the bandwidth to each AP (which is in every single classroom, hate to think of the channel fights on the 2.4Gh range but at least they can reduce power which might throw heatmap estimates out a bit) It's almost as if because it's grant funding they want to throw the kitchen sink at it instead of whats needed to actually do it to a normal standard we would all expect. -
Just remember if using this method that if you have not updated the DNS records it can end up marking the messages as potential spam when the message runs through the spf checks. Other option (which seems to be working fine for us with Legacy Disabled in 365 and should work with FMS even though we've not used it for 5 years) is to setup an on site Mail relay that has a valid 365 account it is authenticating with, that has Send As rights to the mailbox your e-mails are going out from. So far all our Powershell/Photocopiers/SCCM etc is still happily sending the messages out via this route without any errors so knowing how long it takes EES to fix stuff it might be a better option

Your Microsoft Licence supplier should have been able to provide you with those prices, as assuming you use Windows Servers/Office on site you should have some form of an Educational Licence scheme in place be it OVS-EES, Select etc. Prices on the web are generally business or public pricing and not educational.- 34 replies

Teams Sites or Just SharePoint for Staff Departmentals areas
Boredguy replied to mdrabble's topic in How do you do....it?
For the staff areas, it's along the lines of "EnglishDept", "ScienceDept", however I will be updating them to have our school site code in front once we move tenancies since we will have 5 school "English Departments" if we don't have them all under the single "Trust" one -
Teams Sites or Just SharePoint for Staff Departmentals areas
Boredguy replied to mdrabble's topic in How do you do....it?
I'm only trusting the OneDrive client purely for the users own documents, everything else we're pointing them to either the Web interface, or use the "Sites" button when in the Office applications instead of the old File Explorer -

InTune itself does not come with the A1 level licence, its normally only with A3 or higher (or you can get an add on like the A3 EM&S which also covers it) You will have access to endpoint site as any hybrid or AD registered devices will show in it, but you are limited with what you can do.- 34 replies

Teams Sites or Just SharePoint for Staff Departmentals areas
Boredguy replied to mdrabble's topic in How do you do....it?
Hadn't thought about going down the different document libraries route, might look into that for the tenancy move for the summer since we have multiple schools to merge resources from local storage. I went down the Teams route for Departments since some already had a departmental distribution list, which was easy to upgrade to Teams back before COVID was a thing, and was the logical step for documents since they had been using Teams for meeting and teaching classes during the Pandemic and they needed to use it regularly as it's now our phone system as well. That said, our "Intranet" for staff is now a SharePoint site, and for ease of staff finding content I've gone to each of the Teams SharePoint page (since that's all Teams filestore is) and put the URL to the channel with the document library into a User Targeted Menu. This means I can point staff to the common "Documents" link, but they only see the Links to Teams they are in, so while everyone gets a "General Resources" link from that SharePoint site, those doing multiple subjects see them as well and it takes them directly to that document library. This also allowed departments to have their own team SharePoint page and can post news, which in turn I can pick up on the main page based on what they have access to. However the reason for doing it this way that actually came to light quickly since September.... the ever helpful "shortcut to OneDrive" option. Having all 2Tb of departmental areas within a single SharePoint site and having a teacher click that link meant the OneDrive client would try and index the entire SharePoint site and download it to the workstation. Fine if your only on 1 device like a laptop.. but as our staff move workstations the delay in resources appearing for a single Team shortcut was bad enough for 2 teachers, never mind several accidently doing it for the whole Staff resources. Not saying it's a bad thing, but it certainly got a few confused staff for a day or two. There is no right or wrong route to go down for the file storage, it just depends how you want to manage it, as at the end of the day both Teams and SharePoint are exactly the same.. just 1 is better suited for mass use and one is meant to be for smaller groups. -
Conditional Access - Two Factor Authentication
Boredguy replied to Bankesy's topic in Cloud Services
If your a global admin and have not adjusted the security settings, then it will prompt you to setup 2 authentication methods. All our staff only get prompted for the single method with our CA setup, but on 1 tenancy us admins still have to setup the old phone authentication as well. I could change it, but as we are moving from it at the end of the school year it's just something we have to remember when creating any GA accounts which is rare. -
You can easily have different policies for different users to redirect their Documents We've been using OneDrive for a few years now, and DJ did a good guide for it that we've rolled out across the MAT http://www.edugeek.net/forums/how-do-you-do/216456-microsoft-onedrive-365-a.html
