Hi - we've got a web developer jazzing up the school website and he is having a lot of trouble getting database stuff working on our EMBC host. When I called, they assured me that they supported MS Access and MySQL - but it is apparently causing a lot of hassle and not working. Just wondered if anyone else was using their EMBC space with databases etc and whether you had to do anything special to get it working? Cheers

We AutoIT'd it - seemed to go OK - though its not as easy as the old system - specially as it demanded a server with no other web server stuff running - which was a pain.

Someone posted a script to do this on here some time ago - it worked great - and we were using it up til we installed Smoothwall a little while ago.

Had shares in a PET in 1980 - when it was aREALLY expensive piece of kit - Space Invaders wasted a lot of time and we wrote a Glaxians clone for ot too. We wrote a versionof Spacies that ran on a teletype machine linked to the college mainframe - a frame every 20 seconds or so...

We use a little freebie gizmo called Winsync http://www.truetime.net/software-winsync.html It does the job and is dead easy to set up

Yep - long term Opera user - its great! Specially now they've got the option to have Bookmarks folders displaying properly again after they took it out a while ago.

We used to do this - but the students got wise to the fact that pulling the network cable out during the login process gave them more access than they should have had. - On super mandatories now - and its much better.

Huh? I thought holidays, and sick pay were all legally protected rights? (as well as things like maternity leave and now paternity leave). It didn't "just happen" due to employer philanthropy - there was a lot of conflict that resulted in these "rights". And if you're complacent about them - look how quickly decent pension schemes have disappeared over the last 10 years, and at the statistics for how many people do not take all of their holiday entitlements and work many many hours of unpaid overtime - some of this is due to some misplaced idea that you should put in more hours than you are paid for (to see how silly this is - ask your garage or plumber to do a couple of unpaid hours work for you...), but a lot is down to fear of what will happen if you don't kowtow...

You also have to keep in mind that north sea oil was coming on stream, and that by the mid '80's the revenue from this was so huge that it was enough to pay the unemployment benefit for millions of people for many years without sacrificing the promise of tax cuts for the rich. The 1983 election was all about gaining control of this revenue. Can someone explain to me what the point of keeping construction workers, electricians, plumbers and the like out of work was, when it was obvious that the county's infrastructure (schools, hospitals, roads, railways and public transport) needed rebuilding, and that this was the best opportunity of doing it since Victorian times? What have we got now? BSF and P4S, because Labour are in thrall to this low tax agenda set in train in the '80's. The Tories behaved like an elected junta, and allowed whole swathes of the country to go to the wall. Yep - its extremely disheartening to see what happened to our oil revenue (p*ssed away on dole money instead of used to invest) in comparison to somewhere like Norway (all oil revenues invested in a nation wide pension scheme that will keep them all happy in years to come. Thatcher did a good job of breaking up organised labour - whether you think that is a good thing depends on whether you think you can cut yourself a better deal with your employer on your own than you can as part of an organised body. Given the amount of effort that companies put in to making sure that people opt to reject union representation, I think we can safely guess what the answer is. Most of us here, are the beneficiaries of holiday and pension entitlements that are relatively generous - having come from commercial - I can say that stress and work balance wise - this job is fairly OK in comparison. If I get an out of hours call, then I may or may not respond - in industry it wasn't optional in any sense. Colleagues were often forced to cancel arranged holidays, dragged in for over night and even entire weekend stints, on site client support started at 8:30 in the morning and continued until they were finished with you, wherever in the country you happened to be. Things that we nowadays take for granted, such as holidays, pensions, paid sick pay etc are not "rights", they were hard fought for by organised labour, and you can see the attrition rate at which they are now being lost, now that unions are not so powerful. Great news if you own or run a big firm, not so great if, like most of us, we are going to spend our lives working within one. The perception touted about that Local Govt staff are cushioned from real life by a decent pension scheme which should be stopped (even though it is entirely self funded - unlike teachers (oh they aren't keen on unions are they - ho ho) - is extremely misleading - all citizens on the 4th richest country in the world should be able to look forward to a comfortable retirement - and that increasingly is not the case. Just a thought...

We keep vandalised and broken CD drives for this purpose - just bolt them in the holes.

Well - hush my mouth - it all turned up this morning - another huge Installation Manual to read and inwardly digest.

They are not very dynamic - I faxed off our stuff a week ago - but nothing yet - I phoned today and they reckoned it might ber out in a week or so - which given it needs to be done by the end of October wasn't very helpful - they've now agreed to pull their collective finger out for me...

I'd ercommend you use it with System Change Log - http://www.greyware.com/software/systemchangelog/ It makes it loads easier to see what went on!

We had a demo of a mobile radio station last week - very nice if you've around £15k spare. He glossed over my question about the legality of mp3 tracks saying that although technically illegal, no one would get prosecuted....hmmmm....
