    I certainly agree about freshly ground coffee. Using a decent grinder to grind a good quality bean will result in a great coffee. Of course - even at home, one doesn't always have time to do this, and thus why I tend to use a few cans of the Illy ground coffee per month these days. I don't mind Lavazza, however prefer Illy. Both the beans and ground version are a great quality coffee, if not a little expensive.

    I've been looking at the Illy pod machines. They look like awesome kit (these). Pods technically should be better, as the pods will be pressurized/sealed allowing the coffee to remain at it's freshest.

    There have been some good pros and cons above, lots I agree with, but there is also one other big con I'd put forward: they are quite fragile. Drop one on a hardened surface / school floor and it will smash or be damaged. I'm not sure how much of an issue the weight of them / holding them safely and securely while using them at the same time will be with some of the younger primary kids too. That may not be an issue, but I would certainly keep it in mind.

    Yes, provided the Messaging options are setup to do that in Moodle (which IRC they are by default). Do as secretlife says and have a look at the Messaging options to verify they are set to send emails rather than pop-up messages etc. That is correct regarding SMTP settings, if your SMTP server needs authentication fill it out with a dummy account username and password - such as a noreply account you may create. Our SMTP server doesn't need authentication, as it only works for a handful of hosts, so we just enter the smtp.domain.com address in there and off it goes.

    We have had a few issues with trying to get some GPO's to apply to Windows 8 Pro machines. I still haven't worked out why our IE settings won't apply either.

    If your new server has SMTP setup, or the SMTP option is completed in settings, Moodle should send messages to whatever address is set in the email field of the user profile. That is assuming, you haven't turned off email messages in Moodle's settings.

    I am aware of that setting, it is set but it still doesn't seem to work as desired.

    At the moment, the way I am using Windows 8 that works well enough for me. However, I guess if I bought one of those lovely looking Surface Tablets, I guess I'd probably want it to work well, just like my iPad and iPhone do now, so you are right in it needs fixing.

    I have noticed a lot of the stock apps keep updating regularly at the moment, so hopefully Microsoft's devs will fix some of the issues with the mail app. Having said that, I am not _too_ fussed if they don't - I am happy to carry on just using a web browser or install Outlook as I have done for the past decade or so!

    Yes you have too install the app. I spent about 15 minutes looking for where to save stuff in Desktop view. The Metro app doesn't actually download anything it seems until requested - similar to a mobile app. The desktop client does, obviously. I guess it will be one of those stupid Win 8 things we get used to in time.

    I noticed when you delete something from a Gmail account using it, it doesn't actually delete it - but almost like archives it. Very irritating.

    It's free, included within Google Apps. Postini was always free to Google Apps Education too IRC.

    Probably. I have had to use netsh with the previews too. There are a few things with Windows that require a proxy set with netsh to work, it is about time that Microsoft just added a standard proxy setting in control panel that covers everything.

    Also, you didn't mention which software package you were talking about.

    Check out Cumulus (free/donation funded). Sandaysoft It has a semi decent application that runs on your server for viewing conditions, but it also FTP's HTML files to your web server - and these web pages are pretty good. The guy that writes it is great for support too, definitely worth checking out. We use it with our Vantage Pro 2 and are very happy with it.

    Why have this as an app? A mobile optimised web page is ideal for something like this.. take advantage of Webkit and HTML5. Phones have great support for this stuff. Not only that, it will be cross platform. If you want a web app to appear as an actual app, just encourage users to save a shortcut to their home screen.

    Wouldn't you email parents using BCC anyway? If I understand (and remember) correctly that then counts as sending only one email?

    Just to update this thread.. This problem seems to have resolved itself over the last week or so, which makes me believe it was in fact a Google fault. Strange problem, none the less.

    Define insanity. Google Apps isn't very popular here. Being a full Microsoft house would also be beneficial.

    Has anyone migrated from Google Apps to Live@Edu/Office365? I am going to be looking at doing this - probably wouldn't bother moving over the students existing mailboxes (give them new empty ones), but we would need to do the staff ones and I get the feeling it will be a painful experience!
