I'd be more inclined to use them as convenient thin clients.

At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old man - is this not where we have the wrong slant on the world = a kid searches for and prints out pron when he should be working - but its the school, not the kid, who gets a clip round the ear (metaphorically)

Have you got an idiot install guide you could let me see - as this "advice" came straight from the Capita support desk, when we were failing to get a new install working. Cheers

Could someone post a script to shutdown PCs using psshutdown? It keeps hanging when I try it - I try to give a warning, then shutdown and log it all to a log file (2003 & XP)

We've had a real run around setting up FMS on a new PC - I couldn't believe that you still need to install BDE even after the move to SQL - typical &%&%&% SIMS

When I wuz a lad - I worked in a petrol station - no fancy training shannigans in those days - my mate was having a crafty fag at the counter and managed to set fire to the plastic waste bin...in a panic he hefted it out through the door onto the forecourt that was awash with spilt fuel. We watched the bin burn down to a nasty black blob, praying that we weren't going to be the worst fire in Coventry since the blitz - and indeed nothing caught alight. On the other hand - I worked in Mine Safety too - and watching a flash fire that happens when coal dust reaches a certain level in the air is really scary - we got called to a custard factory after they had a flash fire there too - it was a right mess.

Yes - same for staff and students during school hours, more relaxed out of school hours - this was mainly for 2 reasons - as above, you get a lot of irritating calls about students not being able to get to pages that the teacher can, and also that the teacher's login becomes a lot more appealing to hack, if they have unrestricted access.

OK - no we don't allow people to update manually - and no we don't WSUS either - we update through a series of build through the year - so we know things aren't going to "break". Doesn't look like a HD prob either - as we've had 4 PCs in one corridor go today - which I think looks like some wierd activation thing - specially as I think its about 2 months since their last rebuild...Still looking...

Hi - 2003 with XP SP2 - several of our PCs have just started coming up with errors about "Windows Product Activation" - saying that there is an error which is preventing windows fron checking the license for this computer. These are all built (via Ghost) using VLKs - which I thought didn't require activation, and have been running OK for a while - the actual Ghost build is from last September sometime. After this error has shown up once, the machine just goes into a reboot loop, and you can't get in at all as Admin or in safe mode. A complete rebuild seems to fix it (for the moment). Anybody got any ideas??

I'm not quite clear how relinquishing control of a school to a third party will improve results?

Similar problem here with EMBC during their recent transition - where (I think) they had a pair of outwardly facing routers - one of which had been updated to the latest firmware and the other hadn't - so depending which one your session got allocated to and depending on overall loading you got to the internet...or not...

I'd like to know who they are too - as I'm about to get quotes for some Dell desktops - anyone else really happy with a Dell supplier?

Quality here went down when it was outsourced - prior to that the cleaners took a pride in their rooms - after it went out - there was high staff turnover as the long time cleaners said they weren't given enough time to do a proper job and left - now its just a constantly rotating group who seem to do the bare minimum. They never come in our room as they don't have a key and don't get to here before we leave.

And ABTutor...

If you're thinking of using them for the students....don't - it was a complete pain for us - they were either lost, defaced or just plain cut up - they were used for access control and cost a couple of quid each - and as the kids swap them amongst themselves - you never knew who was where.

Shame - we find ABTutor is fine on our thin clients

Has anyone used GParted on a 2003 server? I'd like to change some partitions - other posts on the web suggest its OK - just wondered if anyone here had any practical experience?
