  1. I'd be interested to hear how you get on - as we are looking to do this shortly.
  2. I'll stick with my 4Mbit unlimited from NTL - they are playing with shaping - but most of the time I get the full whack - not bad for currently £12pm
  3. Did you "roll yer own" Smoothwall - or have it installed for you? I'm thinking of having a look at it.
  4. PAT testing is all a big con anyway - you can understand why it was brought in for "Portable Appliances" ie things like handheld drills etc with lots of movement in the electrical cable day after day - but for PCs stuck on desks with their cables probably cable tied into conduiting - a complete waste of time and money.
  5. What firewall/web filtering products do you use GD??
  6. We managed to sell a load on eBay a while back.
  7. Yep - looks OK - they emailed me yesterday and said they had external support people in to try and fix it - seems they've managed to do it without getting my login and password they requested!
  8. Buy yourself a couple of Digital Photography type mags - they usually have a range of continuous ink feed suppliers
  9. OK - while we're on reservations and printers - I use them for my HPs - but even though I give the reservation a nice meaningful name - I always find it gets overwritten by the HP printers device name thingie - you know the NPI76576 type job. Any ideas on how to stop that?
  10. Actually - after looking at the crib - most of the info was about how I was going to rebuild the old Exchange server. But here's the few lines left that are about Exchange. The KB822931 is the meat of it - have a good read of that before you start. Blimey - how do you insert a file on this thing?? Never mind - I'll just paste the text as its short. Notes for Exchange Server Move Note the IP/WINS info on the old server Exchange Server Manager – note the SMTP details Check & note the Recipient Policies – these act as the defaults for new users, the SMTP one should be @..sch.uk Install Exchange on the new server Move the mailboxes from old server to new server – easiest through ADUC – find the Exchange Mailbox objects and select and move – this will take some time – double check that they have transferred without error. Refind in ADUC – should see the location now set as new server Don’t take the System and SMTP mailboxes Old server is currently the “bridgehead server” – this is the equivalent of being the PDC. Need to move this role to new server – see KB 822931
  11. Funny that - coz I reckon the opposite - statics (or reservations) are easier long term - DHCP is good for a quick fix.

  13. I did this the other week - I'll post up my crib notes if you want.
  14. I don't know that you could ever write a plan that detailed. I think its better to have defined milestones and targets - so that expertise can be bought in if required. Alas - I think that if I was dead under a pile of smoking servers, worrying about the DR plan will be low on my list...
  15. Or you could take a hex editor to the executable and see if the location is hard coded - long as you keep the length of the name the same - it might be possible to change it!
  16. I gave them a standalone PC in the staff room that gets wiped once a month. Not that they ever used it...
  17. Thanks for that - Imight pass on the details on Monday - see if it helps. I was told in no uncertain terms, last time I called .ict (and that was just for a phone number) - that without a contract, they would not speak to me. I'm not bothered by that - as I call EMBC direct for problems - and they said that other schools were also having this problem - so I reckon its an EMBC problem rather than a local one.
  18. Dunno about you - but it doesn't seem fixed for me - looking at LogMeIn's status window shows the connection being chopped off every 2 minutes throughout the day. They called me to tell me it was fixed earlier - but I had to go back and tell them it wasn't (at least for me).
  19. Cheers Russ - they denied that anything had changed at their end when I spoke to the helpdesk - and got the distinct impression that it had been blocked by request of .ict/LA, though they wouldn't say that directly. I'd be really interested to hear of the response. As to the kids using it - they did here until we blocked it for them.
  20. We've been using Logmein for doing remote stuff at weekends/evenings for ages - but this last week it seems to just lock up and kick us out. It works OK to sites that are not here. I spoke to EMBC about it - they were very cagey about it and referred me to speak to the LA - anybody else experiencing this? I can't talk to .ICT as we don't contract with them anymore and they won't speak to me.
  21. Course - they might have done it through the options on the monitor itself
  22. We don't even have a staff room - just "team bases" that are very cliquey. Though its very "officers and other ranks" here - pretty much we're pondlife (unless they want a favour).
  23. Looks a bit long winded to me - mine does the same - but just looks at the OU that the PC is in and allocates the default printer accordingly.
  24. We use it. I think it has the potential to be a good product - but its not an install and go live type system - you need to consider how you are going to use it and tailor it accordingly - which takes time. Support can be very slow and 20-40 minute waits listening to music are not uncommon.
