As an alternative to logging in to student email accounts - you could consider turning on "Journalling" - so a copy of every email sent is copied to a journal account where you can look at them. We have this set up, with an automatic "delete after 30 days" rule - so that senior staff can monitor what has gone on over the last month. It takes a bit of disk space - but has the advantage that students cannot just delete emails that have been sent/received before someone sees them.

I think that the real problem started when failure to achieve at school stopped being the student's responsibility and became the school's. At that point you cease to have any usable sanctions as every failure is a poor reflection on the school rather than on the students within it.

Stone Computers are offering a service like this - they flyered me the other week - can't remember the pricing though. We bought some support from Dataspire - 10 events for so much - which is OK as we only use it in emergencies.

I think this is the old problem of non-certified drivers - if the device is not MS certified - you get this problem - afaik there is no workaround

Just wondered what non-SIMS schools were using to run their Finance depts? We have CMIS - but have hung onto to FMS (much to my chagrin) - the accounts in CMIS look pretty average - so do any of you guys run a vanilla accounts package - and if so - do you have any problems with sending stuff to the LA etc? Afriad that wasn't true for me - some of the meetings were so poorly attended - it became depressing - at the 50th Anniversay event - the only attendees were the 6 committee members - I knocked it on the head after that!

You'll need to make sure that your attendance recording is top notch though - or you'll have a lot of unhappy parents getting called!

Couldn't agree more - and eventually - I think it will have to move that way. It took a few "loss of life" disasters before engineers went that way in 19C - maybe it'll take the same to push computer professionals in the same direction. Industry lead certification is all well and good - but personally I think there more to running successful IT projects/departments than technical competancy.

We had a very similar problem which turned out to be the permissions - the Veritas "user" had to be in the Backup Operators group AND the Local Administrators group on the server, else the backup failed in this manner. We always thought that the Backup Operator group would've given sufficient rights - but apparently not...

They'd certainly need to be more robust than the smart cards we rolled - the students enjoyed crushing the embedded chip and gouging the ID photo off the cards...

I would suspect that with BSF and increasing central management of school ICT, there will be very little scope for small MIS players in the next few years. Of course, when everyone tires of the expense and inconvenience of outsourcing and starts to bring it all back in house - there will be lots of opportunities (in about 10 years??)
