2 things, 1 it might just go away! seriously i had a problem with kids getting logged on with the local profile instead of the mandatory one and it did just dissappear after a few days. 2. who is the OWNER of the profile on the server

Anything to do with proxy settings? it is a piece of junk though, be prepared for it to randomly stop working.

Hi Everyone, just finished spending all day restoring the SIMS server so I thought I document what i did in case it helps someone else. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We're using Windows 2003, Symantec Backup Exec, SIMS, SQL Server 2005. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Without going into to the cause the old VM would still boot but the database had it, so i decided to disconnect the NIC from it and build a new VM, meaning if the backup wouldn't restore I still had the broken server maybe to ring crapita etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Build new VM, Create disk configuration as before C: drive 50gb, e: drive 150gb. Installed : Windows 2003 Server Service Pack 2 Remote Agent for Backup Exec Formatted e: drive -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Restored E: drive first. Restored C: drive. Re-installed Backup Exec agent, reset IP configuration. Restored System State and Shadow Copy Components Re-installed Backup Exec agent, reset IP configuration. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Went to SIMS SQL data directory renamed master.mdf mastlog.ldf model.mdf modellog.ldf renamed master$4idr to master.mdf mastlog$4idr to mastlog.ldf model$4idr to model.mdf modellog$4idr to modellog.ldf cleared all archive and readonly bits. started SQL server ( make sure you have the right instance if you went through the SIMS migration a few years ago) Run backup job to restore all databases apart from master, Settings -> Leave database ready to use Overwrite existing database Take database offline Let it run --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And we had SIMS back, made a ghost of straight away. hope this helps someone.

we had major problems with machines with the nforce chipset, they take an age to boot windows PE off the network, where as the older machines with intel cards boot to windows pe to ghost in about 20 seconds

we're not RM we're vanilla but this still applies, we don't name them year 10 / year 11 etc we name them 2003 / 2004 / 2005 / 2006 (year intake) otherwise you have to !promote! all the users at then end/start of academic year.

they were proliant servers i was doing this with, HP drivers hardly ever come with windows even the laptop i'm typing this on blue screens if you use a standard XP cd, you have to use 'special' hp one that comes with drivers slipstreamed in. so it'll probably quite straight forward if the hardware is 'standard'.

Why do people still use dual boot? VMWare server is free, so are countless other virtualization tools. VMWorkstation is ideal if you want to pay for it. You can then run all 3 OS at once as well!

I repacked the administrator program with WinstallLE and it works okay, but I have to login as administrator once and run it otherwise it complains that it can't create a directory. Hi, Our switches that the PC's are plugged into are old now. but the backbone is a 3COm 5500G EI. The ghost cast server is plugged direct in to this and IGMP snooping is turned on. No problems multicasting, i warned them the first the time we did this with this setup and they actually thought the network was faster. conrad

The bloke also kept his whole software collection in the simsroot share.!!!! The only reason i guess is because the share is mapped for all staff users was easier to get to. But it does say something about his regard for what should and shouldn't be installed on servers. Oh the sysvol was about 4gb.!!!!!

If you mean MSI delpoyed via group policy. It can't be the server is in a different AD domain. The old domain is dead. I might try booting to windows PE and setting the permissions of the PCENT directory to deny everyone, if thats possible from PE. Might have to. Cheers for the replys. Hi Guys, Great forum you've got here btw. Shame the LEA blocks it! The previous guy doing my job decided to install the policy central client on everything: servers and all. Well anyway the whole system was such a mess I rebuilt all the servers new windows domain etc. and re-imaged the client machines. The only server I didn't rebuild was SIMS. i'm trying to avoid that at all costs. I went to do the SOLUS / December upgrade for SIMS and it couldn't download the update. Which I though was a bit strange, given that i could ping, ftp, and even telnet port 80 and 443 to external address. After pulling out most of my hair I noticed the PCCLIENT.EXE running in task manager. Searching through the registry etc I cant find a service related to this. And I can't kill it via task manager. I booted a windows PE cd and removed the c:\windows\system32\PCENT directory. Restarted the server and volia the solus upgrade ran fine. But within half an hour PCCLIENT.EXE was running again. and the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\PCENT directory was back. So I'm pressuming there must be another service, executable running that spawns the PCCLIENT.EXE. Any ideas? Many thanks in advance for your time Conrad
