Aluminium was used quite a lot in the 70's - it feeds a lot of villages around here (Northants) and the cables are degraded due to oxidation. You can't get a decent BB signal - but they are good enough for voice which is all BT will guarantee. People I know there had to band together to install "line of sight" connectivity from the top of a local church to achieve anywhere near decent speeds. Even more irritating was the fact that they know NTL/Virgin cables run right through the village, but they are not allowed to take a tap off to get cable speeds.

Off for a whole two weeks - bliss! And the school is physically shut from the 24th-2nd - so don't even have totake many days holiday

Using GBPVR on a cheap PC at the moment - working fine - needs a TV card with onboard mpeg encoding though.

Yeah - the lending barriers were there for a reason - to stop a huge credit boom and bust that caused the Great Depression - you could only borrow 3x your salary tops - house prices stayed sensible because no one could afford to pay stupid prices. I feek for you - it was very similar here - and it does make you cross. However, they will need an NM to put right all the rubbish that gets done by the consultants - that'll keep you busy for the next few years.

Well I was being flip with my reply - though its partly true. Personally I have no debt now - so am more than a little irritated that my taxes are going to subsidise people who didn't manage their finances as prudently as me It seemed pretty obvious that you can't sustain an economy based on more and more lending for ever. In fact - to me it seems obvious that you can't sustain an economy where you don't make much that you can export and earn income on anymore - but I'm just an old style engineer, what do I know...

I imagine that Serco will wash their hands of any support issues if you start writing to the database without their agreement. I've never found a proper data dictionary for the system, so you are only having an educated guess at what the fields are used for - not a problem for extracting data - but a big prob putting it back in.

Alas we've found that that GPO does not disable access to command.com - as it is an old 16 bit prog - unfortunately necessary for some nacky old programs we still have to run.

Couldn't you just buy a decentish TV card for a PC and plug a VCR in? Then you have sopme options for editing, reencoding etc
