We're chatting to NTL if you're in their area, also to the local University - who are thinking about hiving us off a chunk of their SuperJanet connectivity - though they're being a bit slow coming back to us on that one.

I dunno - I couldn't understand why the tests weren't internet/thin client based - I take the point about a net outtage - but you could just as likely have an in house server/network problem.

Think it would be fair to say that some education has been privately funded (ie the Public schools (less than 10%) - and these only after a grab for schools that were free to the local populace prior to (hence the inappropriate name)). Church schools are mostly publicly funded just the same as other state schools (I work in one!) - so I can't see how the cost would increase much - you just get the great situation where all the tax payers pay, but a slim minority gets to call the shots - s'life I guess.

Run all file writes & reads and backups through a transparent encryption utility. Then disable it. Ouch!

Yeah - I used to work for the Training & Enterprise Councils - they had a Govt appointed IT project that cost in excess of 87 million - but delivered nothing usable (except bigger cars for the consultants). Then we had to do it ourselves properly (then they made us all redundant, took it back inhouse and ballsed it up again) - talk about deja vu.... Go BSF!

We have just implemented ABTutor - and yes - you can define what the staff get access to do via the restrictions available on each classroom.

We're trialling DiskNet at the moment - it looks very good (though not cheap). You can specify which files on the stick you don't like and force them to delete the files before thewy can use it in the PC. Cool.

I really don't think you want to use it over dial up! One thing to check before you hike over to the farm - make sure there is a lesson scheduled for the kid during the time you're there - or it will be a big waste of time...

A quick download is a lot easier for us FMS only places - just a pity the Capita support desk couldn't tell me about it when I rang last week, before I spent ages reading all the Solus documentation. Still worth knowing for the future.

We bodged a copy of our Helpdesk (Liberum) for the Site Staff and another log incoming calls through Reception - but they are very rarely used (by our technophobic staff).
