About Shorty

  1. Hi All, My Centre has just had donated 16 late 2006 Imacs running OSX 10.6 also a Power PC X server running 10.4 (Tiger). All of the imacs have be configured with Boot Camp running Windows 7. These macs are going to replace our old HP Win7 machines. We have a year old Xeon server with win 2008. We also have a droboshare NAS with 1Tb space and a LaCie Network space MAS with 1TB hd space. The drobo is currently used for backups The macs will get used in both mac and windows modes on a regular basis. By different children every week. Currently the students log in with just one mandatory profile "Student" their home directory is mapped to a fileshare on the win2k8 server called "public" I can see the macs being booted a lot into OSX for image work. While windows will be used for datalogging and some mapping software we use.Or it will be a case of the kids and staff using which ever mode they feel most comfortable with. At the end of the week when a school leaves us I would like to simply go to public find all of their work in the same folder regardless of wether they have used a mac then burn a dvd for them and wipe public clean ready for the next group. I am trying to work out the best way to sort the filesharing. Macs are a new challenge for me and I havent got at all to grips with permissions or sorting out security. From what I have heard MAC security on a network can be a pain so I was trying to avoid allowing them access from OSX to the windows network. What would you do in this situation ? I am thinking this. Use one of the NAS boxes for the Public folder assuming this can be read a written to by both PC and MAC. Using the Xserver for OSX logins and the win2k8 server for windows logins. and thats it !! Any help will be gratefully received :-) Cheers John
  2. Morning All, It seems our new server has a knackered C drive and its corrupting a whole host of files :-( We are getting a replacment on Monday but I am in the process of moving some of the roles to a backup 2k8 server. One of the things I am trying to do is to move all of the old WSUS packages to the new server. We have about 3gb of files and being on a dodgy 1mb connetion I am reluctant to have to download them all again. Does anyone know if there is a way to manually copy the packaged over to the new server and get it to recognise the files ? To add to the dilema the old WSUS is corrupt and I cannot get into the WSUS console to do the manual copy as suggested here MCSE 2K3: Transfer WSUS updates to another server Any help will be gratefully recieved ;-) Cheers John
  3. Hi All, We are three days into a new Win2k8 install and somhow this morning we had a BSOD that ended up corrupting the Component services, We cannot now use the Group Policy Manager. We have tried unistalling but it wont have it. Anyone got any suggestions as to a way of installing it again? We do have another Win2k8 machine is there any crude way of borrowing/copying files from the other server ? Cheers Shorty
  4. We are out in the sticks here with ADSL running at 512k. I use a service from upstream internet. This allows me to bond together 2 (or more) ADSL lines giving us a 1meg down 1.4meg up speed. But this can work with any ADSL and also they now have a service that can bond other isps as well as mobile solutions. So you could simply bond 2 of your 4meg lines giving you an 8 meg connection. Basically they provide a PCI adsl card for each line, I popped these into an old P4 machine as the router and then run their linux cd on the PC. Its been up and running 24/7 stop for the past two years. If you can afford it you can bond as many lines as you like. Cheers John
  5. Plexer your a star \o/ Thanks
  6. Hi All, We have a PSU failing on one of our old MISCO servers, Its an Ablecom Model No: SP450-RP Switching Powersupply 450watt. From out of a supermicro tower. Its proving to be a bit of a pain to find a replacment as the PSU has an 8 pin power connector to the motherboard as well as the standard 24pin cable. Can anyone suggest an alternative ? Cheers John
  7. Cheers Guys :-)
  8. Hi All, I am looking to buy a new A4 potentially A3 printer for one of our suites. It needs to be borderless and networkable. Any suggestions ? Cheers John
  9. Just found this How-To for the transparent proxy Linux: Setup a transparent proxy with Squid in three easy steps I think its the full ver of Cools paste. Still unsure though if I am editing IPtables or IPtables-config. I had forgot the DG box only has one network cards so going to have to pop another in
  10. Thanks for the help Cools Can I just clarify is the following added too the iptables or iptable-config file ?
  11. Matt at the moment I am thinking that the only way to do this is as you say to get the students or guests to input the proxy settings. Which isnt ideal hence me having ago at the transparent proxy. Hopefully I am wrong and Stuart or one of the other Ruckus experts will just point out the error of my ways ;-). I was expecting the Ruckus ACL to have some sort of Network Address Translation to it but it seems to just be filtering.
  12. mm re-looking at this I can see that what I am doing must be incorrect as I am filtering anything that goes to 8080 and denying all others, but obvioulsy this isnt the aim
  13. Yeah I am running V8. I have configured the gateway to 192.168.0.252 and in the ACL settings I have setup the following as a start. http://www.ghyllheadoec.co.uk/images/stories/dans.jpg I have then edited the advanced options of the WLAN to set the L4 ACL as Dans. Any suggestions ? Cheers john
  14. Hi Stuart, not having a good day struggling with the Zone Director ACL as well, was going for Cools option first as it allowed me to integrate the old APs. But when I had a look at Zone Director I couldnt see the obvious route to forward everything to http://192.168.0.251:8080. Going to have another look now ;-)
  15. Hi Cools, I am struggling to implement your suggestion I am falling at the first Hurdle the Linux version that DG is running on is CentOS Linux 4.4. I have found the file iptables in /etc/rc.d/init.d and the iptables-config file in /etc/sysconfig is it this that I need to edit ? Cheers John
