Over the summer, I'm going to rebuild both of our DCs. Briefly, I'm going to 1 - Transfer the FSMO roles from existing main DC to other 2 - Transfer the GC 3 - I think the DNS should be OK, as other DC should have a copy 4 - DHCP - any suggestions on this? 5 - DC Promo down 6 - Rebuild 7 - reverse process above 8 - Reinstall misc software Then rebuild the other DC Have I forgotten anything?

Its really good - we reorganised our main boards on this style in the Easter break - with short cables it makes maintenance SO much easier

If you've the cash - you could buy DiskNet Pro - it does this and loads of other stuff besides.

Did this last night (didn't reckon with todays date). It took ages for the servers to reboot and the DCs wouldn't come back at all until I powered them off and then took about 25 minutes to boot. Everything seems OK now (fingers crossed).

Well - its a choice between collectivism and individualism innit... Whether you think that everyone should club together to buy something that benefits the whole community or not. NHS is the prime example - nobody wants to pay for this before they are going to use it - but most of us are glad its there when we need it. I don't "like" paying the license fee - but I do like getting Radio 4 or watching BBC4 - neither of which would exist in a commercial only media world, and are the kicking off board for lots of the most popular shows on TV that would never have been made by a commercial company. I've no doubt that the Beeb will be destroyed in the not too distant future as we seem in this country to have an overwhelming desire to destroy anything that works well and replace it with a load of cr@p. :?

Seconded! I hate the thought of all the media in this country run by Murdoch and his like - its worth a few quid to stop that happening.

The thing is that the licence doesn't cover all BBC services - they might be funded out of the licence fee, but you don't need a licence to access them. If I didn't have a TV I could listen to a radio or go online for free and not watch BBC TV; I, however, also listen to the radio, go online, don't watch BBC TV yet have to pay for it because I do watch some other commercial channels. Barking. You can also get equipment which receives the sound from BBC but no picture (my blind grandmother has one), and this doesn't require a licence!! This is fairly recent though - I can remember the Radio license - it only got rolled into the TV license when most homes had a TV.

No - but you pay your Road Tax whether or not you drive your car.

I think retailers are obliged by law to tell the licensing people about purchases of receiving equipment.

Having kept records of pages printed against cartridge replacement - its apparent that most of our HP printers simply signal that a cart is empty after a set number of pages have been printed (eg 5000 on the 4600s). Fortunately many allow you to override the cartridge out message by fiddling about in the menus and keep on printing until it really is empty.

Hi We're looking to buy some new IT suite PCs - possibly Dell - but not definitely - any recommendations on models that are resistant to the constant attrition they suffer in schools? ie - lockable cases, no panels to push in, cable lock downs etc? Cheers

I split ours onto 2 servers under advice from Serco to stop the constant ePortal crashing - it frankly made no difference at all. What made it all stable were the registry entries to restrict Java memory usage - since those we've had very little trouble.

We've started using small padlocks to tie together the cables - which has slowed things down a bit - I sourced a load for about £1.35 each - which seemed cheap in comparison to the amount of mice and keyboards that were walking.
