Few pedestrians hesitate looking the wrong way i.e. on a central island on roundabout exits and entrances so have a few time sat in car at a standstill until made decision to jus edge slowly forward incase pedestrian turns and realizes then makes a dash for it.

There are threads on here about using virtual box on each machine, might be worth a look. How many students/VMs are you talking about and would this be isolated to certain year groups?

From what I understand is BBC studios sells programmes that are made using gov/tax payers money to other countries. Maybe that is what they are trying to deal with? It is all questionable but prob not one for here.

This is going to be interesting if it is self signed cert issue. There are advantages to using self signed certs for Radius 802.1x. Some devices only like certs that don't last longer than 13 months too, that has been a known issue for a while. Network Firewall doing what it should by default and blocking anything that is not specifically allowed :-) Modern windows has a habit of using a service (Network Location Awareness aka NLASVC) to identify if a PC has internet connectivity result occasionally the (un)helpful globe and some applications not working. I'd be looking at nlasvc especially as you specify some windows devices are having issues.

Older kit i.e ProCurve use the trunk terminology when you have multiple ports in a aggregation group. Cisco use the trunk terminolgy when you have multiple vlans on a same port The old 3com switches which HP bought out and also badged Aruba or HPE use a different language and now you have Aruba CX too. Must admit I am a cli guy more than a web interface on switches. Besides if you have a blank switch or need to get a direct connection when the web gui is not working like when having network issue it becomes more easier to troubleshoot if you can get console connectivity. I also rolled out 120 Aruba switches and had power shell spit out txt files which I then jus pasted into the cli interface based on a few different parameters in a csv. Not a fan of locking the switches into Central anytime soon. We have got iMC but could jus not get it setting the cert on the switches properly. But we do a some stuff on iMC like rolling out minor changes to multiple switches, doing firmware updates, firmware/asset reports, etc.

I know in the past I have set VMWare hosts to look at external NTP and the PDC emulator that was VM on host to external ntp sources. Cannot remember exact cli command on Windows I used at the time was 6 years ago.

If you really want to go down the AD domain re-naming route I would advise using a subdomain of a public domain you own for internal use. https://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/34981.active-directory-best-practices-for-internal-domain-and-network-names.aspx You can add a UPN quite easily and this can normally be completely different from the internal AD name as others have said.

At a previous place we were finding loads of projectors left on i.e. firing light at the screen. We rolled out a shutdown policy and set the projectors to go standby when no signal recieved. Reduced electricity and bulb cost. But I did have some rooms I set to startup automatically earlier for updates etc. 1 staff member out of about 200 wasn't that happy but the change was OK with SMT so it stood.

I've seen this once or twice. Student plugged network cable between 2 ports. If you split up the network into vlans it segregates and localizes the network issues caused by loops. As well as employing loop protection, spanning tree etc.

I have the TP-Link Kasa HS110. They show consumption. I am with you on trying not to have servers at home especially since WFH I have removed my AD, Cert sevices, Radius and now jus got my 2 HA firewalls running on ESXi but migrating to a couple of MikroTiks to reduce the power and complexity. Still a bit of complexity but nothing involving Microsoft apart from a laptop and a few desktops :-) Still a need to have backups and a NAS so have got most VMs working on Synology as running them anyway for Emby etc.

The issue is with most search engines that the data is encrypted so even search terms might bring up un-suitable content. Have you looked at Cloudflare, not looked much into myself.

It varies. We have switches 15+ years old that get replaced within a few days. Newer switches such as 2530, 2540 and 2930 are 5 years for original purchaser I think. You can check on Aruba Warranty page. I put in 120 switches (a mixture of 2530s and 2540s all PoE+) in summer 2016 and had 2 2540's replaced under warranty in that time. We have new builds with up to 20 2930f's for 2-3 years and no issues with switches so far. Hope not jinx'd it now. I know a previous place had 2810's and they seemed ok but we've replaced 3 faulty of them in the last 5-6 years out of a total of about 10 in production. The 2810's are old switches though.

You can get away with Home Assistant and wifi controlled lights/plugs without a hub. You can run HomeAssistant on a Pi or as a VM. But I'd recommend looking at the things it currently supports. Other options out there too as well even alternatives to Alexa, Google i.e. Mycroft

I had bought a few Hue sensors as already had a Hue. One sensor worked and one did not. The one in the Kitchen has been flawless (setup to switch on the HUE strip light whenever it senses movement but only after dusk) but the one I bought for the Hall never seemed to connect to the Hue hub. Apart from that I have Z-Wave hub (and a few sensors for temp etc.) which I have not got back into testing, Home Assistant which I have tied into Hue but not done any automation with yet and some TP-Link Kasa smart plugs some monitoring consumption and some jus plain switches. The Kasa plugs seem reliable enough, I have 4 of them tied into Home Assistant.

What profiles are you using, is it possible if using roaming that printers are moving with original users?

I'd be careful if you have no traceability of who logged calls. Not sure what the user base is like but I've had and continue to get calls with no where near enough info, not even a location/IP address anything. One such call still makes me laugh although the amount of time it took to resolve the issue took a lot less than actually speaking to the user and finding out what the actual issue was. If you do not know who raised the ticket you will lose that whereas if you get a corridor request at least you have a face and can ask a bit more info.

This is a good point, about how the camera reacts should there be a a power issue and the cameras are up before the DHCP issue. I have done both before now for printers as some of the old HPs I've had issues with the JetDirect interface losing settings.

DHCP with reservations will give more flexibility for the cameras. Def static IP addresses for the switches though. If the cameras are Unifi i.e. it does not matter to the NVR/Controller what the IP is then there is prob no need but if the Controller/NVR relies on the IP as an identifier then you would be better to use reservations. I'd still document the camera i.e. location, network MAC address, patch/wall panel port and switch port at the minimum
