what type of restore?? a full restore of a vm or of some files? in a complete disaster? install esxi. create a vm, boot off windows cd, select restore from backup, give it the vhd file you restored from the tape.

insight have some strange pricing. LTO3 tapes are cheaper individually than in a pack (10 or 20 i can't remember) but the pack does come with a free memory stick??? I think if you look at the non-education price, the prices make more sense, they just discount some stuff more for us than other stuff, maybe their margin is better??

tbh honest I'm very lucky where I work, I would say 90% are now polite and know exactly how to get a speedy resolution to their problem, or maybe they've learned from my prioritization process. I'm really tempted to setup an exchange account called "Random Person For Effect" and copy that person in on all replies!! unfortunately we are in a job where people are normally stressed when they come to see you, but i don't think this is an excuse and unless you getting 100K+ a year you don't get paid enough to listen this? and toby, I've said it before and I'll say it again, our head of our ICT is great and has defended us over this issue before. funnily enough her requests generally get done before we've even received the email, like some kind of psychic power or something At least I'm not alone!!!

How do you deal with people who send requests especially via email, that could be better worded? I just find the tone of an email people send me really effects how I deal with it and the priority of their item goes way down the list, especially the people that like to hide behind big long complaining emails that they like to copy to every senior person they think actually cares they had to wait 20 seconds to login, and can never be bothered to actually speak to you? especially when they start ranting about having to do something in their own time, that one really makes me laugh as I end staying up 4.00am quite often working on servers because I can reboot an ESX box while their trying to email me to complain my idea of a request sent to IT department should be along the lines of Hi, My printer is working, I've tried printing and it seems stuck could you have a look at it please. no i'm vsphere based here, I don't backup the hosts. I do have the configuration documented though and the documentation is backed up, i then backup the VM's in the same way you would if they were physical machines, agent installed etc. which is blue screening the VM or the Hyper-V host? I would have gone for veam but DPM was cheap and works very nicely for us. i don't won't to get into a hyper-v vs ... debate but I think hyper-v is too immature a product to use in production use, microsoft have a long track record of producing products that are okay after a number versions have been released. I suprised how good DPM is after 3 release. (i suspect they sub-contracted it ) having said that I can see why people go for it. integration with products like DPM and cost factor. the way I see it is like using windows for file and print sharing 10 years ago, nice idea, but wouldn't want to trust it in production use. especially in our case where every server is virtualized ( except the DPM servers because they need hudge disk space, and direct access to tape drives)

well in case you do need to carry on with it, there is an msi available from M$ that stops the profiles being locked. can't remember the name though, XEN did the same with XP, it may be more do with XP's acpi stack, but having said that vmware manage it ok.

KVM sounds great!! just schedule the batch file to clear the profiles folder over night.

depends how complicated your scope is? if you dont have any reservations, and just a scope assigning a range it would be easier to recreate it. btw we don't have any reservations on the "real" dhcp servers as the print server runs dhcp as well purely for the printers as they are on a different vlan

and peoples insistence on printing forms out to be filled in when sharepoint / infopath could keep it all digital

it is blocking the Adverts/ I tried blocking their adverts at home my modifying my hosts file to point their ad server at 127.0.0.1 but it did exactly what you said by going in and endless loop. its probably querying the address and being returned a blocking page and doesn't know what to do with it.
