Hi ZeroHour, I noticed your post on data protection manager and am quite interested on using it? I'm sure i'll figure out the setup, i'm a bit confused by the licensing as I see your using it maybe your could clarify for me, I'll send you a virtual pint I have two Storage servers currently backing up to and about 13 vm's on ESX boxes. I'm don't really care about backing up esx, the only thing changed on the config is ip addres just the windows VM's. So i need 2 server licenses and what about the "agents" for the vm's? Are the agents for exchange / sharepoint / sql extra? Any gotchas' otherwise?

deleted the VM and re-installed today, much better the mouse actually responds even without vm tools installed!!!!!!!!

I updated to U1 last night, and it hung again today. But having just read ur post. Me thinks I may have forgotten to upgrade the vm tools.

Anyone using 2008 R2 on ESX 4.0, seems the SVGA hangs. Does anyone know if this was fixed in the 208167 build? The os type in settings has changed from 2008 R2 (Experimental) to 2008 R2. I've seen the thing about disabling hardware accelaration, but the VM is sooo jerky if i do that. Any ideas? Conrad

I take you are using roaming profiles. Check the profile is being downloaded correctly. Next time you have to re-type in their outlook settings Insert a registry key, under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\EduGeek then next time its lost the settings check to see if that registry key is there. If it isn't then they're profile is either not saving/ not downloading or get corrupted.

DNS Client on a DC should point to itself, forwarder should be ISP or upstream DNS server, in your case ISP if the two Domains are in the same forest and the replication is setup properly they should replicate between each other. There are replication settings in the DNS mmc snapin, under properties for the DNS domain. I would move your DHCP service to the new domain, as you will be phasing out the old domain, and run the WDS on the DHCP server as this will simplify installation configuration. We have two DC's (in the same domain both running DNS,DHCP,AD,WDS) Or block DHCP relay on the router(s) between the sites and set it up on each site, depending on your link speed. Getting an IP address may be ok, but actually booting windows PE and deploying an image over it may prove to be too slow.

afaik you don't even need a 2008 dc for GPP, all you need is 2008 member server and the GPP/GPMC mmc tools installed.

once place i worked (not my current job honest.... ) i was told when i started it would be okay if the network went went down (meaning the servers crashed) we could just use the wireless. bearing in mind we have 400+ desktops, obviously without wireless support.

on the issue of downtime, check you haven't got a stupidly large sysvol, because you won't experience downtime but if it takes a while for the sysvol to replicate you will get login problems due group policies not being available if the client resolves that DC for the sysvol. we had it where when i started at my current place where all the profiles had been placed in the sysvol, i put a new DC in and it took the whole day to replicate the sysvol. they were using redirected desktops which where in the sysvol as well. the kiddies ended up with the wrong startmenus, desktops. staff had no roaming profiles.

Basically. Your problems with your ISA what version is it, and what else is running on it? I dare not say but my I've never had problems with my ISA server and countless others haven't. Are sure its not hardware? Is it VM or on the Metal?

if you've set your isa and network up properly then should be able to get on the internet at all with if the isa server dissappears. I've blocked all IP's aparts from the ISA server's ip with the LEA's filtering, doesn't atomwide do half the country? then block things based on windows user groups e.g. student / staff etc. whats the problem with ISA server? to be fair if i didn't have the LEA's filtering as well I probably would use something else.

Mike the ownership of mandatory profiles is not irrelevant, I have troubleshooted mandatory profile problems before where the user had permission to the profile and windows refused to load it saying that it could not log you with the roaming profile must use local etc. in each case i set the owner to the local administrator of the server the profile was hosted on and they could then load their profile. in an ideal world ownership should not dictate permissions, unfortunately this is windows and microsoft we are dealing with. and many a bug exist in their products producing strange behaviour such as this
