Hi We've got one of these Axel clients on appro - but we seem to be having a strange problem - everytime it connects to the Citrix servers - the one connects to crashes with an "Unexpected Error". Anybody got any ideas on what might cause this?

Mix in the sugar and fruit. Mix in the eggs and knead lightly til its a nice dough. Roll out to about quarter inch thick and cut out into circles 2 or 3 inches across. Cook on bakestone until done (you can use a heavy frying pan with just wipe of the butter paper - must be HOT - just check the underside until its brown and then turn and cook the other side) Dredge with sugar and eat while still warm (if possible as they're never so nice cold)

Not sure what you mean - medical patents run for 20 years - but musical copyright is 50 years, soon to be 75 - there doesn't seem to be much equity there. I'd even go along with a period of performers life plus 5 years say - which would mean Cliff would still be in the money - but many performers from the 50s 60s 70s and even later would be available in the public domain. As I say - this is an arrangement to balance the benefits to the performer and those to the community at large - and imho the corporations are abusing that deal by extending the terms through extensive "lobbying"

We here were being fastracked to Academy status - but there was a prolonged and vigorous reaction from parents - at the moment it has been deferred for a year - though not sure whether this was down to parent pressure or the quality of the bid.

Well basically because that IS the deal that is struck by copyright - just the same as the drug companies get a fixed number of years to exploit the drugs that they discover and test (or rip off from native peoples) - then its open for everyone to use - which is why (for example) aspirin and latterly ibuprofen are so cheap to buy nowadays - I think Nurofen was around a fiver a pack when still protected - but I bought some in Netto for about 30p the other day - thusly are we all happy - the big corporates make a chunky profit whilst they have control - then we all benefit from low prices when it becomes public domain. Frankly I can't see why someone like Cliff Richard is still making money from 5 minutes work 50 years ago - and will go on for another 25 years - I see that they've crumbled for 75 years just last week.

Sure they made themselves a target by being loud and confrontational - but that doesn't make what they do anymore illegal than the other things that I mentioned. While I have some sympathy for the artists involved, I have little for the record companies etc who are quite happy to resell and resell old product in updated forms, often with little or nothing going to the artists who created it. The copyright laws were once defensible - with a fairly short period where the creator had full legally backed control of their creation before it became "public domain". Large corporates have pushed and pushed govenments to extend and extend the period that they retain control so that less and less moves into the public domain - making the laws less and less defensible imho

As someone who is just about to dip their toe in this somewhat muddy pond - what's considered the best way of locating the VMs - do you run ESXi on the physical server and keep the VMs on the SAN? Or run ESXi & the VMs on the physical server, but locate your data/backups on the SAN? Be interested to hear what people do.

While I couldn't deny the truth of this - wouldn't a similar argument apply to every mp3/mp4 player/ripper/device, most newsgroup server companies, most blank DVD/CD sellers, CD/DVD burners and software, most search engines, etc etc etc - of course companies want to protect their income streams - but the world moves on.

We have it too - but its better than the other one we've got (yep - two separate systems - yippee) - the IVI can't even store avi - only stills - so you have to store a parade of individual images.

Barebones twin tuner PVR box from Maplins - bargain at £30 odd quid.

Ditto for software like AB Tutor - where you can switch it off or impose whitelists on a per classroom (or even per pupil) basis.

Thin clients. As others have said - running software that eats up resources can be a problem - so multimedia editing and heavy screen updating for entire classes can lead to slowing down. Our install runs AppSense over the top - so that individual programs can be restricted on their consumption of resources - so that the whole she-bang doesn't come to a halt.

Got most things running on ours - though obviously multimedia is a problem

As to the OPs query - my understanding - in a nutshell is... To rebuild/refurbish schools, Govt decides to let private companies bid to do the work and then rents back the finished school for a set number of years (usually 25 I believe) - thus giving the private firm a guaranteed income stream for that period to offset the perceived risk of borrowing the initial capital and managing the build process. As a part of the long term let - usually the ICT and site maintenance will be run by partner companies as managed services. The BSF project is usually tendered on a county/area basis - so all the schools will be serviced by the same partners. This leads to some concerns that schools will lose control and direct of their ICT services as the provider will find a "one size fits all" model cheaper to provide, and that large numbers of technical staff will lose their jobs (either directly or indirectly) as they are transferred over to the ICT provider company. While this may bring schools with a poor record of ICT implementation up to a minimum, it will also certainly hold back schools that were at the leading edge, and implement barriers to innovation. IMHO this is really poor solution, and was primarily entered into to, to keep Govt borrowing figures within artificial boundaries. This is now redundant on at least two fronts - EU has directed that PFI type arrangements must appear on the Govt balance sheets (defeating the original intention), and the banks have ceased lending on this sort of project - so the Govt is in the invidious position of having to lend the money to the private firms so they can do the build and rent what they build back to the Govt at a profit (bizarre!). Even worse - after lending them the money and assuming all the risks, the Govt doesn't even own the property at the end of the day. A more complete failure of intent is hard to imagine.
